Tout Puissant Konono N These are musicians who left the bush to settle in the capital and who, in order to go on keep fulfilling their social role and make themselves heard by the ancestors (and, more concretely, by their fellow citizens) despite the high level of urban noise, have had to resort to DIY amplification of their instruments, and to megaphones (conical speakers). This makeshift electrification has provoked a radical mutation of their sound, as it has introduced distorsions which they have integrated to their style. (Quicktime Link included)
  • Suburbs are Killing Us has a few tracks up for download. I love these guys.
  • Tout puissant!
  • Wow, consider my mind blown. Not being a rock critic, I lack the necessary glands to produce the necessary superlatives to express my wonderment at the sound from the quicktime clip they play. That being said, I was less impressed by the demo .mp3 they include, but definitely a cool link.
  • Not being a rock critic Well, you know, it's not rock music.
  • Fantastic. Thanks for the link, I'm looking forward to the album now.
  • Forks, the only tracks I see at Suburbs are Killing Us are some covers of Konono No.1 songs by The Ex. Am I missing something?
  • No klausness, that's all I saw too. I liked it, but of course it's rock inspired by Konono No. 1, not the band itself.
  • Oh, I love this! Thank you. I am so going to track down some recordings. I wonder if I can get WOMAD to bring this crew out to New Zealand...
  • Ummm...kinda off topic, but this is making me extra crazy with crazy sauce...does anyone know where the hell I could download Paul Oakenfold's "Ready, Steady, Go" remix with Korean vocals, from the soundtrack of 'Collateral'? (inside Fever, club sequence) Two hours of Kaazaaing and Googling to no effect...
  • It's always fascinating to see how music mutates to fit into new environments. The idea of needing to make their sound heard is seen also in displaced animal populations, who die off if their voices cannot be heard. (o/t for moneyjane- There's a torrent for the 'Collateral' soundtrack posted on SuprNova.)
  • Wolof - yes, I realize it's not rock music. I was actually referring to the fact that I am not one to criticize rocks.
  • Fucking awesome, jane! I never get worked p about music anymore, but DAMN!
  • also, Oakenfold here.
  • Ok...pretend I sound like I've has about 23 beers to appreciate the delivery..."I really love you guys, man...no, I mean it...I FUCKIN' LOVE YOU GUYS!" Listening to Korean remix of Ready, Steady, Go as we speak...thanx Zedediah and mwhybark! Glad Tout Pouissant Konono 1 are rockin' the Monkey!
  • Just an update - one of their songs, Lufuala Ndonga, is up for free download.
