Man ordered to pay $1,000 for hurtful comment. Time to dig through the high school yearbook and make with the litigating.
  • The utterer of the comment is a used car salesman for Roger Poirier Automobile. Here's from the CBC. Basically, he called a gay man a "fifi" (in French). that's somewhere between "faggot" and "sissy".
  • While I doubt anyone's going to defend the comment itself, I think he should have the right to say it in a private conversation, and not that much matters beyond that, but he didn't even say it to the man's face.
  • Well, it's not looking like the media 'round here are paying much attention: I can't find anything on Quebec's daily newspapers.
  • Ridiculous. Fined for using a euphamism in private conversation? Only in Quebec!
  • The translation of "fait attention à lui, c'est un fifi" should not be "pay attention to him, he's a fag". That's clearly "watch out, he's a fag". Like if the guy was going to get raped or something. And doing s/fag/protestant/ is pretty fucking offensive.
  • (And yes, at one time, in Quebec, you would have been warned if you travelled with a Protestant)
  • In the spirit of politicizing everything short of a sneeze, one wonders if this piece of litigation spells doom for the minority government.
  • "It makes me look like a criminal," he said. "Fifi -- you just can't say that." *giggles*
  • IT WILL!@# Paul Martin will have to resign and then the NPD will take over. Canada is DOOMED. DOOMED I tell you. And frankly, if you want to be offensive, you use "fif". using "fifi" makes you sound, well, fifi.
  • Fait attention à lui, c'est un vendeur de voitures d'occasion.
  • Exactly, flashboy. Though it is not a finable offense, I wouldn't call a man a used car salesman unless I really, really wanted to disrespect him.
  • blame canada and quebecers still do feel shame for letting celine dion breed. other countries just aren't as casually rude as the US in public but behind closed doors--
  • I bet Adam Yoshida's all over this.
  • if you want to be offensive, you use "fif". Thanks, richer! Duly noted.
  • 'fif?' feh.
  • is this a fifdom?
  • or a femidom? or a condom
