Musical George: There's this song I keep hearing - it's about avoiding people who come knocking on your door. I think it's from the 70's; its chorus is currently being used in a commercial. The chorus is a one line thing that keeps getting repeated, like, five times, but might not directly relate to the theme of the song. Does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?

If not, feel free to throw rotten bananas at me for such a waste of a FPP.

  • ???
  • Which ad? AdTunes can be of great help.
  • What's the commercial for?
  • mexican wins. by Men At Work (Aussie band, I believe)
  • lyrics here
  • by Men At Work (Aussie band, I believe) *is deeply ashamed*
  • *adores Men at Work* Did anyone else see the acoustic version of "Overkill" on Scrubs? I'd love to get a copy of it from somewhere.
  • Scotch-Aussie, actually. But did I really win? Where's Mfpb 2 21? I like Men At Work. And Midnight Oil. Silverchair can bite me.
  • I played in band with member of Men at Work, although not one of the original guys, more one of their session player replacement-style fellows. This chap had his own show on the ABC for a while, too. Also shared a house with him.
  • Note for Nos or other Australians ... I also played with Ross Hannaford, members of Paul Kelly's band, (for years), Steve Cummings band, people like that. Some of you people will know these folks, others won't.
  • I used to love that song :)
  • Is it just me, or do Men at Work only have two good songs? I like that one too, and also Down Under, but the rest of the album sucks.
  • Is it just me, No, they actually don't have any.
  • At least it wasn't Bananaphone.
  • Is it just me, or do Men at Work only have two good songs? at least three - "It's A Mistake" has always been one of my favorites... and timely, these days.
  • THANKS for getting that song / songs stuck in my head. No really. *mutters, stalks off*
  • Ooh Men At Work! I love them! I'd forgotten about them! Haven't listened to them for ages! They rock! *goes to dig through old record collection with anticipatory glee* Thanks for reminding me everyone!
  • at least three - "It's A Mistake" has always been one of my favorites... and timely, these days. Come on now...how can you NOT love "Dr. Hekyll and Mr. Jive"? IT'S ART, I TELL YOU! And don't you look at ME cockeyed!
  • Hated "It's a Mistake." I remember the silly anti-nuke video. I believe that was the follow-up to "Overkill" from their second album, Cargo. However, "Be Good Johnny" was the third single off their first album, "Business as Usual." I liked that one. it was "Who Can It Be Now?," "Down Under," and "Be Good Johnny." I would like to add that I have just provided this information without looking up anything. I also have never owned a Men at Work album. Instead, I was brainwashed by my brother in the late 70's to record and study the Billboard Top 40. I finally broke the habit in 85 or so. As such, my knowledge of 77 to 85 or so in pop music is practically unmatched. The therapy continues.
  • It took the invention of the Internet for me to finally find out what vegemite is. Wikepedia describes it as a "salty food paste." Now, I'm not sure I really need to know.
  • Also known as "cum."
  • I don't think it would qualify as food. Subsistence would be fun but tough, due to the sheer amount needed.
  • Vegemite is some of the saltiest shit I have ever put in my mouth. Impossibly, it seemed to be even saltier than straight salt. Isn't it supposed to taste a little like beef? It doesn't, but it's supposed to. And isn't there another brand, like "Busko" or something? It's been so long since I was out of the country...
  • Did anyone else see the acoustic version of "Overkill" on Scrubs? Yes. That was probably their best episode, IMO. One of, anyway. Sadly, I have no tape.
  • "Let 'Em In" by Paul McCartney talks a lot about doors and knocking, though I think it doesn't match the rest of your description of the song you're seeking.
  • Vegemite's made from yeast and vegetables. An Aussie I once knew said too much of it tasted like engine lubricant. I much prefer Marmite, which is made purely from yeast (AFAIK), and a friend of mine swears by Bovril, made from beef extract (but only if made in UK). But they're all brown, gooey, incredibly salty stuff. I used to get salt highs by dipping a chopstick in a bottle of Marmite and slowly licking minute amounts of the stuff stuck to the chopstick.
  • tracicle - for the acoustic version of "Overkill" and other lovely bits of music from Scrubs, check here.
  • Ah, thanks Mickey. That should have been an obvious place to look. :)
  • Wolof: How can you live in Adelaide and be cooler than me? We just had a really important horse race! pfah! Men at Work. hmph
  • pris, I haven't always lived in Adelaide. Done my time in Melbourne and Sydney, too.
  • And anyone who says Wolof isn't cool gets a big thick HAMMER lip!
  • owieee! no hurting!
  • Thanks everyone for the answers... I, um, promise to get back here but right now I'm all over the election thread like butter on beans.
  • The Vegemite song! - bottom o' the page. Wonderful stuff. Although, Aussies also eat canned spaghetti on toast for breakfast.
  • Wolof, I'd be more amused if you'd ever played with Rolf Harris. My nephew loaned me a cd of his: a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody.
  • I think that's it.... thank you guys. Sorry about the sparse details, I was kinda in a hurry. And Alnedra, put DOWN the hammer!
  • How many years has Rolf lived in the UK for now? 25? 30?
  • Hey.. wolof can't be cool if he hasn't lived in Brissie ;)
  • I know what Marmite tastes like. And Bovril. *shudders* But what does kangaroo taste like?
  • But what does kangaroo taste like? It's not bad. Very low in fat. I wish people ate more of it ... kangaroos are the sort of animal this ancient continent can support. They pad about on the depleted topsoil and the fragile grasses rather than ripping them apart with their hooves. *waves at Brisbane*
  • Drove past a wallaby this morning that'd been hit by a car. *sigh* *waves at adelaide*
  • Kangaroo is really nice, richly flavoured and with firm, juicy flesh (if it's cooked right - can be tough if overcooked) - and it's lean. Cook it as you would beef, or venison (so long as the saucing isn't too rich) I had emu salami once. Once. Ew.
