Most popular names of 2004 (pdf) in England and Wales. 'Mohammed' is now in the top 20. Informal or abbreviated versions - 'Jack', 'Charlie' - are ever more popular. And while a great name like, say 'Peter' doesn't feature, the top 50 includes names like 'Toby' - surely best suited to dogs (or jugs). As for the girls...
  • I see 'Trinity' has fallen from it's position of a few years ago. I could not have predicted that.
  • Least popular: Wolfmancheesebread, which has been used zero times yet again.
  • Toby! That's a start. My faith in humanity will be restored when this list includes Toby, Tristram and Yorick. I had a student named Ffion last year, but he was a he. I'm pretty sure.
  • #46 Archie Now that's just cruel.
  • Once again, "Fester" gets the shortest of shrifts.
  • *keeps list for future reference*
  • CALL IT QUIDNUNC GODDAMMIT!
  • sorry mom :(
  • Damn, two of the girl names I've always really liked (Chloe and Sophie) are in the top 10 in britain and chloe's in the top 25 in the US for 2003. Back to the drawing board of the future!
  • Yeah, my son's name is Ethan and it turned out that his name is this year's equivalent of John or Michael.
  • I've always liked regular, old-fashioned names like Emily and Jacob. Looks like I'm not alone. At least they haven't glommed on to Noah or Amelia yet.
  • That "Ashton" is reported as being on the rise fills me with an unspeakable dread.
  • "Quidnunc Goddammit" is an odd name. "Quidnunc Charles," on the other hand, will get the lad more ass than a toilet seat.
  • I know two little girls called Amelia, so it's on the way up. (A friend just called her daughter Charlise.)
  • These names are all time-worn and WET! Eudemonia and Glossolalia for girls, Lichen and Hyphen for infant boys -- monnickers no one is apt to forget.
  • It's good to know that I'm still the only one in Ecordia named Grignr.
  • Hooray, they left "Claire" alone.
  • Ethan is a really nice name tho.
  • I'm glad Emma is still off this list. I was afraid of a spike after Rachel on Friends named her baby that, but so far so good. Now if that will just hold off for another 8 years....
  • Three out of the four people that I know who have had baby girls in the past year have chosen to name them 'Agnes'. This disturbs me.
  • I note that "Seven" has still not made the list.
  • #46 Archie Now that's just cruel. No it's not. Every little Archie is destined to grow up and fall madly in love with a handsome lad named Horatio. It's romantic.
  • Now if that will just hold off for another 8 years.... You have an extremely long gestation period, Sooooz.
  • Yeah, I'm actually an elephant.
  • Archie is not as cruel as Alfie. I mean, come on, Alfie? This ain't 1960's London.
  • Or "Camp Freddie". That, also, would be bad.
