Are you a Coffee Geek? Do you consider coffee geeks to be snobs or connoisseurs? Have a favorite bean? Favorite roast? Winetasters have nothing on coffee cuppers. Want to roast your own green coffee beans? You need nothing more than an old air popper (popcorn) - but make sure you use the right type. Or use another method. More than you ever wanted to know???
  • so i have a bag of green coffee beans in my cupboard, right above the spot i keep my insanely expensive coffeepot. i've been meaning to roast them for a while, had thought of the old oven method, and suddenly here's this post. from what i've heard, word-of-mouth from the guy i obtrained the beans from, this is the way to go for anyone who wants to take their coffee seriously. from what i've read, up until about WWII roasting your own beans at home was a common thing, and the advent of the now-ubiquitous instant stuff was part of the downfall of coffee culture in america, until someone here realized that it tasted like crap and folger's grounds from a can weren't much better. god i love coffee. ok maybe the coffeepot isn't insanely expensive to all of y'all, but it was to me - and worth every damn penny.
  • Coffee, tea, and three spoonfulls of honey&sugar&cinnamon. All mixed together in a giant mug. That's the way to start the day. You don't need anymore after that first mug, by cracky. So not so much a coffee geek as a caffeine afficianado
  • wow, thanks mecurious. i just found the perfect and cheap new coffee pot from your link that i'm sure i can pick up today. and i really like your name... metoo.
  • Don't roast my own beans at the moment. I used to buy my coffee (they were just down the road) from these guys. But for the moment I don't. Wrong country and all. I have one of these for making coffee. And my favourite beans would be.... hmmmm, Ok , I'll name three. Zimbabe, Kenya AA and Tanzanian Peaberry. Preferred roast is dark; espresso style or French.
  • How about some ubergeek modifications that you can make to your air popper/roaster? http://www.homeroaster.com/geekmod.html http://members.cox.net/felixdial/popper.mods.shtml
  • I like a French Press. Often cheaper than a good drip machine, and certainly easier to use - just add hot water. And they make a damn strong cup of coffee. Yum.
  • Coffee is a hell of a drug. I use a simple but extremely effective Clubline KB 741 (reviewed here at Coffee Geek) in the city, and a cheap Black-and-Decker Cup-At-a-Time DCM7 in the country. Never thought of roasting my own, but I do grind by hand at times. Part of my winter wakeup ritual.
  • All hail, Melitta, inventress of the coffee filter!
