• Insufferable asswipes, at that. That being said... a more appropriate place to discuss this might be tracicle's blog, perhaps with a link to that discussion posted to the thread in question. I'm not certain I like seeing "You're a troll!" "No, you're a troll!" callouts as FPPs in the Lavender.
• Sullivan - most of your links point to comments by others complaining about his insult. Later in the thread, he apologized. I think he's young and gets emotional when people he admires are criticized. Maybe I'm just naive.

If we are going to nanny members than let's nanny the whole group. If not than let's flame away like Metafilter. I don't even read most of f8x's post now, let alone comment on them. I think they read like the Onion. So I am not concerned. What does lead me to believe he is a troll is he uses the least credible links and when people on the otherside of the debate shoot disprove his points he never acknowledges that he's wrong. Now I have disagreed with people that didn't change my views, but I know that I got smoked in a debate. That's life.

He's passionate, and I believe that he fully believes what he's writing. He gets overheated sometimes. Not hard to understand, given that most of us here are liberals, and further given that everytime f8x says something unpopular, five to ten monkeys pile on him. Witness the thread of his last FPP. There are liberal shit-stirrers here too, and they're considered good members because they make honest-to-God good contributions to the front page and threads (not to mention the fact that hilarity often ensues). F8x has (1) unpopular views and (2) the occasional tendency to get worked up in the political threads. This = troll?
• I believe f8x likes to stir the pot now and then (he's even admitted to it), and maybe enjoys being "one against many" in the political threads...and I've even called him a troll on one occasion. But as trolls go, he's relatively harmless, and more often than not he presents his case politely (albeit passionately) and with a minimum of personal attacks. So what should we do about it? Nothing. f8x is f8x, and he's part of the clan. If we can't handle his conservativeness (whether it's real or made-up) then we have a bigger problem. Just don't take the bait when he gets political, and call him out when he gets personal or offensive. We don't need to burden trac with being the site cop (or our mommy).

• I have trolled, and I have had a fine ol' time of it. Being a troll myself, I think I'm safe in pontificating on the topic. By my scrupulous standards, f8x isn't a troll. f8x loses his temper when one of our more insouciant members says "I want to rape and kill the dead President" (free translation). That's not a troll. f8x decides not to sit on his hands when the Liberalliest Liberal That Ever Liberaled [© Kimberly] (which could be any one of 1200 of y'all, sometimes, it seems) makes an "all of us think this" type of post. That's not a troll, either. A true troll attempts to provoke a shitstorm for the sake of the shitstorm itself. The time that I wrote a letter to my company's newsletter, decrying my fellow ill-groomed code monkeys and promoting a formal business-style dress code, resulting in a three-week avalanche of angry denunciations... that was a troll.

• Dear Dizzy - I've been up-front about my admiration for your style and wit several times in this forum. Your presence here is what got me hooked on MoFi in the first place. And, I have been called names here a couple of times, but somehow I didn't take it personally. (That did surprise me, because I think I might have acted differently IRL, though I'm not sure whether I would have laughed or cried.) That said, while Daniel and squidranch may have been playing rough in that infamous trainwreck, no one was blameless. Actually, they seemed much gentler than what I've seen on the blue, which is the only other community site I read. I saw several stunned reactions from others who, like me, had read it the day after it went down. And, the fact that there was no gossip about what happened (only comments about how surprising it was) convinced me that no one had any idea of how to make it all better. Not to mention that to tell someone whom most (probably all) of us really like/love that maybe he had some ownership of the problem, and who seemed to be in exteme pain, would just increase that pain. Dear, sweet Dizzy, maybe it's time to let this go - maybe even learn from it. So, now I'll stare at this for a couple of hours, deciding whether to post it or not. Will it make it better or worse? Will it cause someone I do admire to think I'm a traitor? Should I say, "Yes, you were 100% right!", when that would be a lie? Do I just delete this and let the silence gather, which would maybe be more hurtful? If Dizzy abandons our community, is it my fault for saying what I believe? This is an obstacle course.

• why does this have to be a contest of some kind? why is it necessary that, just because one monkey called another 'out' now one or the other has to make a concession of some kind. that seems to be what is keeping this thread going: a need for vindication. why? are we not all equals or is there really a need for some sort of status system to be established here? then cliques will develop to contest with other cliques and there shall be more contest within the cliques as to has the alpha role. then, within the anonymity of the web, truths and slanders can be freely woven and become the means to denigrate and hurt others. or - is there really a competition for rank as most intelligent, most intellectual, most mature, most profane, who is right or wrong, etc.? is this all a techno-pissing contest? i'm just a monkey. i came here to have a good time and learn in the process. i want to share my enjoyment with my other monkeys. i thought that's what we were doing. now all of a sudden there seems to be some kind of nasty ranking game going on and some monkeys are not being much fun to be around. they certainly don't play. they don't educate and they give me bad feelings sometimes. some even disappear! *i don't like this, she mumbles. /shuffles sadly out of the room.
