Emperor Norton: In 1869 he abolished both the Democratic and Republican parties.

You can view his other proclamations here. I was reminded of our King by this thread. How long do you think it'd take the police, or the nice men with butterfly nets, to nab someone who declared himself Protector of Mexico and started printing his own money nowadays?

  • A newspaper report on his death and funeral. There was also a Sandman comic about him, too (I don't know if the comic can be found online, but its in this collection).
  • The MeFi Norton thread has some funny comments.
  • This bloke believes he's the reincarnation of King Arthur, and the rightful King of Britain. (If I remember correctly, he was actually granted the right to carry his sword with him by the courts - the only person in Britain, pretty much, to be allowed to carry a weapon in public.)
  • A better interview with King Arthur here, actually. I really should learn to press preview instead of post.
  • dng - all Sikh's are allowed to carry blades in the UK as it's part of their religion, though they do need a license if it's longer than six inches.
  • I didn't know that, BigCalm. Thanks.
  • We need no stinkin' license to carry machetes here.
  • Wow, an altogether satisying and eye-opening series of links. I now want to research King Norton further. Possibly also the King Arthur, but I am a usian monkey after all...
