Curious George:
What's the consensus on posting the same link at both Monkeyfilter and Metafilter?
Old-timers may remember that before membership opened up at Mefi, I used to "double-post" a few of my links, without (m)any complaints. Now that Mefi has opened up, do people wish that I not "double-post"? My rationale is simply that Mofi members can't discuss it there and vice-versa.
-
I think it's ok as long as one doesn't use the exact same wording. That way it looks like a bit of effort has gone into it. But I don't run the place, & I'm not a consensus, & anyway damn the torpedoes.
-
deja mofi posted by zeoslap at 9:39 PM PST on December 28 huh? posted by joelf at 10:09 PM PST on December 28

nothing wrong with a double....as long as it's something to discuss and not a single link to a site known to every torvald, damien, and hudspeth.
-
I usually read both, but I think it should be ok: there have been times when I wanted to do it but was just too lazy. Posters should try and make an effort to try and foster discussion, though... maybe summarize the mefi discussion in the mofi post if you are trying to start something here. Even when I do get annoyed at a post, I think the important thing is to try and avoid the pissy-ness and poo slinging. I think a better theme for the site than 'best of the web' is 'great site to visit'. Just encourage people to put some time or thought into their posts.
-
The only forum-type site I normally look at is this one, so nearly all things from other forums will be new to me. Could care less where an FPP appeared before as long as it hasn't appeared here before.
-
I'm with bees.
-
I got no problem wif it, if the link be good. It's always interesting to see the divergent discussions that evolve. The best ones usually happen here, of course.
-
As long as we get the good stuff first, it's all good with me. It's just so much more satisfying to see our tag on their stuff than their tag on ours.
-
I'm with bees too. Trust me, there'll always be someone who'll complain. In fact, lately there's at least one person complaining in every thread, it seems (I'm probably just cynical). Gyan, I think your links are great, especially since I only read Metatalk and AskMefi at the moment.
-
It's only when they start to complain that you know you're really gettin' somewhere.
-
That's them, this is us - post away, I say!
-
There's nothing wrong with it. At all.
-
only if it's ok for me to drop the exact same comment in both threads. ;)
-
It's about time that MonkeyFilter separated itself psychologically from MetaFilter and started acting like its own community instead of a "holding pen" for MeFi wannabes. Post away!
-
How many times must we have this conversation? This is really not such a big deal.
-
What is this MetaFilter you all keep talking about?
-
Koko agrees with bees.
-
It's about time that MonkeyFilter separated itself psychologically from MetaFilter and started acting like its own community instead of a "holding pen" for MeFi wannabes. Yup. This would only be an issue if MoFi were a part of MeFi, which it is not. Nobody yells "deja boingboing" or "deja fark" (which sounds dirty). Different site, not a double post.
-
Tracy, can I rewrite the FAQ? Pleeeeeaaasssse! Heh heh he hee hee.
-
My opinion is that we have a direct feed from mefi to update the main page with all of their posts automatically. Muahahaha. Oh, and if anyone's gonna rewrite the FAQ, let it be tqk. Seriously, I barely ever chack mefi anymore, so bring'em on. Mofi is not its brother's keeper.
-
You guys should ask Tracy for the twenty dollar a month fee she pays me for MoFi to have exclusive rights to my posts.
-
Hmmm, appears I also barely ever chack my spelling anymore.
-
100% agreement with quidnunch, bashi, beeswacky, and the lot. Monkeyfilter isn't a subsidiary of that blue/green/gray place. Post here, post there, post on your Livejournal, your MySpace page, in your Orkut profile, Blogger, Moveable Type, Geocities, and add an email to your favorite Gmail thread. If it isn't inane (and your posts have never been inane, Gyan), and it isn't a double, why should Monkeyfilter be subordinate to any other site and miss out on a good post?
-
*quidnunc (what I get for not hitting preview...)
-
quidmunch... hehheh (I know that's not what you wrote, chimaera, but that's what I read initially)
-
I totally read quidnunch as squidranch. weird.
-
If you would like to post to both, go ahead. But as a MetaFilter reader/non-member, personally I would prefer that you posted the really good items here first. Maybe a day earlier. This would support Monkeyfilter having the best links, and also allow you to show the larger audience of MF as well. MonkeyFilter is far better than MF; the monkeys are far more entertaining. Feed us the best bananas first!
-
squidnunc kid? quidranch? i need coffee.
-
Planetfour - it happens to me all the time. I'm glad I'm not the only one with the quidnunc/squidranch problem.
-
I apologise for my deja comment. I read both, always one after another and this link was the top one at both sites. I added the comment at MeFi first, because I saw it here first, but then tried to be all clever by doing the sameish comment here. Had the posts not both been at the top on both sites I probably wouldn't have even noticed. I also hate comments that don't relate to the post and instead whine about em, and I officially withdraw both comments. As you were.
-
Since I was cited for my earlier comment, I'll comment and then I'll shut up. While think Gyan's double posts were actually nice links, my exception was and remains with the verbatim quality of the double postings and is 2 part: First, if MoFi isn't a subsidiary of MeFi -- and it isn't, and shouldn't be -- then double posting, particularly in the exact same link text and/or description, blurs the distinctions rather than furthers the differences between the sites. If you can say the same things with the same words on 2 sites, why bother reading them? Seems like an analogy with newspapers makes sense (sorry, US-centric): there's room in 1 country for the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times and other near-national papers with lots of original content, but if you read them all, who would read the parts of a more regional paper when it will just be wire service versions of what you've already read? Why not skip to the editorials and local news that make that regional paper distinct? Second, double-posting is one of those things that seems to break the Categorical Imperitive or Golden Rule; if everyone on MoFi who can also post to MeFi, Slashdot, & etc. made identical postings across multiple group weblogs, then MoFi and the other sites would all become less distinctive in character, not more. Those are personal opinions and nothing more, but I do stand by them but won't comment on this thread further because I see that I'm in the minority on this.
-
Ditto beeswacky: I don't read much at metafilter, and if I happen to see a topic discussed here I'm bored with or have no interest in, I can always just not read the thread.
-
First, if MoFi isn't a subsidiary of MeFi -- and it isn't, and shouldn't be -- then double posting, particularly in the exact same link text and/or description, blurs the distinctions rather than furthers the differences between the sites. And I responded to this notion earlier as well. The distinction comes more from different eyeballs, not different types of audience. A more apt analogy is the LA Times caters to "LAers" and the NYT to "NYers". Some fraction may choose to read both. This fraction can ignore the wire services. made identical postings across multiple group weblogs, then MoFi and the other sites would all become less distinctive in character, not more. The character is derived from the nature & quality of discussion more than the wording of the posts.
-
Monkeyfilter: Feed us the best bananas first! Not just an opinion, but a tagline.
-
I would think that you monkeys who hang out at the blue would want verbatim posts, so you could easily identify ones you've already read.
-
LAME. I think it's time to cut the cord...MoFi R0x0r5 to the m4x0r3d.
-
What is this Metafilter everyone keeps talking about? Anyone have a link?
-
I think I once asked Gyan to differentiate when cross posting (in MeTa, maybe)but was misunderstood, reflected, and decided I did not actually care. Personally, I don't think I'd cross post even with rewritten copy. But I am insanely busy, and thus link not. So: link as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.
-
Quidders, please write me a FAQ. I promise to link to it. If it's not too sweary.
-
Oh, and notice to the Curious Georges of late: Please put something else in the title to distinguish your post from the others, thankys.
-
Lemme dream up something and I'll mail you, trace. Heh heh heh! A small humble draft for multiple monkey comment or rejection, of course. I may have to ask some expert advice from my doppelganger squidnunc, however.
-
How about a wiki, with quick summaries of personas for those with poor memories. (Was it BlueHorse or petebest who was lacking pants? Is quidnunc actually insane, or just very very funny?)
-
For that reason, I think a wiki would be cool. Hmm, I used to have an old wiki wossit lying around on the server...
