The Wackier World of Japanese Ice Cream So y'all already know about wasabi ice cream, but why be satisfied with horseradish when you can have horseflesh? Make mine a double cone!
  • Not as nauseating as the first one, but then again it didn't have Ox Tongue flavor in it.
  • I would have to be in really desperate straits before I'd consider eating horsemeat. Let's get this out into the open -- horse is a taboo food to me.
  • Raw Horse Flesh ice cream (on the next FEAR FACTOR!). *blech*
  • beeswacky: open your culinary horizons! Horsemeat is fairly common in Europe. It tastes similar to mutton to me. Belgian supermarkets carry smoked horsemeat, which is a bit like ham. It's good, honestly! I visited Kumamoto in Japan last year, and made a point of trying the local speciality - basashi or raw horsemeat. It was actually rather nice. I'm not sure that I want it in my ice cream, however. For a really challenging foodstuff, try Chinese hundred-day eggs: brown jelly around a hard green yolk. It takes a leap of faith to put some in your mouth. I like them.
  • ThreeDayMonk, I know the French eat it. I have met it in the meat-market. (It woz in such encounters I learned to relish the non-Frenchness of me.) Now wot I'd really like is some June bug ice cream!
  • re: horsemeat, my ex and i were in a tiny town in italy years ago. he always enjoyed just pointing to some unknown dish on an untranslated menu and taking his chances. this time the waiter looked disturbed, jotted down our order and trotted to the kitchen. then both the waiter and cook peered out at us and had an animated conversation. the cook finally came out and in broken english said, "horsemeat." guess they wanted to warn we squeamish yanks. we figured, when in rome (or, more specifically, when in a small italian village...) and went for it. it's tough. real tough. but the gravy was tasty!
  • potato liquor ice cream? red wine ice cream? stout ice cream? why is the western world so far behind when it comes to adding alcohol to our ice cream? come on folks, get with the program - i wanna try some o' this! (but not the goat ice cream. i mean, goat milk, ok. but chunks of goat? frogs says "no thank you".)
  • I love the Japanese ice cream I've had, but I would never eat the meat ones. Ick. I'm dying to try red wine and cactus flavors. And I'm very curious about the wazabi! Can you buy the wacky flavors outside of Japan? I've only ever seen green tea and adzuki bean flavors.
  • wazabi = wasabi. ahem.
  • Stout ice cream sounds good to me. Stoat, not so good.
