How great is Bob Dylan? Think of all the great albums, all the great songs. Highway 61, Nashville Skyline, New Morning, the Basement Tapes, Blood on the Tracks, Desire, Infidels, Time Out of Mind -- to mention just a few. And all the awesome bootleg-and-B-side stuff that's been coming out over the past 15 or so years. And that voice, that indirect but evocative outsider's voice that is eerily illuminating of our culture. Check out the excerpt of his new book published last week in Newsweek. (My apologies if this link has already been posted.)

What I meant to say was, if you could could only have one Bob Dylan album, what would it be and why? (Me, it would be Desire, mainly because of the way it makes me travel through time to my early teenhood, when I didn't really like Dylan but was compelled to listen to his oracular voice, and ended up falling in love with the song "Isis" in a way that showed me how deep one's relationship with music could be.) Or else: What's your favorite Dylan song?
