Euro2004 goals animated in stunning 2D! Probably NSFW!!!!!111one

I won't apologize for the ridiculousness of this post. I have no regrets!

  • Can we close off membership yet?
  • Nicholas Negroponte, head of the MIT media lab, had in the past predicted that when computers became sufficiently powerful and ubiquitous, spectator sport could be transformed by using cameras to create a computer model of the game on the fly. Spectators could then watch a visualization of that model, instead of a direct feed from a camera. The idea was that viewers could watch the game from any viewpoint, (including any player's, or the ball's, for that matter) pick their own instant replays, etc. etc. I think Mr. Negroponte had something a little higher-res in mind, though. These little movies are... odd.
  • I like the silliness.
  • they're cute, in a weird little way.
  • Wonderful. I love this muchly.
  • I just thought this stuff was suitably bizarre. Thus, interesting on some level. I actually laughed at a few, like where Zidane puts it right into the corner off a free kick, and the keeper just sort of twitches a bit, and doesn't even try to stop the ball. And Kimberly, you get a free high five. Don't get too used to it, though, as my high fives are rare and special! (Sorry about the NSFW jab, Kim, but it was out of love, you know that.) musingmelpomene-- I swear to God, I'll demand the creation of a MonkeyTalk specifically to make a thread about you.
  • It hurt, but it was a good kind of hurt. A tingly, special hurt.
  • monkeyfilter: just sort of twitches a bit
  • Spectators could then watch a visualization of that model, instead of a direct feed from a camera. It's getting here soon, it seems, as you can see on the demos from the people at Movia! (look under Services/Universal Capture). True virtual cameras... that's gonna be some exciting soccer footage, let me tell you. Maybe we'll get a sneak peek of it at the Olympics.
  • Monkeyfilter: a tingly, special, good kind of hurt.
  • Not to derail, but why is there no MonkeyTalk? OK, screw it, I'm derailing, but I am curious about it.
  • middleclasstool: go here for the discussion.
  • BEST POST EVER
  • Makes me wanna go play Fifa 2001. One more round of iSketch first, tho..
  • that's gonna be some exciting soccer footage, let me tell you. First time for everything... OH SNAP!
  • GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!!!!
  • Lovely! Though Mr Sacred and Profane ... if the Zidane free-kick you mention is the one I'm thinking off ... the goalie just twitched a bit in real-life too ... Bah! Negroponte's vision available here
  • I'm proud of all of you for making this a delicious thread. Thank you one and all. (And I totally thought I had coined the term MonkeyTalk just recently, but it seems like I'm just another cog in the collective genius of the Monkeyfilter machine.) scartol: FIFA 2002 is a lot of fun as well, with a better passing system. I've yet to play any of the new incarnations.
