• Might I suggest getting a CD burner and making back-up disks every now and then? In my circle of friends I'm the one who always gets the calls when people's computers crap out with desperate cries for help. "Sure I can get it all back for you, just bring your computer over and I'll reinstall the OS and copy back all your files from your back up disks." "ummm...I don't have back up disks...is there anything you can do?" Inevitably their hard drive will sound like a blender with a few rocks in it, not be visible to the computer and still they'll be asking me to do "something, anything." One person spent $1800 for a restoration service to get her master's thesis and a client's book she'd been editing for a number of month's back from a drive that was completely gone. Fortunately the actual spindles hadn't been damage though. I'm not meaning to mock your situation or anything, but please, really, just burn a CD or two now and then with the important stuff. Everyone please, promise me, back-up!
• loto, not to ruin your happy vibe with the Suicide Girls, but they're really a totally shady outfit. Their contracts are the worst in the industry, giving the girls no rights to anything and they're not allowed to work in erotic modeling anywhere else, ever (repeat EVER). Stupid young things who don't read legal documents sign-up then get screwed later on, and not in the "yay, screwing for money is fun" sort of way. I'm not big into porn, at least in the viewing sense, but you might enjoy http://www.darkplay.net/. The people who run it area actual decent humans and respect those they work with as actual human beings. There's a whole buncha sites that all link together membership wise, but have one joint billing/membership thingy.
• Nowadays I'd buy a DVD burner, unless there are some problems with backing up to them. Backing up modern HDs, even just your personal files (if you do photography, for instance) 700MB at a time is a PITA.

• Reinstalling should never cause you to lose documents. It's not that hard to back up-- even if you don't want to be bothered making physical backups, just rename your (assuming Windows xp) "documents and settings" and "program files" directories before reinstalling, and later pick through them at your leisure for anything you miss. If you're reformatting in the process, of course, you'll have to move them somewhere else. Also, for foolproof safety, CD backups are the way to go.

• I totally sympathize with you squid, I lost a masive amount of good bookmarks with a hard drive crash. I'm going to be using this thread alot. But that being said, why is everyone holding out on their bookmarks? Most of these should've been posted to the main page a long time ago. Sure, some of these don't need a FPP, but many do. That's what this site is for, isn't it? Otherwise, we're really just a newsfilter.

I've just set it up for shared users, so if you want a ton o' links, go here: Shared bookmarks username: shared password: 2tonchumchum Please use the pruple buttons to the top left to add, see, and search the shared bookmarks. If anyone shits on it, I'll have to shut it down, but we'll see how it goes. I have everything backed up anyway. Enjoy!

• A couple of months ago, I began the process of slowly moving all of my links into del.icio.us. I've almost completed the job, and I love using it already. Between making easy backups, access from anywhere, and the joy of tabs, I can't believe I haven't been using something like this all along. My other favorite site right now is Flickr, in case you're not using it already.

• Even if you aren't into Linux, it's handy to keep a Knoppix CD around. You can boot and operate all from your CD drive, and use the programs supplied to explore and retrieve files from your hard drive if it's still working. I've used it several times to help myself and friends retrieve un-backed-up files before doing the ol' re-format and reinstall that Windows sometimes requires. There are a few other bootable from CD Linux flavors specifically geared for system repair, but I'm not sure what they are exactly.
• Some of my favorite links are on my MeFi user page; others are on the right side of the LH page.
• I work from a lot of different computers, and a lot of different hard drive partitions, at a lot of different locations. A few years ago, I got tired of constantly exporting bookmark files back and forth, and there's only so many URLs my brain can remember. So I set up an old-sk00l links page on my server, and use it as my browser's home page. (That way I can pull it up just by clicking the "home" button, which otherwise is a button I really have no use for.) It's a smidge more trouble to maintain, as compared with browser bookmarks, but the portability is well worth the dab of extra effort. Sometimes the old low-tech methods really ARE the best way to go.

• Ok, I've had my sister, who was the recipient of my generous donation of all my links (with the exception of my porn) export the links into a Firefox html file via Safari Bookmark Exporter. She emailed me the html file that has all the links and folders. Now I can't figure out how to get them into Firefox. I've tried the import command which asks me what program I am importing from but doesn't allow me to import from a file and have tried replacing my sister's exported bookmark file for Firefox's previous bookmarks with no success. It just goes back to the old bookmarks that I had before. Any suggestions?

• Squid: Wipe (or move) your Firefox prefs, install Mozilla, import bookmarks with Mozilla, run Firefox (as if the first time, which will let you import or will automatically pull in Mozilla prefs).

• No, it imported right from a contacts file that I exported from Entourage. I'm glad it's all there, now I just have to find a way to get it out without copying a pasting each and every contact (about 150) back into Entourage.
