  • I looked at a few of these before I realised they probably were going to give me nightmares. I'm such a girl. We had multiple invasions of plain old black ants in Santa Cruz. They'd come out of the power sockets in swarms. Ugh.

  • I don't mind ants. But whole hordes of them make my skin crawl. Just watch me become a trigger-happy pesticide spritzer when that happens.

  • I love ants!! ))))) When I was a kid I learned to catch fire ants with my bare hands. This trick gave me an edge over the other kids in the neighborhood when it came to dropping nasty things on other's back.
  • wonderful. ) i'm having middle-school/jr. high school memory flashes. our science class had a two story ant farm with a tube connecting the levels. as a class project we mapped the tunnels. thanks for the link.

  • freddythefish - i think that ant really IS robotic. i mean, i stumbled across it myself, and was fascinated by the ever-so-shiny head shot. it was mesmerizing. but i didn't look at the full-sized profile until i clicked your link... look at the dorsal thorax, near the middle of the carapace, just in front of the spine. see that little hole? the hole with the sort of knurled edges? i recognize that shape - that's where the friggin' gas cap goes! this ant must be powered by internal combustion! holy crap! (monkeyfilter: holy crap! robotic ants!)

  • Ants aren't cute. They're damn scary. I just watched some special on the Discovery channel about these Army Ants in Africa that are so brutal, they can attack a human. No joke.
  • Monkeyfilter: heh heh. i got to say "thorax". heh heh. I like ants. I am not a big fan of fire ants, although I do enjoy my friend Nobody's clever comment that they are 'salsa for the feet.' I like other kinds of ants and think they are pretty fascinating. I find that their appearance is quite alien but they sometimes have such human-like behavior (farming fungus, domesticating aphids, enslaving other ants, making war on other colonies).
