Virtual reality in 1970 (Click top-left icon, RealPlayer video) Myron Krueger, in 1970, created a version of virtual reality program wherein people, in silhouette form, could interact with rudimentary virtual objects. The video of this program (top left icon on the page) is one of the most eerily beautiful things I've ever seen.

Make sure to sit through the whole thing, as a variety of programs are demoed. It's like my commodore 64 took acid.

  • Cool. Like Tron, but without the Neil Young "music." I've never been to a rave, but that's what the first couple of programs remind me of. (Do the kids still do the raving?) The figure rolling around on the string makes me think of this. (Weird, how finding this link made me nostalgic for the WTC. I always thought those buildings were artless, soul-crushing bullies, especially from up close. I guess stuff becomes part of you if it's in your life long enough.) Thx for the link.
  • The top left icon just goes to the same address that you provided ( ... Krueger.html#KruegerText). I've tried tab-keying through every clickable link on the page, and none lead to any video file. Did they get rid of the video, or am I just retarded?
  • applauds. way to go geeks! i know little nothing abougt john cage. his work, including influencing this number, is fascinating. thanks the meh.
  • Mr. Knickerbocker: Yeah, it's a weird link, I can imagine it not working in some browsers. Here is a direct link to the video page.
  • More on Krueger here (with more pictures), here (audio interview), here and here. However, nothing here - any monkey feel up to adding to the sum of collaborative geeky knowledge?
