Curious George: I need some help finding a sci-fi book from some vague details.
  • Yup, vague. The setting is in the future where a new species has evolved to compete with humans. The new species reproduces asexually. That’s all I can remember, any help would be appreciated.
  • Earth Rise? Or something else here?
  • I don't think so, but those do seem close. I remember the cover from one of the series and those don't match. I also don't remember any alien invasion, the new species evolved from humans.
  • Left Hand of Darkness ?
  • Perhaps you're thinking of the Wraethu by Storm Constantine. I'm a bit too lazy for links at the moment, and it's been rather a long time since I read the first book, but that seems to fit the bill.
  • Wraethu, that's it. Thanks everyone.
  • WTF does this have to do with the election
  • Can I hijack the thread and ask if anyone can recommend a good translation of The Chaung-tzu? I'm working on a paper and the one I'm using is kind of painful to get through. I have the Thomas Merton collection, but I was looking for a full version.
  • Obviously the humans represent the Republicans and the asexual competition represents the Democrats
  • FedoraUndershirt whatever you do, don't use the Thomas Cleary one. I would recommend Lin Yutang's translations (for example here). Disclaimer: I don't read or write chinese :)
  • Fedora: Try this.
  • Right answer in four replies! God I love this site... Can't wait till I need to ask you all something again!
  • Great work in this thread!
  • OK, while we're highjacking threads, how about this one which I read as a child and have long since forgotten the title of: It was old and pulpy, probably written in the 50's. For a juvenile audience. It was about a space 'cadet' going through training and being sent to Venus. The Venusians are large, warty, reptilian/amphibious. One character learns venusian in his sleep from a playback device. The plot features a secret message being sent in the form of a signet ring containing a tiny spool of wire. now that I look at it, I hope I haven't conflated details from multiple books... I know it's not Heinlein's "Space Cadet" but could very well have been Heinlein.
  • Thanks dhruva and Zanshin :)
