Kryptonite takes one for the team. In response to the recent revelation that anyone could pick your bike lock with a pen, the lock manufacturer has announced a lock exchange program.

The official site is barely responding at the moment, so here's what they have to say:

If you currently own a Kryptonite tubular cylinder lock and are concerned about the security of this lock, Kryptonite will exchange this lock for you with a comparable non-tubular cylinder lock.
  • So, I have to send them my lock, and then wait around for a new one to show up? How the heck am I supposed to lock my bike in the interm?
  • At Kryptonite, we understand the responsibility that comes with being the market leader. Did the market really need to be led in the direction of compromised security?
  • You could use some string and a luggage lock that has one of the tiny keys. I'm sure that'd be secure too.
  • You have to send mail to kryptonite@irco.com and they supposedly send you an email with instructions. I haven't received anything yet, unless my SPAM filters got it.
  • What is with the headline Lock Manufacturer Continues to Set the Standard for Security -- doesn't that totally contradict the story?
  • No one said it was a high standard for security...
