Theo Jansen
builds mobile sculputural creatures of plastic yellow tubes. The walking skeletons are powered by wind energy. Eventualy he wants "to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives."
The movies are not to be missed!

Oooooh... I recall this page from years ago.... when will they put higher res videos? Please?

So now we aim for our non-biodegradable trash to walk the earth under wind power, to pollute the beaches in a spot of their own choosing? Interesting. [/snark] On a more quirky note, I wonder how adaptable these designs are to a smaller scale. Assuming the "walking" is robust enough, I can imagine this might be a cheap method of exploring other worlds like Mars. Set up a robust scientific payload on the back, let loose on planet, let planetary wind carry platform to random places for long periods of time, reap years of data which space-skeptics will insist proves that it's all done on a Hollywood backlot.
