James Doohan received his star on the Hollywood Walk-Of-Fame
The actor, currently suffering from a host of ailments, including the onset of Alzheimer's disease, attended with his family, and Nichelle Nichols and George Takai, fellow co-stars of Star Trek.
This will be his last public appearance. (via Slashdot)

Doohan suffers from "...Alzheimer's disease and...Parkinson's disease, diabetes and lung fibrosis." Geez. Poor guy. I hope his remaining time is as comfortable as possible. He contributed greatly to the legend of Star Trek.
-
Wow, that's a tough bag of ailments, I wish him the best.
-
Any one of these afflictions must be daunting -- but to have them all at at once -- devastatiung! O ye dilithium crystals, beam him swift and safely to a better world.
-
On a more positive note, he's lost a shitload of weight. Take that, Atkins, you cock.
-
did you know stars actually purchase those things? the star on the walk of fame, i mean, not the diseases.
-
the star on the walk of fame, i mean, not the diseases. If they thought they could get a key movie role through viral infection, they'd be buying up diseases like fresh Kirspy Kremes!

Cirrhosis of the liver is MINE!!

Why is someone getting a star on the Walk of Fame considered to be news? If any star can purchase one, who decides who is actually a "star?" Can I buy one? Why is it that to be considered a "movie star" one has to be in a number of large roles in successful movies, but to be considered a "porn star" one can appear for a fleeing moment in the least successful pornographic movie ever made? What is the least successful pornographic movie ever made?

You have to be nominated, and fit this criteria: "Criteria for Star on the Walk of Fame 1. Professional achievement 2. Longevity of five years in the field of entertainment 3. Contributions to the community" They must be from the field of Live Theatre, TV, Film, Recording, or Radio. A committee reviews all of the nominations and chooses who can be sponsored. Sponsorship is $15,000 and the nominated person has to attend the event. There's a directory here

Bernockle: Why is someone getting a star on the Walk of Fame considered to be news? Normally, it's not - but James Doohan is a very recognizable figure from the childhood of many people my age and has become one of the few positive cultural icons (in the U.S. at least). There are very few people who have heard of "Scotty" and the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty" or some variation thereof is commonly heard in daily conversation of delinquents and CEO's. He has managed to make a career and garner worldwide recognition from his role, even though he had been typecast, and therefore unusable for any other role. This in itself is amazing, since so few actors are actually able to pull that off. Even more, he appears to have done so while maintaining a sense of grateful appreciation. He is, in my mind, the very definition of what we should consider a star.

even though he had been typecast, and therefore unusable for any other role. Not just because he was typecast though ... like most of the rest of the cast, he was not a talented actor. Not to dis him or the Star Trek cast though. I loved that show, and still watch the reruns when I can.

Normally, it may not be here at MoFi. But it often is elsewhere. When I hear that someone like Outkast gets one, I think that it is the Establishment saying, "Okay. We will recognize you. You are in." When I hear someone like James Doohan gets one, I think that it is the Establishment saying, "Though we might have been unsure before, time has proven that you belong here." But when someone like Warren Beatty gets one (and stars of that age and magnitude to continue to get them), I think to myself, "Under what criteria could Beatty possibly not already be there?"
-
Warren probably fucked someone's wife. Did I say probably? I meant almost certainly.
