Curious George - I just enjoyed a great link by homunculus and I am very happy that Gyan (the music man) and languagehat are here to share their perspectives and fun links with us. I seem to remember seeing other MeFites posting here. How many other Metafilter members eventually signed up here when we were remarked upon over at that other site? Are there any others willing to "come out"?

If this is old ground then here is a rather interesting (if obvious) way of reading MetaFilter's history. (Start from the bottom up, as they say.) I found it especially entertaining reading during those times that Matt got pissed off. Kudos to Mr. Haughey for keeping his pecker up.

  • Yeah, I saw that when you got nailed. Double posts are over/underrated in my opinion. So what? How many times is a thing like that gonna get posted twice unless somebody bookmarks it and posts it again by mistake? Your only fault is being to enthusiastic and/or lazy. And given your fun none of us will complain. :-)

I am an old, bitter man. Have fun with it. Other useful doublepost euphemisms: "Mofi Encore" or "Best of Mofi" or "I Love the Mofi '03"...

  • Sorry, wendell. I do remember you too. It seems we got the best of MeFi here. And it seems the MeFi user search function is prettry much useless. I searched for "Miguel" and it came up empty...
  • Try "Miguel" in the right-hand box, and alter Search from "thread" to "user", then, Jerry.
  • Sorry, the user search function does nothing except scrape information from your computer (credit card numbers, incriminating filenames). How else do you think Matt can afford to run the site? But seriously, Miguel appears to be one of the MeFites who prefer to spend his lighthearted websurfing hours at 9622.net, the site named after a legendary MeFi thread, where he is currently trying to start new Presidential scandals (damm furriner).

  • Our Fez is another MeFite. Wendell was an early bi-url contributer here, starting from about the time of the MeFi LA meetup where Mofites were invited. The space kitty bits post will give you a clearer understanding of our distinguished history.

  • This fine playground which tracicle (and no doubt a few others) built for us was originally formed because MeFi wasn't open to new members. monkeyfilter=the sincerest form of flattery. And MeFi/MoFi members have been consistently generous, kind, and helpful to monkeydom. Because MoFi/MeFi languagehat mentioned this place on his blog in the fall of '03, I came to lurk a bit, noted the tone, and decided to try it. I suspect many monkeys came here becasue of a mention somewhere on a MoFi/MeFi blog. So I am all languagehat's fault. Blame him. Or of course wendell.

  • dxlifer - if the language is html, sometimes I speak it and sometimes I don't. I once tried to post about 6 links in a comment. The first couple worked, but the rest didn't, even though I was sure that I'd done exactly the same thing. And, I can copy and paste with the best of 'em (sometimes.) I blame it on age and fondess for email, where I don't have to deal with poiny parentheses. And, Wendell, you're my hero!

  • I've got dual citizenship, too. Both communities are enjoyable in their own way. MoFi is a bit more relaxed and whimsical, while MeFi is more formal and politically-oriented. Good stuff. And yes, my userid is the same at both places.
  • I don't want to give Jerry Garcia the shits, but considering maybe half our members are also Mefites, this seems like a bit of a weak post. Could we possibly do something besides ASL for a week or two? I don't especially mind, but too much of this kind of thing starts to read like insecurity.

  • I actually found Monkeyfilter after reading yet another bitchy exchange about it on the Mothership. I have been a Meta member for years but loathe posting either comments or (god forbid) links because, frankly, I'm far to fragile emotionally. Plus, after I moved once, my computer reset and I couldn't remember my password and I stopped reading the site for about 1.5 years. Which is, I guess, to say: hey, I'm a Meta member too but far too timid to be at all notorious.

  • Monkeyfilter "quonsar" was an imposter. That's why the REAL Metafilter quonsar posts here as quonset_the_hut. We also have two Miguel Cardosos here, one with a space between the Miguel and the Cardoso and one without. I think "space" is the real one.

  • I joined the monkeys (recently) after joining Metafilter because people here seem more genuine and just plain nicer, and the content is just as good. I avoided posting much at Metafilter because humiliation and vitriolic argument aren't my gig. Perhaps I will start posting more here...

Also, as goetter and beeswacky eerily accurately and quite charmingly remember, two filles - the calm one with Good Character standing at the state bar, and the other one, with all the tattoos and black eyeliner that wishes it was still age-appropriate to act like a goth chick because being melodramatic is fun.

  • dang quonsar - did tracicle fix the user for ya, or is this imposter coming up again? user page says "i've also posted here as quonset_the_hut"... which says to me either (a) you're you, with your preferred name again, or (b) tracicle's gotta get out the whuppin' stick and use it on an uppity imposter again. oh and (after foolishly squandering my chance to join mefi with the 14k crowd, before access shut off again) i finally joined, after finding my way here first. so i'm a dual-filterian. tend to post here more than there, probably 'cause it's easier to make an impression here... less people trying to talk at once, see? but i do like askmefi. that's good to have around.

  • I have memberships on both, but mostly lurk unless I'm feeling chatty and thick-skinned. AskMeFi is the best part of MeFi right now.
