Vladimir Endorses Bush Take that, Kerry! With your 'world leaders' supporting you! George's good friend "Vlad-uh-muhr" comes out in support of the president, and says that if Bush loses, terrorism will spread. Has he been talking to Cheney?

I know the non-US monkeys are deluged with US links, but this one does at least have the benefit of touching on the broader world--or, at least, Russia.

  • Uh-huh. Yeah, I want to take democracy advice from a guy who's going on a power grab in his own country.
  • Perhaps it's one of those "I'll scratch your back, if you scratch mine" situations.
  • What is going to make me cry is when I hear people tell me that Bush is the man to vote for because Putin supports him. Kerry could name every leader in the free world as a supporter of his, and he would be mocked for seeking the support of other nations. Bush, however, should be elected because of the endorsement of a man who is single-handedly dismantling an infant democracy.
  • dismantling...democracy He knows Bush will want pointers at the start of his second term. *wishes he were joking*
  • Crypto-absolutist Putin endorses Bush. Well... I'm convinced. Has Mugabe announced yet?
  • This is great. What's the word from China, Myanmar, North Korea, and Turkmenistan?
  • I remember when the Chretien government in Canada, before the election in 2000, let slip that they would prefer a Gore administration. That resulted in us getting the cold shoulder from George for about a year and a half after he was appointed. Canada is nothing much, you see, just the US's largest trading partner by far. Yep, if George is "re-elected" it looks like he won't be travelling much for a while, just shuttling between Washington, Crawford and Moscow. Doh! Don't forget Canberra!
  • Kerry's answer from a debate, when asked about Vlad:
...I regret what's happened [in Russia] in these past months. And I think it goes beyond just the response to terror. Mr. Putin now controls all the television stations. His political opposition is being put in jail. And I think it's very important to the United States, obviously, to have a working relationship that is good. This is a very important country to us. We want a partnership. But we always have to stand up for democracy. As George Will said the other day, "Freedom on the march; not in Russia right now."
So Putin's looking at two candidates... one kisses his ass, and the other is taking a harder line. Of course he wants W to win!
  • Putin backs Bush and Bush represents the "Putinization of American life".
  • Thank's for that debate quotation, the_bone. Missed that. And I know that if Kerry wins he will not treat Russia like George did Canada. Reason #467 to vote for John Kerry.
  • I know I have harped on this point before, but what the fuck kind of Republicans are these?? Did reagan seek endorsements from [name of Soviet leader in early 80s whose name escapes me, Breshnev perhaps?] I can see it now: "Putin offers troops to rid Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Balkans, etc of terrorists and construction of 'anti-terror wall' in Berlin; Bush backs enthusiastically"
  • When did we shift into Bizarro world? I don't understand what either leader has to gain from endorsing the other. Is the Bush campaign this desperate gain some foreign policy cred? Didn't Putin resent the patronizing anti-terror Bush rhetoric after Beslan? OH, wait. This makes perfect sense. They both have similar views of democracy, don't they? Let's sacrifice free speech in favor of strong, centralized government. And...What about Poland? On preview, what drjimmy11 said; Reagan must be rolling over in his grave.
  • Didn't you hear that Ronnie has turned into a flesh-eating zombie. Tsk, tsk Dr. Zira. What you guys should be clamouring for is the opinion of the great Turkmenbashi!
  • Excellent spotting of the Count, Alex. Obviously the amoral vampires feel the need to stick together in order to protect themselves and support the illusion that they're actually decent people, not bloodsucking fascists.
