A Global Power Shift in the Making.
"Asia is rising fast, with its growing economic power translating into political and military strength. The West must adapt -- or be left behind."
A good article, but being typically human-centric it doesn't say what all this means for Asia's monkeys.

Hold on, I'm still working on your humanicide post. *goes and buys Howard Berg's book*
-
Too late. The West already conceeded when we collectively decided we prefer our shiny trinkets to be made by the cheap labour pools of fascist states. China alreay 0wns the US.
-
Just as we did in Japan in the 1940-50s. post WWII. Our buying all those shoddy celluloid toys gave Japan a leg up, and now they're a contender. And, they buy stuff from us. I think it would be great if China developed the same way. Their citizens are people, just like us, and they deserve to have a prosperous lives. And, in spite of its faults, China is being pushed into the world marketplace, which doesn't like human rights violations. I do think they'll change, however slowly. And, if that challenges Western cultures, is that bad? We've rested on our laurels for a long time. Maybe a challenge is what we need. Or, have we lost our ability to innovate? If we have, well, let the more innovative country win.

Everything shifts like this. Asia was powerful before, and will be powerful again - in terms of its history, China has been top nation (both in its region and to the supplicant European traders) for much longer than it was economically subject to Western powers. Europe had its brief time as king of the world, the US is having its heyday, but nothing lasts. Nothing gives world politics perspective like thinking in centuries and millenia.

I, somehow, expect both of you, path and jb, to be right.
-
I say somehow because I'm still not so sure if it's something good or bad that China rises to capitalist superpower again, but nevertheless I'm expectant.
