Man telephones his own funeral
  • "I think I'm going for a walk.." "You're not fooling anyone, you know."
  • "'This was Dane on the phone, so she actually thought that she was dead or talking to a ghost or something and just about lost her mind.'" This is how fucking stupid people really are. Like, the first thing you think is "it's his ghost" - OK, fair enough - but the second thought is "why would a ghost need to use a phone?" Sure, she's distraught etc, but crikey. Would you think this? [POINTS AT YOU] We're all doomed.
  • This would have made a great episode of Crank Yankers.
  • I dunno. I can't imagine the shock at something like this. Start with bottoming out when you hear a loved one has died, do the day-to-day hellish slog of preparing for his funeral, and then you get a call from the dead guy, while you're at the funeral. Strikes me as the equivalent of kicking someone's psyche in the groin. It might be a bit much to expect logic from someone in such a state.
  • Oh man, that dude blew the best opportunity EVAR of disappearing without a trace. Shit, I fantasize about that happening to me.
  • Hmmm. It seems fuyugare has spoken wisely. I must meditate on this...
  • you should understand also that the newfounders' are a unique and unusual people. their semi-isolation from most of canada has allowed the preservation of mores and beliefs that others don't have.
  • "You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers, these are people of the land, the common clay of the new west. You know . . morons."
  • "Homer, when you bought that dummy, you said you weren't going to use it to fake your own death."
  • I can't imagine the shock at something like this. When my father unexpectedly died, the shock of it completely disrupted my sense of reality. I would go to sleep and dream that he was still in the house, then wake up and literally not be able to tell which was the dream and which was real. I believe that death, especially sudden death, challenges our understanding of the universe at a fundamental and visceral levell there really is a feeling that Death is somehow 'outside' the rules that govern our lives. Perhaps this is cultural, as we live (at least in my part of the Western hemisphere) in societies that seem to have trouble integrating death into our value system. Cognitive dissonance is bound to spring up when we are confronted by it. Therefore, I can imagine a person faced with the sudden death of a loved one and undoubtedly having serious 'reality' issues stemming from that already , recieving a phone call from said loved one and essentially being 'short circuited' by the experience. Hell yeah, I'd question what was really going on. You wouldn't think "why would a ghost need to use the phone?" you'd think "Dane is dead in that coffin over there, but he's also talking to me on the phone," two seemingly incontravertible facts running head long into each other are bound to cause some crazy ideas to spring up at the moment of impact.
  • Sorry for your loss, Nickdanger. Again, I can't begin to imagine life without my father, even though I only get to see him face-to-face a few weeks a year.
  • I just want to add a note that I wanted to put on my earlier comment, but forgot: There is little worse than losing a loved-one, & I would not for the least second make fun of someone in grief. It's a terrible burden of emotion. I've been thru it, will go thru it again, so will everyone: it's what makes us human. So I don't want to give the impression that I'm a heartless bastard.. (anymore than I already have). So my earlier fun-making remarks be taken in .. er.. tongue in cheek. /bow
  • fuyugare: "How to Disappear in America Without a Trace." granted, of course, you are in america. if you're overseas, sorry, can't help ya.
  • Wow, that's some link, SideDish. Truly paranoid stuff, with the satellites recording your thermal signature and the bouncing of the lasers off of your cabin window and the running and the screaming and the GLAYVIN!
  • "You should consider the resources of the individual or organization which you're hiding from as well as their degree of motivation for finding you."
  • Yes, but I haven't pissed off the Church of Scientology that much yet.
  • Yes, that is a superb link, SD. {banana} ... Wait, let me see that banana for a sec. *wipes all traces of skin, hair, blood, semen or other bodily fluids from banana* Oh fuck, I've screwed this up already.
  • middleclasstool it was a while back, but thanks.
  • Fuyugare -- I'm never eating a banana again. Thanks
  • That guy totally could've vanished and become a Yakuza assassin. But that's just me.
  • "He said, 'I've got a new name. I haven't decided what it's going to be.' "Tom Sawyer" might not be a bad choice.
