It's like Tivo for radio.
The awkwardly named BlogMatrix Jäger will automatically record a streamed audio broadcast, convert it to MP3 format, and store it on your iPod. Alas, until it leaves beta, the software will only run on Windows, so Mac users like me will have to wait. Any Windows types want to try it out and report back?

Jacobw There are a bunch of applications that will capture audio on a Mac. Converting them to mp3 and loading them on the iPod is simple as well. Although the automatic recording is a feature I haven't seen on them...that would be great! Check versiontracker for a list of mac audio recording programs.

You can already do the same thing on Windows with the excellent TotalRecorder. It'll record anything, and has extensive scheduling. Only thing it won't do (yet) is listen to RSS feeds. Though given how proactive the developer is, it'll probably have that too soon.

HuronBob, thanks for the tip. The audio capture programs look cool, but as you say, they're missing the automatic recording thing; as an American living abroad, I'd love a way to listen to all those radio programs from back home that (thanks to those pesky time zones) are no longer at practical times for me.

Jacobw, try Audio Hijack Pro. Includes a scheduler and MP3 encoder. Lovely program.

So in this case ipod = generic mp3 player? Aside from the automatic transfer-to-player, as that's easy enough to do manually. Also question for all: what's the best program to autocapture shoutcast streams?

what, you mac-types want us windows folks to take pity on you for you having to wait for something cool to come out for the mac? riiiiight. after all that "oooh, itunes is soooo coool, don't you wish you could use it" crap? like hell i'll report back to you. /sarcasm but hey, capturing streams. interesting. back in the heyday of monkey radio i would have loved this... monkey radio seems to be either offline or all weird jazz these days, no more technopornfunkgroove like it used to be.

I've been looking for something exactly like this. Thanks!

Caveat: not a problem for most users, but if you don't use iTunes or WMP10, Jäger won't load the recorded streams onto your iPod. Clunk interface, too. Records to WAV before reprocessing as an MP3, which may be an issue if you're low on disk space.

On the Mac, I believe you are looking at radioShark by Griffin Technology. A review of the product is discussed here.
