Committing George: Wedding Sites Well, I finally got down on one knee and popped the question. She said yes and she'll soon have the title of Mrs. Name That Itch. Huzzah. And now the exceedingly fun part: the planning. My question is: Does anyone know of any useful all-purpose wedding planning websites? I've looked at The Knot, but I'd like to see what else is exists.

This is my second go-round in getting hitched, but alas, Al Gore hadn't quite invented the internet back then. I've Googled, but the avalance of info is a tad bit overwhelming, to say the least.

  • Sorry I can be of no help, but congratulations to you and future Mrs Name That Itch.
  • My commiserations to the pending missus. No one can compete with Monkeybashi.
  • congratulations! my best recommendation is to check out indiebride. it's not the kind of site that sets out a calendar for you, but it offers a refreshing perspectives (and doesn't assume you've got $40,000 to blow of the affair). You can also ask questions in the kvetch section. your bride-to-be may find it a comfort in moments of difficulty. best of luck to you both!
  • Congrats! And ack - indiebride was going to be my suggestion. I just found it a while ago, and it looks cool. Wish I'd seen it before my wedding.
  • jccalcoun, I actually tried that approach, but she she came up with a plausible rebuttal: "And just how am I going to get you to stand up from the blackjack table for 15 frickin' minutes for the ceremony?"
  • Agreed on indiebride. The Knot is nearly intolerable to read; however, I do recommend skimming their local boards for your area occasionally. It's not a bad source for local names, phone numbers, crooked vendor warnings, etc - stuff you probably won't find on indiebride as they don't really have local boards. I planned a lovely, cheap, tasty, fun, and nearly stressless wedding using only Google, indiebride, and The Knot's local boards.
  • YOU POOR FOOL RUN. RUN NOW WHILE YOU CAN!!! (look at what happened to me!)
  • Awesome timing Name That Itch, I recently proposed as well and ever since then my fiance has taken on the full time hobby of making her dream wedding come to life (did I mention it's going to be a 1 1/2 year engagement? Yeah, she's "planning ahead"). So congrats and I'll definitely be taking some of the info mentioned here. PS: The bride to be is currently fooling around with Wedding Channel.
  • Congratulations and wonderful luck! FYI: White Robed Monks.
  • According to The Washington Post, the average wedding costs over $22,000. Holy balls. Nostril, I already got my practice marriage out of the way. This one should stick.
  • name that itch!!!! congrats!!! this is exciting indeed. i believe this site may have been wiped out in the Great and Messy Archives Disaster of '04, so here is what you REALLY need: wacky and wonderful wedding cake toppers!
  • Congrats, NTI. I wonder if my sister-in-law to-be is reading this; she might have some ideas. She's in PA and getting married in January. Where are you based, anyway?
  • She's in Pennsylvania? AND she's getting married in January?? My god, that's my fiance! Tracicle, we're gonna be related! Oops, no, strike that.... I'm in Virginia. Pretty close.
  • So why do you lot smear each other with wedding cake, that's what I want to know. Congrats btw, I was just joking before.
  • Good suggestions all...And thanks for the congrats.
  • Wow, SideDish. Those are, um, great!
  • Going Bridal
  • Congrats, and erm.. lucky you.
  • Hey NTI! So, yes, I am the one getting married in January in PA. What was I thinking, right? Don't ask, because I really don't know at this point. Down to the wire now. Really glad my soon to be sister-in-law directed me to this thread though! Checked out the IndieBride, and that was a great help. In terms of planning a wedding, The Knot local boards were a great help. And even though bridal mags are EVIL, I suggest getting one to at least to see what you are getting yourself into. All I can say is do what you please. . .it is your day! Don't get too many people involved and remember if it pleases you and your BTB, that's the choice you should go with. My biggest planning tools were the yellow pages, Google searches and recommendations from friends. You can spend hours of time on the internet looking for ideas, but it usually just drives you insane. I am insane now, but for totally different reasons. Fiance lives on the other side of the world, getting into crunch time at work, planning to move to other side of world, etc. Remember, this is YOU and Mrs. NTI's day. . . not your mother's, MIL or other crazy relative/friend's!
  • Excellent advice, roxihart. I hope all goes well with your upcoming nuptuals AND your move. One or the other is tough enough, but both? Yeesh.
  • The good thing about the bridal mags (and websites I guess, although I haven't looked) is the checklist at the back that lists everything you need to do by the time to go until the wedding.
  • You can also read my upcoming book, "The Trans-Continental Bride" It explains things like finding THE dress and bridesmaids dresses in one day, at one shop in 3 hours.
  • Which, I take, you wrote whilst making the guest list, lining up a DJ, arranging a honeymoon in Ireland, buying the rings, renting a limo, and growing your own flowers, all at the same time.
  • Ah, so that's how you plan to support that boy. :)
