Overlooked DVDs - Interesting Masters of Cinema one pager on the best DVDs that didn't get their fair shake upon release. The sidebar has good stuff too.
  • Pretty esoteric list, but then I'm not a film student or "cinephile" according to their definition.
  • Artificial Eye, Tartan and the BFI are about the only people who release foreign films in Britain. They're a godsend, really. Good post, dobbs
  • Dobbs delivers yet again! great post.
  • Fantastic!!! New entry into my faves. Thanks, Dobbs.
  • Boudu Saved From Drowning is terrific. For those who don't know it, this was what Down and Out in Beverly Hills was cribbed from. Boudu is, of course, immeasurably superior. As it was directed by Jean Renoir (son of the painter), how could it not be? Further down the sidebar, Adrian Martin recommends Chances (Aussie soap) to fans of bizarre cinema. I second this (although I think the reference to Ruiz is overblown). It is extremely odd.
  • I don't see many zombies or lasers or kicking... Since I can't remember the last time I saw and enjoyed a film without one of those elements, I think I'll pass...
  • Executioners From Shaolin has kicking, and an actor named Li-Li Li (who played the daughter of the police inspector in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
  • Ooooh boya! Early Fleischer toons? Japanese silents? Thanks, dobbs! I'll be mining that page all the livelong winter!
