The Online Gallery of Van Gogh's work.
I was inpsired by this post on mefi to post an online gallery of another great artist. I'm sure all of you are familiar with his paintings, but for me Van Gogh's most exciting work is his drawings (the gallery has an unbelievable catalog of over 1000 of his drawings).
As someone who has worked in pen a lot, I'm totally blown away by what he can do with the medium. I don't remember where I read it, but Van Gogh talked about trying to reproduce the effects of color in his drawings by using texture instead. You could probably find exactly where he said it in the entire, unabridged collection of Van Gogh's letters. Some good examples of what he does with texture and space can be seen in this one or this one. Sometimes he just lets the texture carry him into a beautiful abstraction. For more information, I'd recommended checking out Bernard Chaet's phenomenal book The Art of Drawing.

Many years ago, saw a fantastic display of his paintings in Ottawa, but there were almost no few drawings -- great links. Thanks, TheRoach.

Dang: should read "almost no/few"

Thanks for the links. It was interesting to see this drawing as I recently saw “Starry Night over the Rhone” at an exhibition of “The Impressionists: Masterpieces from the Musee d’Orsay". People queued for up to two hours to see the exhibition and it was well worth the wait.

Van Gogh and Gaugin are in the pub. Gaugin says - Hey Vinny, fancy another pint? Van the man replies, no thanks, I've got one 'ere. Got one 'ere, - ear, geddit? Oh, never mind, sorry... *slips quietly away*

tht's 'Gauguin', obviously...

Great post, thanks! I'm a huge Van Gogh fan, spent two days at the amazing museum in Amsterdam but I've never seen so many of his drawings. While part of what I love most about his work is the way he made his textures out of paint, there's an amazing quality to his ink work as well. Awesome.

This stunning painting imagines the real sky that inspired The Starry Night

It's beautiful, but Van Gogh does it better. Someone referenced his painting on this MeFi thread about star trails over Australia. IMHO they are closer to what VG's vision.
