Fantomas!
"Fantomas."
"What did you say?"
"I said: Fantomas."
"And what does that mean?"
"Nothing... And everything!"
"But what is it?"
"Nobody... And yet, it is somebody!"
"And what does that somebody do?"
"Spreads terror!"

So -- seems the French took up where Raffles, E. W. Hornung's amateur cracksman, left off. Great link, Wolof<!

I've never read the comics but I certainly do remember being so scared when i was watching the movies on TV (the ones with Jean Marais). Luckily, Louis de Funès was there to balance that. Thanks for the memory, Wolof.

Very cool art. I can see what they mean by his being the arch-villan prototype.

I remember being incredibly frustrated that in every Fantomas movie, he escapes in the end. Also, I was recently creeped out by the ending of a Fantomas/de Funès flick: They behead a man (using a guillotine) but it turns out IT'S NOT FANTOMAS (cue sinister music). Beheadings are creepy.
