Why I'm going to be posting here again
  • That's what you think.
  • Aw crap
  • TEETH WITH NO CAPS!
  • Until someone changes your password.
  • 12/1 NEVAR FORGET!111!!!
  • Is this the correct forum to talk about my interstitial cystitis?
  • I don't WANT to be exposed to kamus.
  • Welp, someone changed it.
  • I fail to see what this has to do with the Mike Gaston movie, "The Login of the Q" in which several small squirrels are . . . ohh PHftthththtththt!
  • Good morning.
  • Now where is that CSS trick when you need it? VOID VOID VOID
  • What in sam hill is this all about??!! Wha happa? Pls to advise.
  • What in sam hill is this all about??!! Wha happa? Pls to advise. This users account password was published in the blue. I changed the password and sent it to the owner of the acccount. All is well.
  • Man, I feel like Nicolas Cage at a Navajo Speakers' Convention.
  • So are you the man as it were? Here's thanking you in advance. (Seriously, what IS this deal with MetaFilter!!??) It's mildly interesting but constipated.
  • Tho, the Young Ones are cute.
  • O, U R so 8sted.
  • Sorry, no linX, but could I just give a shoutout to my posse?
  • fLESHBOY: tHIS IS IN FACT THE IDEAL FORUM. pLS TO CONTROL CAPS LOCK.
  • This is the real kamus here, Somebody named kelly spotted this and changed my account password. Question: what the hell is bugmenot and how do I undo the damage that posting has cost me?
  • What. The. Fuck?
  • I'm no expert, but I wouldn't go near airline security if I were you.
  • kamus, you'd probably be best contacting Matt and asking him for a new account. That sucks. But your MoFi account's okay, obviously, and that's all that matters.
  • It certainly is!!!
  • I noticed metafilter was on bugmenot awhile ago (before signups were opened) but I tried every login available at the time and none worked. At this point it seems asinine to shit on the Blue when it only costs $5 to get your own account.
  • This totally sucks- got my ebay account too. bastards!
  • Sorry to hear that your password got sniffed. May I suggest the MD5 password generator bookmarklet to protect your future web-accounts?
  • OOkay. I'm not a sneaky tech genius like you all, but if you really need the $5.00, I'm here to help. Meet me at the dumpster in the alley. You know the one.
  • I saw the carry-on at mefi when kamus's account was hacked when it showed up here I grabbed the password and changed it and let Dave know. Because I had not yet heard from him I tried the name pass combo at some other sites. Any place I got into I changed the pass and sent it to Kamus. Hopefully no one was able to do him serious harm.
  • Thanks Kelly! I still don't understand how someone could get my acct info and password. How does bugmenot work and how can that be legal. Sheesh, that's the first time I've ever had this happen and it's disturbing.
  • OK, it's all clear to me now. The reference to "carry-on" above indicates that this is a terrapin thread! Yes that's right, we're all at risque!
  • Good work, arse_hat! But any idea how it happened in the first place? I mean, the original 'kamus/teeth' combo on bugmenot was for MeFi, right? Does this mean MeFi was compromised, or the gap was somewhere else? (Sorry for the flurry of stupid questions.)
  • Ok, I'm out. nobody wants to play. Good luck and whatever.
  • I would look at the simple possibilities first. Someone close to you know your pass? Do you write it down? Did you send it in a email? Could someone check you e-mail when you are away from the comp? Did you use this pass login combo at some less reputable sites? Next make sure your virus defs are up to date and then run ad-aware, spybot and spybot's tea timer.
  • I applaud arse_hat's assistance to kamus, and for her callout of joelf's ass-haberdashery in MeTa.
  • This is the real kamus here TRUST NO ONE! *runs*
  • the_bone. "I applaud arse_hat's assistance to kamus, and for her callout of joelf's ass-haberdashery in MeTa." Thank-you for that but I (checks pants just to be sure) am a guy.
  • Oops. My bad. Sorry about that.
  • Kudos to Arse_hat Joelf did apologise (not to me) but it was a pretty thoughtless thing to do. I can't post on MeFi and Matt sent me an accusatory email. I denied all wrongdoing (except for the obviously stupid practice of using the same u/p on multiple sites) but he has yet to reinstate my acct. Considering the way that some Mefites are tearing me a new one over on 19 years ago by kamus
  • If you want it back, I guess the best solution, then, is to wait for it all to blow over. It sucks, though, and I'm sorry you had such bad luck. Did you work out how bugmenot got your info to begin with?
  • Whoops- I am out of it! Screwed up the tag for metatalk and pushed post instead of preview. When your privacy has been invaded it's hard to think straight.
  • Tracicle- can't figure out how my info got out. I'm behind a firewall, no one has access to my 'puter. I scanned for viruses, keyloggers, spyware etc- nada. I can only assume that someone hacked one of the sites where I use that login combo. But that's a pretty uneducated guess. still fixing stuff dept:My once proud handle -for crying out loud
  • I just haven't gone back since I blew-up at them. I used some nasty language I am sorry for but I still feel the same way. This was way beyond a prank against the group. This could have really hurt someone in real life. It set me off because after the recent call for violence against wendell (yeah I know it may not have be a MeFi member) we now have another jump from the online to the real and no one wants to talk about it. Sorry to be pooping here. I'll stop now.
  • Tracicle- thanks for the vote of confidence on the above mentioned metatalk thread. My heart will always be with you monkeys.
  • this sucks kamus. hope matt gets the drift and re-enables your account. probably have to realize that a lot of folks thought it was a joke login... but still, uncalled for. although it's probably nice to be told that your info is floating out there, this isn't the way i'd like to hear about it if it was me in the bugmenot list...
  • That's really stupid. Really, really stupid. Why the fuck is matt punishing the victim? joelf confesses to using kamus' account, and gets a pat on the head; kamus gets the third degree???
  • accusing me of deliberately posting my u/p just to screw over MeFi You may not have been referring directly to me but I did think someone was fucking with MeFi so I'm gonna respond. First, I wasn't accusing you. I have no idea who "you" are. All I saw was that someone signed up with Mefi within the last 2 weeks and that their info was on Bugmenot. The simplest conclusion to come to is that it was done on purpose. At least that's my opinion. (Compare it to the more elaborate: a) someone signed up, had their account hacked and then the hacker (rather than use the info to post him/herself) goes to Bugmenot and submits the info in the hopes that someone else is gonna find it and fuck up Mefi or b) someone signed up at MeFi and was stupid enough to share their info with someone who posted it to Bugmenot.) Anyway, I'm sorry that your account has been hacked (or compromised, which seems more likely to me), but please don't take the accusations of wrong doing on MeTa personally. I'm sure most people who made them don't have a clue who you are.
  • Sorry about the trouble, kamus, that's a bunch of horseshit. Matt usually seems like a pretty sensible guy, so hopefully he'll come around soon. But I'm having difficulty as well understanding why he banned the victim but not the perpetrator. Eh, you're always welcome around here.
  • Yah, I'll say this over there, but this whole thing has been confusing from an observer's perspective. At first, it really looked like someone had gotten an account, made some comments, and then posted the bugmenot to the front page as something a bit too clever. I wasn't sure if there was malice behind it; but it should have been obvious to anyone what would happen. So, at first I figured that kamus was kamus, if you get my drift. Then I came over here, because of the comment in the meta thread, to see that someone had posted as kamus here. And, then looking at the mofi history, it looked like kamus was a long(er) term monkey and so it seemed less likely to me that he did this himself. At that point, I figured that somhow his info had gotten on bugmenot and someone maliciously (and, again, too cleverly) then posted to mefi as kamus. Turns out, according to what kamus and joelf have said, that kamus didn't do it and joelf did it but didn't intend it to be malicious at all. Joelf just found the login on bugmenot. So, no one involved supposedly had any malicious intent. It's still a mystery as to how kamus's info got on bugmenot. Finally, given that kamus on mefi is new, and that his info appeared on bugmenot, from Matt's perspective it's probably hard not to be suspicious. I'm only convinced of kamus's complete innocence because of his history here...something that Matt is probably unaware of. But we do know with certainty, because of jeolf's confession, that it wasn't kamus himself that posted the post. So it's hard to say that kamus has done anything at all wrong, except having his account compromised and appearing on bugmenot. Which, from all appearances, he's a complete victim of. So it doesn't make much sense to ban him from mefi. Joelf was very careless, but seems sincere about it being unintentional.
  • Thanks Dobbs- I have no beef with the folks who could have suspected me of being an ass- it's just tough when there is no way to directly respond. I can see why I would be suspect under the circumstances. I'm just not guilty. BTW, what's the difference between hacked and "compromised"?- not being snarky- I don't know anything really about computer security Also, I should correct my statement above where I said Matt sent me an accusatory email. I should have said it was accusatory in tone- he didn't directly accuse me of anything definite. I don't want to fan flames here. I have to admit that's emotionally unsettling to have this happen but I shouldn't exaggerate . All my really important accts have different login combos but I did use that u/p combo on a lot of other sites (stupid, stupid, stupid). I just worry that someone somehow has access to my other info. The worst part is not knowing where the info came from. OK, I've officially reached broken record status here. Sorry excessive venting.
  • OK I guess I'm not done- I've been over to the Mefi thread on this and am responding here to some comments. Taz and EB have it right in terms of clarifying what happened. Just for the record, Matt hasn't officially banned me- he just hasn't responded to my emails yet- but it makes sense that he would need time to figure it all out. I don't hold a grudge against anyone except whichever pinhead stole and published my user info. Although joelf didn't apologise directly to me, it's obvious he realized he made a mistake and that's OK. It's possible that my info was obtained from an unsecured wifi connection as someone has theorized. I travel a lot with my laptop and I use my wifi card in hotels and airports.
  • Oh, I used the word "compromise" so as to be neutral about whether or not you were responsible. In other words, from a system admin perspective, when bad stuff happens on someone's account you can't just blindly accept the "oh, someone hacked me and I didn't do it" explanation, right? But, also, the word "compromise" sorta kinda allows for some responsibility to accrue to the user whose account was "compromised"...in the sense of, well, maybe this user is really careless and I (the sysadmin) can't really trust him/her to keep their account secure. I'm not sure if arse_hat said he did this or not, but kamus you need to check to see if any other accounts of yours are on bugmenot. But, really, you need to systematically go through and change your password on every single account anywhere that you've accessed online. If any of those places have your credit card number visible to "you" when you're logged in (I can't remember if Amazon does) then you need your credit card canceled and a new one sent. Where there's smoke there's fire. If someone got this info, there's a very good chance they got other info. Maybe enough for identity theft, even, so you should check your credit reports, too.
  • Amazon, Paypal, and most other commercial sites will display the credit card number as xxx-xxx-xxx-[last few digits]. Even so, it's still really risky. Best to call your credit company and check if any transactions have taken place aside from those you've done yourself.
  • kmellis is right on my definition of compromised as well. I used the term to mean that no one hacked mefi or mofi but simply obtained your login due to your own lack of protecting it, whether that be writing it down, telling it to someone, sending it in an email, or leaving it on your computer and allowing someone else access to the computer, or something else altogether.
  • (responding to joelf via MeFi) Thanks joelf, we're cool . In a way, it may have positive repercussions as if you hadn't posted that. I'm not sure how long it would be before I knew my user info was on the loose. Also I'm going to assume that there's some weakness in my computer security (although I've no real idea where that would be) and if no further damage was caused then I'm all the better from getting more cognizant about security issues. Thanks to all who spent time caring about this issue and to those who offered advice. If this was all because I inadvertantly caused this by having crappy security (which I hope isn't the case), then I'll owe you all an apology.
  • Well handled, everyone. And arse_hat, I hope you won't stay away from MeFi -- everyone got a tad overheated for a while, but I think it's blown over, and in the big picture... well, you know.
  • Kamus, so which, for the record, (okay, fine, I'm just curious) of the MeFi posts made as "kamus" were actually by you? Someone just posted on meta that they were posting as "kamus" before joelf ever did, also from finding it on bugmenot.
  • none of the posts from the past few days were from me. Thus far I had only posted two comments on MeFi before the shitstorm hit.
  • Oh I see now why you're asking- Cosmonik had been posting as me. He thought my accnt. was unused as I hadn't posted any comments at the time he had checked-being a mefi newbie and all. I hadn't been over there in a couple of days so I didn't notice someone was posting as me. The only two comments I had made were on this thread -all the others were by someone else. BTW, what happened on 8/1 that seemed to traumatize the mefites?
  • BTW Cosmonik. Thank you too for your apologies. I think this was all a collossal misunderstanding and I think we all learned something. At this point I hardly think it serves anyone to have "disciplinary action" taken against you or joelf (or me, for that matter). It was big of both cosmonik and joelf to come forward and they clearly showed a sense of responsibilty in this matter. The mistake they made was completely understandable even if it did turn out to be a big PIA for me. I do think Matt should restore my acct though.
  • I believe 8/1 was the day of the login/login debacle.
  • 8/1 was the login debacle. 8/2 was when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Unrelated?
  • 8/1 was my birthday. Still is, actually.
  • Yeah, that's what I'm trying to find out -what was the login/login debacle? 8/1 was knickerbocker's birthday. 8/2 was when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Unrelated?
  • login/login was a user/password that worked on mefi. It was kind of an open secret. A lot of people suddenly got hold of this, and started commenting like crazy. Then, someone posted something..
  • Quonsar made a mirror. Warning: strong language and possibly mild nudity. Very likely NSFW.
  • From MeTa: the story can be found here on monkeyfilter. yah, that mofi thread probably doesn't help anyone's perception of what's going on, what with it being a bit inane. posted by t r a c y at 12:47 PM PST on December 2 Can someone please tell t r a c y to bite a dick?
  • I think you just did.
  • Can we stop with the fostering of cross-message board rivalries? Please?
  • We're veering awful close to a full on feud here, actually. It may be too late to stop it. starts polishing gran'pappy's blunderbuss.
  • *hides the jug of corn drippins in the root cellar*
  • Lordy- there's goin' to be a shootin' match! I hope not
  • Can we stop with the fostering of cross-message board rivalries? Please? Especially since t r a c y was a monkey, but doesn't come by much more, since she was made to feel unwelcome, and she is missed here. That said, it doesn't really justify denigrating the mofi thread. Maybe we should all just stop making judgemental comments about other communities.
  • The only comments I recall from t r a c y were negative criticisms of Monkeyfilter's MeFi-related threads. Now she's at it again from over there. And to clarify: she felt unwelcome...she wasn't "made to feel unwelcome". There's a big difference. But I agree that we should stop the cross-site commenting. If you have something to say to a particular mefite, pay five bucks and say it. Or better yet, don't.
  • What rocket88 said.
  • we should all just stop making judgemental comments about other communities I refuse to back down from my position that Republicans, and those who vote for them, are bigots.
  • This was a sad and unfortunate incident. Kamus, I hope this all works out okay for you. From what I can see, this MeFi/Mofi feud is just petty. I thought being a member at both sites would be cool. Now, I feel as if it was a waste of my time to have even joined MeFi. I read the threads and the comments and for the most part I feel as if the *We are better, smarter and cooler than you* attitude is what prevails. I am a Monkey, I don't need to be a Mefite. I certainly don't feel, after watching the shenanigans at Mefi, as if I am welcome to be myself at Mefi, so I don't post or comment. I will continue to read the Blue, but only as an observer. Monkeyfilter is home, Metafilter is a place to visit.
  • wow, I just checked this. I thought it was a brief misunderstanding worthy of jest. Didn't realize it would be so heated. Sorry, kamus. Hope all turns out well, however you want it. Can I get an *ook, ook*, scratch the genitals kinda affirmation? Me, I'll just be eating the fruit from the low-hanging branches.
  • And frankly, I'm glad I don't understand all the subterfuges going on here.
  • Matt has reinstated my acct. However, when I login, all the posts disappear from the FP except for the sidebar which is now in some Asian language. Whoops just tried again- now when I go to the login screen, I get the word- Login no form space WTF
  • Yer havin' a rough couple of days there, kamus. Ye could do with a nice massage.
  • I afraid I know all too well what yer driving at, islander.
  • The fenlands are beautiful at this time of year.
  • it's obvious that these recent troubles o' mine are karmically tied, retribution wise, to prior utterances of that phrase that must now never be mentioned so I won't mention it no matter how badly I want to
  • perhaps matt is leery in the wake of the whole angry_modem thing, which was pretty similar.
  • Well, Matt didn't do or even say anything about that whole thing. Of course, it wasn't on his site. I'm sure you'll be posting again soon, kamus.
  • Everything's straightened out. The only thing I have to worry about is someone draining my bank acct. The last person to use my MeFi acct .switched the customization font to 100pt wingdings. That's why I couldn't see anything. It wasn't easy, but I figured out how to change it back. I'm back-now all I need to do is think of something witty/erudite/politically inflammatory to say.
  • Oooh! Oooh! I know! Say something about something vibrating! That's always good!
  • I just want to re-iterate that I am a cock. And a cock feels no pain.
  • Has fuyugare been hacked? I know he's often kinda in-your-face and sometimes enigmatic, but that comment makes no sense.
  • I don't know, path. According to his user info, he's dead. So, you know, maybe.
  • Let us bear in mind that the title of the post is "I am a cock." One layer of mystery dissolved. But as for the feel-no-painyness of fuyugare's cockhood, I have no frickin' idea.
  • Many comments in this thread makes no sense. Practically none of cynnbad's comments make any sense. Look at this woman from the internets. She barely fits into her jeans. Why is she so obese? Why are Americans such fat fucks? Does that makes sense? None of this makes sense!
  • And an island never cries. It's a simon and garfunkle song - "I am a rock"
  • Size 28??? I can't fit into size 28 jeans! How did she do that??
  • it's obvious that these recent troubles o' mine are karmically tied, retribution wise, to prior utterances of that phrase that must now never be mentioned Is it: ON TOP OF OLD SMOKEY! ?
  • Alnedra, Asian, UK and American sizing are all different. But you probably know that.
  • This is true. For example, I once boarded a plane at Heathrow being five-foot-eight, however when I arrived in Tokyo I was shocked to find I was only three inches high. I journeyed on to the US, where I became a four-dimensional "hypersphere"-shaped object. Only when I returned to the UK did I regain my proper size, although I had grown an extra leg. It's very useful for playing football and running after the hamster that stole my penis.
  • What size is 28 in Asia, or the UK? In North America, it would be for someone about 200-250 pounds (?) / 90 - 115 KG. An average 5'5" woman would wear a size about 10-14 - models are 5'7" + and wear a size 8.
  • I know that I'm a 12 in NZ (which I think uses UK sizes) and could wear an 8/9 in the US. And my shoe size in NZ is 8.5, 7.5 in the US, and 39 in Asia.
  • Apologies. Normal size for me is 14 for UK, 12 for US. BUT in Singapore, when it comes to jeans, size is determined by the number of inches at the waist. So I can squeeze into a size 29, am uncomfortable in size 30 and pretty ok in 31. 28 is unthinkable. In comparison, my mom, who is 2 inches shorter than I am, and about 15 kilograms lighter, is a petite size 10 in Asia, probably size 8 in UK, and size 6 (or XS, XXS) in US. Her waist is about 26 inches or possibly 25. But we both have the same shoe size, 36 or 4 1/2.
  • North American (Canada has the same system) sizes keep changing. I have a size 12 dress I stopped wearing because it didn't fit, but my new one (which is about a 14-16) is labelled size 12. They are different makes, but at the same time, I wonder how much it is that sizes may have changed that much over the last decade.
  • So we have grade-inflation in dress-sizes now?! When everyone's a supermodel, no one is. Do we really want such a world?
  • This is true. For example, I once boarded a plane at Heathrow being five-foot-eight, however when I arrived in Tokyo I was shocked to find I was only three inches high. ha! first laugh I have gotten out of this weird and pointless thread. And a cock feels plenty of pain, especially when it punched.
  • drjimmy - maybe not, if you're exposing someone else's cock. I still get the feeling that one, or maybe 2, accounts are being used by someone else. Or, maybe kamus's experience has me seeing ghosties in the shadows.
  • I would like to officially state that I AM NOT A COCK! despite the title of this weird and pointless thread
  • I would like to officially state that quidnunc is a loon. And I am tired of losing my caffienated beverages through my olfactory region.
