Fiendish Chinese socks must be stopped. Such, at least, is the conclusion of our wise leaders, who are valiantly combatting the Overseas Sock Threat by capping imports from China. (Link to washingtonpost.com, reg.req., bugmenot is your friend.)

Electioneering protectionism? Or would an influx of Chinese socks pose a genuine threat to our pure bodily fluids?

  • How many cylinders do these sino-socks have?
  • Or are they just attacking the legitimacy of the Boston Red Sox?
  • When my socks disappear, I usually blame a multidimensional rip in the time-space continuum. Bless the Chinese for their inventive, prison-labor-based solution.
  • "...how to deal with a momentous change looming in the global textile and apparel industry." Heh.
  • I, for one, buy only canadian socks. But then, I am canadian.
  • Canadian socks eh? I prefer the hand-knit Musk Ox or qiveut socks myself, although they're a little pricey for everyday wear. For work, Canadian lumberjacks (when they're not wearing suspendies and a bra) prefer socks from J.B. Field's Socks, a firm with a long and fabled history in Canada and who today are, as they say, "in the forefront of modern sock manufacture". In Canada, even The Great One takes his socks seriously. We may however, just like the Chinese, have some difficulty exporting our fine products to the US. But them cheap Chinese imitations - hah! They ain't got nothin' on us.
  • /head explodes
  • Nostril wears socks on his head?
  • Fields alway has socks appeal for me.
  • How long after you buy foreign made socks does it take for them to become naturalized citizens?
  • And does this bring a whole new meaning to "ethnic cleansing"?
  • Eurosox: Play the Socksbee game and win free socks! Traditionally, Rohner socks are mainly sewn to the hand. Stocking stigmata?
  • LOL, fish tick! "The difficulty: Caution! you play with the two opposite platforms." Even more difficult with your socks sewn to your hands, I imagine.
  • My feet are cold.
  • The practice of sewing socks to the hands eliminates the need for the string between socks (traditionally run up one pantleg and down the other, to prevent annoying sock loss), but it tends to make bipedal ambulation challenging.
  • Safety-pinning your socks to your cuffs eventually pulls your trousers down unless your wear braces/suspenders. CAUTION, natty dressers: Also causes unsightly puckers in both cuffs and socks.
