Curious George: Audioscrobbler Would anymonkey be interested in joining a MoFi Audioscrobbler group?

"Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations." I think this would be a nice way to gauge the listen habits of participating members and hopefully learn about some new music. Like the Mofi CD Swap, but more immediate.

  • Done and done! Great idea!
  • Curious George: Sub-George Have you guys seen this? (I am posting this here because it didn't seem like it deserved a FPP.) Its from back in March but I haven't seen any mention of it here or at MeFi. Too funny to go uncommented on. If this is old news, please ignore/delete/whatever.
  • Great idea! Wonderful for luring lurkers out of their corners. (ahem)
  • I dunno, as parody it is pretty good, I guess, but MeFi at its best is far more intelligent, and at its worst many (and I mean many) times more childish, and there isn't much middle ground. Plus these days it is all political flameouts all the time over there (why I stopped reading). I might lurk there again after this horrible election season is over.
  • Arg, I was just about to do a big FPP on audioscrobbler. I've been using it and definitely love the idea of it (collab filtering based purely on play times), and even though it's db is sketchy at best I think it's going to be very cool once it stabilises itself and gets a few more users. And this is fucking awesome. I've spent far too many hours wasting time away expanding artist nodes and just following it to see how different artists are getting interrelated by the users.
  • hee hee, oh yeah, Yeah, I wanna join too!
  • Sure. I doubt that I'll have a lot of songs in either top 50 on the MoFi page, but I've wanted to play with AudioScrobbler for while now.
  • Cool. I'm in.
  • I signed up, but after installing the plugin I found out it doesn't count the stuff I listen to on the iPod. I almost never listen to music while sitting at my computer, so that sucks.
  • Orbital! Yeeeah! No one likes 'Satan'? Mmmhh... Mmmhhh.. even with their FAQ's privacy provisions, I'm alittle worried about some other third-party to know everything that I hear. Hey, that monkey on the picture... I never thought a simian could be described to loook 'dead serious', but boy, that one is. Cheer up, little guy!
  • And... does it work with streaming radio stations? That's what I mainly use iTunes for nowadays.
  • Well, I've been looking for an excuse...
  • Tinfoil i REALLY want that Feist album and there's no US release. Don't suppose you could dropload or mail me a few tracks?
  • Looks neat. I'm in.
  • So this doesn't seem to be working for me. Did I break the intarweb again?
  • Yeah! 15 down, 1776 users to go! While I don't claim to be a master 'scrobbler (ian would say seems much more masterful than me), I will try to answer a few of the questions posted. flagpole: It doesn't seem to work with streaming radio. That being said, you should check out Last.FM which streams users Audioscrobbler content. oh, and the monkey picture is my impersonation of Tracy's "don't go there" face. You like? Forks: The Feist album looks set to be released on October 5. In the meantime, check your email. Also, did you install the Audioscrobbler plugin? Your userpage isn't listing one. cabingirl It only seems to work with files physically on your computer, so I guess iPod listening doesn't count. I hope this doesn't discorage you from participating.
  • Tinfoil - the parody (much appreciated) actually was noticed on metafilter, spawning a metathread. There had also been a previous parody, which spawned this epic cult thread. But no link is a doublepost that brings amusement again : )
  • Of course - it was decided (by the Powers that Be or someone) that mefi posts aren't double when here - feel free to FPP it.
  • Sorry 99.9% of what I listen to is WOXY so if it doesn't count that, then there's no point in me downloading it.
  • I wasn't expecting them to have a Foobar plugin, but whatta ya know!! I'm in!
  • the .dll file is in my itunes plugin file. My firewall is allowing it to run. What am I doing wrong? Anybody wanna go step by step with me? My music listening habits are IMPORTANT, people. the world must know...
  • To qual/quant-ify further: NOTHING has happened. Should I see something or get a message or something? Nothing occurs differently and I can't seem to see how to get this thing started.
  • Are you behind an HTTP proxy? My school's proxy (a Microsoft 'solution') doesn't play nice with the Foo2k plugin, even after I enter the details correctly.
  • forks: You need to click on the visualiser menu, and activate it from there. If its working right you should get a display like this on the visualiser page.
  • Nope. Not showing up when I go to the visualizer. I'm supposed to put the .dll in the plugin file, yes? No proxy that I'm aware of.
  • I'm supposed to put the .dll in the plugin file, yes? Yep. I don't know whats going on then.
  • i'm innnnn
  • Forks, are you using itunes for windows? I think the plugin for that doesn't work or something. Check the forums about it. Otherwise, this might be a good time to try winamp or foobar.
  • dude, I have over 25,000 songs loaded on itunes. There's no turning back now.
  • Quick random update: The group now has 22 members (yeah! thanks guys!) Our top five artists as of right now are: 1) Cat Power 2) Our Lady Peace 3) They Might Be Giants 4) Björk 5) Low Audioscrobbler is having a few hardware problems, so your "top 50" lists may not be updating quite as often as you like, but they seem to be on their way to fixing it. You can read more about it in the Audioscrobbler Forums. Forks still seems to be having a problem getting his plugin working. Can any of you monkeys offer advice?
