National ID Card Get Ready to register!... For your National ID card. This congressman is giving us fair warning. Canada's working on one... Oh, wait we already have one? I feel safer already.

Now shut up and be a good citizen.

  • (yawn) Wake me up when (a) this actually happens, and (b) it actually means the End Of Civilization. In other words: stop worrying.
  • Rise and shine, and read the last link...
  • that first link is bizzare. read his site and try to figure out what party he belongs to! Seems to be some sort of Libertarian or nutjob repub. Assuming he is a real congressman and it's not some kind of bizzare prank.
  • My point exactly---with drivers licenses, we've already had a "national" ID card for decades...and yet, to the utter consternation and confusion of "progressives", our nation still stands.
  • Bruce Schneier, author of "Applied Cryptography", and one of the great minds of our time has an excellent article explaining why he is opposed to a national ID card. A short quote from the article: "Proponents of national ID cards want us to assume all these problems, and the tens of billions of dollars such a system would cost -- for what? For the promise of being able to identify someone? What good would it have been to know the names of Timothy McVeigh, the Unabomber, or the DC snipers before they were arrested? Palestinian suicide bombers generally have no history of terrorism. The goal is here is to know someone's intentions, and their identity has very little to do with that. [...] There is more security in alert guards paying attention to subtle social cues than bored minimum-wage guards blindly checking IDs."
  • If you're innocent, you've nothing to hide. Now bend over...
  • Right. Because the potential for abuses is irrelevant. Right, David?
  • This is a huge mistake. There seems to be an awful lot of foot-shooting in legislation these days.
  • Don't you guys see that a system of national IDs will make it even easier to identify Brown People? We could even color-code the cards! Think how easy it would be to fight terrorism!
  • my Infernal Masters say that they're skipping this whole card thing in favor of the bar-code-on-the-back-of-the-neck in 2011.
  • Great link invoke.
