GOP oversight: Somehow, an oversight at Republican headquarters in West Virginia results in the GOP calling up registered Democrats and attempting to convince these registered voters that they're not allowed to vote this election. Despite the fact that this is an obvious accident, the local authorities over-react by giving the culprit a stern lecture.
  • That is quite something, though not surprising at all. The more stories there are about Republicans trying to supress the vote, the more people think that I am crazy for telling them about it. For some reason, the more facts that I am able to cite, the more people think I am nuts.
  • I think that's pretty much SOP for the Republican party. This isn't news but it's another example of their willingness to do anything to win, even it means undermining democracy itself.
  • Googling "department dirty tricks GOP" will enlighten the curious about the time-honoured strategies and practices of the Republican party.
  • You bunch of cynics. Didn't you read it? They're actually to *improve and expand* the democratic process! So they accidentally wound up trying to keep some Democrats out in the course of doing that. Sometimes eggs must be broke that the people might have omelettes!
  • Man, I wish it weren't so impossible to tell sarcasm when reading posts defending Republican actions, but a quick glance at Mr. Knickerbocker's political compass assures me that there was, indeed, sarcasm a plenty.
  • Knickerbocker: Please to indicate by signs or sigils that your posts have sarcastic nature next time. I was preparing to unleash a mighty torrent of unseemly wrath in your direction and that would ruin my Sunday. Maybe a smiley.
  • drivingmenuts: please develop a sense of humour. I don't think Mr. K could have made his sarcasm any more obvious,
  • The October edition of Vanity Fair has a very depressing essay about Florida 2000 focussing on the Supreme Court and voting, er, irregularities (and the problems that remain in 2004). You can download pdfs of the essay here at the SCOTUSblog.
  • The last sentence threw me off the first time around too.
  • I'm gonna need blood pressure medication before this election is over.
  • fuyugare, I obviously sympathize with drivingmenuts, because I couldn't tell, either. In my experience, Knickerbocker's representation of Republican support was frighteningly accurate. It was only by suspecting, and eventually verifying Knickerbocker's political affiliation that I could be sure that it was sarcasm.
  • I'm gonna need blood pressure medication before this election is over. Just make sure you don't get it from a third world country via Canada!
  • Heh, sorry for the confusion Sandspider and drivingmenuts. I assumed my defense of the GOP was so poor that it was obviously insincere. But I was using their own apology, so... I guess they were being sarcastic, too.
  • JG: I'll try but it's so hard to tell where the meds come from when you buy them on the internets.
  • Another strategy in this case might be to think about the last time you actually saw a *filter FPP that truly was sympathetic to the Republican cause.
  • ...the last time you actually saw a *filter FPP that truly was sympathetic to the Republican cause. outrigger, when was the last time you actually saw a Republican that truly was sympathetic to the Republican cause? This article has a perfect example. It supposed to be to a Republican value that large orginizations can be and will be self-policing. The party line says that a large orginization wouldn't tollerate the people in it pulling under-handed and dirty tricks, since in the long run it will damage the orginization. Yet look at the actions of the Republicans in the article; They obviously don't have this Republican value. Another Republican value: Their stance on deficit spending is don't spend money you don't have. Look at the deficit now, and look at the all the Republicans that want to increase the amount were spending. Or big government vs. small government: Republicans value small government, yet flip through the Patriot Act, or the DMCA. State rights: Republicans believe a state should make it's own laws, not the federal government. But Republicans just pushed for a constitutional amendment to restrict state rights, and restrict personall freedoms, another Republican value. The Republican haven't been sympathetic to the Republican cause for a long time. 30 years ago, back when the Democrats were the war-monger party, the GOP held Republican values. But somewhere between then and now they've abbondoned it, and took up the cause Democrats had 30 years ago.
  • When/if Kerry gets elected/ does not have the election stolen from him by Satan's Lil' Helpers, I hope his initial speech goes like this: "Our first act of business as a newly elected government will be to take some time and examine in detail all of the crimes of the administration you just booted out on its ass. See you in ten months or so."
  • Mr. Knickerbocker, I agree completely. Basically all I meant to refer to was a "pro-GOP FPP", but that's too many acronyms. However, surely all those righteous placard-holders at Bush rallies are "sympathetic to the Republican cause" - so I have seen them. What's funny is that they can't figure out that their cause left the building some time ago, which you point out.
  • I believe that's called a "+GOP FPP" ;)
  • their cause left the building some time ago And the current administration is waiting for the free market to magically take care of the elephant droppings. *Grumbles about Teddy Roosevelt spinning in his grave.
  • I'm gonna need blood pressure medication before this election is over Christ, I passed that point a long time ago. I am planning on reserving myself a hospital bed on the (real) chance that Bush wins. I'm sure I'm gonna have a coronary.
  • Thanks for that link, Mackerel. My parents and siblings live in Nevada. I just fired off some emails to them about it. A group, don't know the name, spent a lot of time getting registrations here at the local University, and they gathered a lot of registrations. They also handed out Nader literature. I have to investigate now.
  • ITS LIKE FUCKING DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN Fucking criminal bastards.
