Ashcroft orders public libraries to destroy law books via BoingBoing
  • WHAT. THE. FUCK. AMERICA?
  • Worst Attorney General ever!
  • How could he possibly think this was something he should be able to do?
  • hooray JoeChip! (also BB notes the order to rescind)
  • The topics addressed in the named documents include information on how citizens can retrieve items that may have been confiscated by the government during an investigation. The documents to be removed and destroyed include: Civil and Criminal Forfeiture Procedure; Select Criminal Forfeiture Forms; Select Federal Asset Forfeiture Statutes; Asset forfeiture and money laundering resource directory; and Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2000 (CAFRA). Gee, I wonder why they'd want to do that? And for the record, shit like this is why liberals wax Orwellian about the current administration. Call me tinfoil-hatted if you must. I'll wear that red letter proudly.
  • Golly gee fuckin' whiz I am shocked. Yes, SHOCKED I am that this fine, upstanding gentleman could have made such a poor decision. Surely the clarity and brilliance of his appointment should not be impugned, but rather - let us consider that some intern perhaps - a Democrat, maybe? - has forged this heinous order without Mr. Asscroft's knowledge. Yes, surely that is what has happened to make such an undeserved black mark on the face of our great, honorable Attorney General - yea verily like a huge streak of bestial shit across his trembling upper lip, covering crooked, sharpened blood-stained teeth. Oh, and the library journal article.
  • GPO Superintendent of Documents Judith Russell said the documents were training manuals and that her order to have them pulled was a routine request. That makes me wonder how often this kind of thing has to happen for it to be a "routine request". On another note, this has made me realize how much I don't go the library, and how I don't take advantage of the freedom of information act. Time to get a library card! :o)
  • werd up minda25. I think all us monkeys should express outrage by FOIA'ing everything possible. err speaking of, can somebody link to the documents in question? Pweeeze?
  • Note to Ashcroft: In the words of comedian Bill Stine- "Here’s a good rule of thumb: If Hitler tried it—maybe go the other way."
  • Maybe yhey're just trying to keep people so scared, jittery and startled, with terror attack threats and government actions bordering on the kafkian, so when aliens land, nobody will notice, no one will be scared. /goes out for coffee, plans to stuff cotton in ears and tuck under bedsheets at night
  • Civil & Criminal Forfeiture Procedure doj; PDF CAFRA There's a couple for you, pete.
  • With the goal of preventing people from becoming gay, the government has announced that they are recalling all albums by the Pet Shop Boys.
  • I have always said - when they start burning books, you know you're in trouble. Not to be alarmist, as they did rescind the order almost immediately, but I'm just sayin'.
  • I wonder at the mentality of book-burners. I'm amazed they hold high public office at all / so easily. Shouldn't be of course. altogether now: Worst.Administration.Ever
  • oh and thanks minda25 for the links! Maybe they should go straight to the memoryhole.org just in case . . .
  • mecurious - check this out - notice anything familiar? :)
