n00bz 1337!!!111!! This guide is designed to give you a better understanding of what a noob is, how to recognize them, some details about them, and how to avoid or get rid of them. It mostly applies to online forums, which are the main targets of migrating noobs. w00t!!11!!
  • Can we put this in the FAQ?
  • Read the above parts of this guide carefully. If you find yourself unable to comprehend any of it but are instead beginning to think about how great you are and how awesome 'teh 1337' is, you might want to take one of the many available online quizzes to check your noobancy. This is funny.
  • THAT iz Liek so g4Y! OMG.. WTF?! I am teh b00mb. R0xx0rz. K0k0 yoo r liek s0 st00pd. U R the n00b in h3r3!!!!! i shuld pwn you! I h0p3 y00 by H4l0 2, s0 my kl4n can pwn y00. 1337 4eva! OMG!!!!!! (It's hard to type in leet).... seriously.. that was fucking hilarious... I hate those n00bs!
  • OLOLOLOLOL D3B4Z3R626. I 4m teh 1337 COH pwnzr. U h4v3 COH? IT RULZ U!!!11!!! Teh n00bz suXXor!!11!!!1111w00t! (Translation: I play City of Heroes, which though beset by many irritating n00bs, is still a great game.)
  • But this Adam person....I wish the links to some of his quotes worked. I feel like I'm missing out. Hysterical, Koko.
  • You know, I always thought 1337 sp34k was a myth. I have hung out in pretty 'leet' places (doing artwork for a warez-oriented magazine & the 90s underground ANSI artscene) and I've never seen anyone use l33t seriously.
  • 1337 n00bs are so 1980s. Gimmee a Usenet troll anyday.
  • I was about to post in the "Cheer Me Up" thread, but I figure this is probably the more appropriate thread for my first post on MoFi. Oh wait, I mean, uh, hay guyz im new ASL?!/1 21/M/tornotno here ;DDDDD ttyl kbye
  • Is there some kind of glossary for this language?
  • cynnbad: why, yes.
  • Well welcome, meh. How's the weather in tornotno? OMG!!! i liek t0t477y pwnd y00!!!! Tho' I'm assuming the misspell was intentional. Cynnbad, I never paid much attention to leet users or the language of leet. Terms like IMHO (In My Humble Opinion, for you n00bs) WTF? are acceptable to me, along with the occasionally, properly placed LOL, but with few other exceptions (pr0n very rarely, Internets speak is retarded. As far as I can tell, you must type "teh" instead of "the,""pwn" I guess that's a super-own3d, and replace "A" with "4," "E" with "3," "L" with "7" and "O" with "0" (I know I'm missing a few, but fuck it, my IQ is dropping just talking about this. OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!
  • Which is evidently made apparent, by my inability to properly close parens... ummm... duuuuhhhhhhhhh me st00pd
  • Thanks, Richer and middleclasstool. I honestly wouldn't have even known what search terms to try. Obviously I'm not a tech type. When I first encountered this, I thought it was either intentional gibberish or highly evolved programming code that was going to infect my computer. I find this fascinating. I intend to deconstruct this discourse and sell the parts on e-bay.
  • I mentioned a few days ago that I play an online RPG called Legend Arena which is heavily populated by pubescent boys. The forum for the game is thick with non-ironic 1337-sp34k. liek omgwtf lolz0rz!!!!one!1 j00 4r3 50 pwnd!!!1!
  • Can you communicate with these people?
  • ... and welcome, the meh. Is your username more of that naughty leek speek?
  • tracicle: that's news to me. Even my 15 years old self wouldn't use leet-speek without irony.
  • So is it leek-speek or leet-bleep? Why are you so secretive? And wjy do tdu hate Ameripoca/??
  • Debaser: Yeah, the spelling error was intnetional. Cynnbad: It wasn't intended to be leetspeak, but now I feel all self-conscious that it could be seen that way. Curse my lack of forethought in namechoosing... I'm such a freakin' n00b.
  • I know this has fallen off the page, but of course you're a l##t in nt ttes "all mistakes intentional"
  • Incidentally, I used to think that LOL meant "lots of love." So you can imagine that I laughed inappropriately at the wrong things. i.e. "My dad died recently." "Oh I'm so sorry to hear that -- LOL." No wonder the internets hate me.
  • I seem to be dominating this thread, and I'm sorry. I really do find this sub-culture interesting. If only because they created their own semiotics (made-up word). It's very tribal.
  • Well, you've posted a comment that made me laugh. I spent a lot of time reading l33t, back when I was part of its early subcultures. But it seemed to be a joke (tracicle set me right). On your LOL mistake, you might like this mildly amusing filler about gangsta speak, something that intersected with l33t when I was in th 4Ns1 sc3n3.
  • w00t is word of the year for Merriam-Websters. I'm confused by the etymology. Some reports say "we owned other team", others say "derived from whoot". I'd assumed that it was a bastardization of "root". Does this make me a n00b or a n3wb?
  • I thought it was "Woo!" with a T.
  • It makes you a n00b@dübad3wb.
  • I had always heard it was a mash-up between "loot" (as in, "I just found loot in this MMORPG and now it belongs to me") and "Woo" (as Tracicle said). Spelled with zeroes for extra coolness, of course. The Jargon File isn't much help on this one, I'm afraid.
  • I missed the OP first time around. The article might be cute and funny and possibly informative, but I seriously can't read it. Who the hell puts a hover property on plain text?!
  • Ed Sullivan?
