Marlon Brando 'nearly destitute' according to a recent biography.
  • So is "a bum" finally what he is now? Let's be honest.
  • that was depressing. I should go pay him a visit to try and cheer him up. Poor guy. How many Tiny one bedroom bungalo's can be left on Mulholland?
  • Not my night??!
  • I guess we are going to have to count on this actor to keep his legacy of acting excellence alive.
  • yuh know, I just saw 'Guys and Dolls' this weekend. He lit that movie up. God, he was a sexy bastard. I wanted to save his soul, any time, anywhere, day or night.* His life offscreen has been kinda fucked up tho. Like all the good ones, IMHO. *a half-assed quote
  • "Destitute" is such a relative term. I wonder how many destitute people can pick up a six or seven figure check anytime they agree to be in someone's movie.
  • "Destitute" for a guy like Brand means he's down to the offshore money - and this new "biography" is dedicated to the IRS.
  • "o"
  • Hey, bernockle and i feel unusual, the guy is 80 years old and weighs...well, a lot. He spent an incredible amount of money trying to keep his son out of prison, a lot on that island of his, a whole lot on therapy and a ton on drugs. BFD. He's an exceptional man. He may not have his shit together to do another movie....jeesus christ, the guy is eighty, can't we finally forgive him for refusing that Oscar and exposing that Native chick to humiliation? What IS it about him that makes the snarks circle? Is it because he didn't die, like James Dean? (or for that matter, Howard Dean) His role as Kurtz was disappointing, I admit, but I really enjoyed him in 'Don Juan DiMarco' Why is it that so many of us judge him by his personal life, where we wouldn't give a shit about Bogie's past, or Gable's, or...does anyone even give a shit about Meryl Streep and her Alar overreaction? Does that make her less of an actress? And Pete Rose. WTF is up with that? I'm just sayin'.
  • He famously refused his Oscar for 'The Godfather' in protest at the government treatment of native Americans. It's just a stupid, pointless gesture. WTF does his portrayal of a dapper Don in a critically-acclaimed movie have to do with "government treatment of native Americans?"
  • davidmsc I think he was trying to reach the largest audience he could. And if you think about it, he did that. All these years later, people who weren't even alive then have strong opinions about it. the opinions are mostly negative, but still.
  • Did I make it clear? Being Don Corleone and getting the attention of the academy was the best way he could broadcast his pet cause. A worthy cause, and it showed the bloated, officious, small-minded snobbery of the Holywood elite when they booed her. I'm thinkin' no way would that happen today.
  • PatB said: He spent an incredible amount of money trying to keep his son out of prison, a lot on that island of his, a whole lot on therapy and a ton on drugs. I would put forward the hypothesis that anyone who can afford an island, therapy, and a ton of drugs in a country that doesn't have the greatest healthcare system is far from true destitution. I'm a Brando fan, to be honest, more for his attitude of mindfucking Hollywood status quos than anything else. I feel sympathy for his current situation health-wise, family-wise. But I don't despair for his financial future by any means. The fact is, he is still considered A-list no matter how hard he is to work with, and his paychecks for any appearances - no matter how obese, silent, or unattractive he may be - will always be fat. No pun intended. Apologies in advance if you're saying he's destitute in a non-financial manner.
  • cephalopod he doesn't have an island anymore. His son was found guilty. Yeah, he's A-List, but he's Eighty! How long does he have to be a Hollywood whore before he gets to retire on social security like everyone else? Maybe, just maybe, at eighty he simply isn't capable of doing an A-List appearance. Even Ronald Reagan wasn't expected to perform at that age. Will he ever be allowed to retire?
  • Pete Rose was an American icon in the most iconic of American sports. He will never be forgiven by a large number of baseball fans (after all, they still argue about the Black Sox, fer pete's sake). It was the same as finding out the Pope has been peeing in the holy water for years.
  • Well yeah, but, peeing or not, the dude set some serious records. So he deserves his space in the hall of fame.
  • The 'native american chick' wasn't even a native american chick.
  • Thank god, Nostril i'd hate it if we spurned and mocked an actual first citizen.
  • Will he ever be allowed to retire? What? Heavens, he doesn't have to work if he doesn't want to. He can drop completely out of sight if he wants to - Johnny Carson did.
  • PatB -- I have always enjoyed Brando. I am not circling him. I am not happy he is having problems. I do not wish he was dead. I simply do not like the idea of using terms that are associated with the truly poor to describe someone who has led a relative life of wealth.
  • werd, bernockle.
  • Apologies, bernockle. I woke up this morning with a splitting headache and a vague memory of going on some sort of Brando rant. I looked and, yup, there it was. I don't know WHAT I was thinking because I agree with you. Beer + keyboard= doh! *smacks forehead, winces* why is this keyboard fo fucking LOUD? Where the hell is that ice pack?
  • are you an assassin?
  • Uh oh...looks like we all spoke too soon -- reports surfacing that Brando has passed away.
  • Holy shit, you're right.
