Dorkstorm: The Annihilation , a hysterical article deconstructing the "Ten Geekiest Hobbies" by Seanbaby.
  • Comic books aren't geeky! Comic books are cool. I only became cool enough to read comic books recently.
  • As someone who has indulged in at least 4 of those 10 hobbies at one point or another, I'd agree with you about comics. However, it doesn't seem as though Seanbaby is attacking comics per se. I think the lion's share of his mockery is reserved for continuity geeks and comic-movie nitpickers. Not really comics-related, but I went to see The Two Towers with my in-laws in 2002. The movie was kind of ruined for me by one brother-in-law (who is normally OK) who repeatedly bitched about how some minor character was represented by Peter Jackson. This past Thanksgiving, he made a point of bringing up his Theromir-related angst yet again. So I can understand Seanbaby's ire.
  • *hesitates before speaking* *looks back and forth to see if anyone's looking* It's Faramir actually, and to tell the truth I was kinda upset about the whole thing too, but you get over it. Plus, you sure as hell don't talk about it with people who don't care. Of course I'm 33 and play D&D a couple times a month, so you might want to take this with a grain of salt, but I do have a live-in girlfriend, a good sex life thankyouverymuch, a good hold on reality, and don't own a single heavy metal t-shirt although the dragon one thounds really thpecial and cool! *walks out of the room with hands in pocket, whistling a tuneless song*
  • Yes, that was rude. I thought the Faramir thing was a bad choice by Jackson too, because he really didn't need more action and it ruined the whole contrast between Faramir and Boromir, which is the basis of Faramir's character - though the younger and ignored brother, he is actually the better man. Not really upset, but it was a bad story choice.
  • And yet the list doesn't include computer games. Or using the internet. Or reading.
  • jb, I eventually came around to seeing it Jackson's way after hearing him comment on it (on the EE DVD) -- how do you keep the "danger quotient" up with a friend Faramir, plus you need to be reminded how powerful the ring is. And I thought the Faramir scenes in the EE went a long way toward solving the character problems as well.
  • AHHH! It's Thanksgiving ALL OVER AGAIN! [/mock horror] It's Faramir actually Fair enough. It's been many years since I've read the books. And mind you, as someone who played for a couple of years in a Vampire: The Masquerade LARP, I live in the glassiest of glass houses when it comes to making fun of other geeky activities. I do reserve the right to make fun of furries, though.
  • I think geeky hobbies can build character, provided they are controlled and stopped at one point. Thoughout high school all my girlfriends wore stage make-up and black leather, blah! But eventually I grew out of that scene, it just wasn't good for my pysche and was often depressed. Now I've found a group of people who both affirm my life and help it reach new levels. Plus, you'd be amazed how many of the chicks in zebra costumes dig my vampire bunny outfit.
  • And where's Manga on that list?
  • I probably didn't comment on this back in the day because I am guilty of two and may be implicated as a co-conspirator of three or the other 10 Deadly Hobbies.
  • Host: What are your hobbies? Contestant: Strangling animals, golf, and masturbating. *Crowd boos* Host: I see golf's not too popular around here.
