The Daily Show wins an award for news programming? this seems pretty funny to me. and sort of sad that a fake news show gives me better news than the real news shows.

the daily show beat out several other news programs to take the award. (and i'm still surprised nobody else posted this here yet.) i find that stewart is a less biased host than many on the news today, regularly features people from conservative and liberal camps, and is a pretty damn good interviewer, spending more time asking about things people care about and less time grinding an axe. he's also very good at getting his (mostly liberal) audience to respond politely to conservative guests. so why can't i find that in a real news show?

  • i loved their Indecision 2000. That was awesome. [on flag burning] Guest:"Some people, I feel, are hiding behind the first amendment." John Stewart:"Perhaps they're getting shot at by people hiding behind the second amendment."
  • This is great and it makes total sense to me. I am more likely to trust what I hear on the Daily Show than any other "news" program--whether or not I agree with it. It makes me feel all warm and smooshy that Jon Stewart is getting the credit and recognition he deserves. I think under his leadership the Daily Show is a vital part of our society. [/drooling rant about how much I love Jon Stewart]
  • sort of like the Onion is better at nailing the reality of a situation* better than the "real" newspapers. *This article has been modifed from the Onion's original print version. All the hyperlinks were apparently added by the site host.

  • He always says i's fake news, but it's not truly fake. It's not made up news like many SNL Weekend Update bits. The actual news items are news, just delivered with a satirical and irreverent bent. As the FPP pointed out, it is somewhat sad that the only source of balanced reporting comes from a comedy show. Perhaps, in this administration and state of affairs, it works because if we don't laugh we just may have to cry.
  • It's an excellent show, and even though it's TV critics award and not like a Peabody or something, it's the saddest proof yet that other news channels are not getting it. Sucking up to Bushies and their agenda for years is worse than bad. They're not asking hard questions but even more to the point they're not questioning anything. (This is limited to TV news as the scope of the thread, right?) A well-informed electorate is essential to democracy (or a representative republic) succeeding. TV news is failing in the worst way - they're just not trying. I'm waiting for phrases like "weak as a white house press corp" to show up in pop culture references. copies, pastes, heads over to the blue. . .
  • I do enjoy Jon Stewart a lot, most of the time. What I'd like to know, then, is whether anyone knows where to get a bittorrent or similar of his latest shows for those of us without tvs.
  • Does anybody read with comprehension anymore? At the 20th annual Television Critics Association awards show Saturday night, members gathered to honor their choices for the best of the 2003-2004 season.. . . . Only television critics, for instance, would have conferred this year's prize for outstanding news and information programming to Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" — vaulting it over rivals like PBS' "Frontline" and ABC's "Nightline." Emmy nominations are out (and the Daily Show, but the awards ceremony isn't until Sept. 21st. Here are the Emmys the Daily Show is nominated for. The Emmys aren't even handed out until Sept. 21st.
  • You know, there is nothing sadder than somebody making a rant on reading comprehension, in which the ranter failed to read with comprehension. < my apologies >
  • Does anybody read with comprehension anymore? Huh? Apparently, not all of us. Who said anything about Emmy's (until you did, that is)?
  • D'oh! Apology accepted. OT: Preview is different here, eh ;)
  • And to think, I was disappointed back when Jon Stewart replaced Craig Kilborn. The show was funny then, but has become a true cultural icon today. It's the only show I watch with any sort of regularity. And it's become my primary news source, which really says something about the state of the news media today.
  • exppii: I have been getting my daily show bittorrents from suprnova.org since about last fall. Sadly, no one has posted any for about the last month. Even sadder, I don't have a tv and am to cheap to get even basic cable...
  • "Messopotamia."
  • What I think is sad is that in order to take a liberal or leftist stance on the news The Daily Show has to be a parody. It is almost as if the only way that the networks will allow some sort of balance to their right-of-center nightly news is in this format. I don't think that it should be discounted as relevant because it is parody. Parody has a long history of being used to criticize the actions of those in power when more direct methods have been suppressed. Consider it just for a second… is there any more liberal broadcast on the networks than The Daily Show?
  • CBS
  • CBS The same CBS that wouldn't show moveon.org ads during the Super Bowl? mmmmmmmkay. Conservatives own today's media. They just never admit it.
  • That's pretty funny, blogRot.
  • No, I think he's referring to the CBS that wouldn't show the Reagan miniseries.
  • Over on MetaFilter, someone posted a link to Jon Stewart's reaction to 9/11. There's a transcript and RealPlayer streaming of it. It had me crying like a baby. I respect him even more now.
  • you know, after posting both here and there, i've gotta say - for you monkeys without access to the blue - we've got a much better "more inside" here. to do it there, i think you've gotta post more inside at the end of the link, then actually immediately post your more as the first comment. it's kind of backwards, methinks. although the blue has a spell checker and a link-inserter thingy. but we've got the more inside nailed! i really do think that the show deserves a news award. maybe it't because most of us are so hung up on our own personal issues - the only way to bridge the gap without ending up in a flamewar is to do it with humor. and as a few have pointed out, it's probably only because stewart makes EVERYONE fair game that he gets away with it - they take shots at anyone, and aren't afraid to call people out when they say or do something wrong. this video on talking points killed me. it's funny as hell, and it's also the best explanation i've ever seen as to how political pundits settle on a specific phrase when describing a candidate. here's hoping the daily show has a long and happy life - and that stewart doesn't end up taking sides and losing his edge like dennis miller did.
  • ambrosia wins. Honorary trophies for all.
  • Ambrosia, shawnj and wedge: "Courage."
  • George W. Bush -- Because He Says So Don't listen to the Filter, or the facts. Listen to the words.
  • I think it's really just what Stewart said to Koppel--that it IS the newsperson's role to call bullshit when he/she sees or hears it. Stewart keeps pointing out that news interviews tend to be "Let's see what the left thinks...okay, now what does the right think? Okay, that was an interesting discussion." Which of course is not a discussion at all. Stewart does a great job, imo, of actually focusing on issues and getting people to tell him (in interviews) what they think, then pointing out where that contradicts other things that person or his/her party may have said. Same with the satirical news bits--he's not just presenting the news, but presenting it with a critical eye to what the newsmakers are saying versus what they've said in the past and, more importantly, what is demonstrably true or untrue. Which is, imo, what the news SHOULD be doing.
  • Now that is funny. I completely forgot about his lame attempt for a signoff.
  • Man of the Year This guy would make a good Secretary of State.
  • They should have hired Jon Stewart to play himself. I like Robin Williams, but he just comes off in this trailer as Robin Williams playing Robin Williams (crazy fun comedian), not a dry witty satirical comedian.
  • I've seen a few clips of the Daily Show here in the UK, but all the whooping annoys me. Why all the whooping? Can you stop the whooping please? It's true about how satire often has the facts clearer than the news. Private Eye is an excellent example. Gallery of Private Eye covers. This one is my favourite - Howard was the then Home Secretary. (p.s. he never sued)
  • MonkeyFilter: Can you stop the whooping please?
  • Top Eye covers link, muteboy. I'm fond of this one myself.
  • Can't wait for part 2!
