Testing, testing, etc. There's a test metaphilter mofi up. Please go ahead and try it out, let me know what bugs you find, what you think of the colour scheme, and so on.

As far as I'm aware, the features are the same as Metafilter: trackback; sidebar with new posts/comments since last login; general metafilter-like prettiness; an rss feed in case we're prolific enough to need one; and best of all, no admin go-between for posts. I'll be adding a tech/bug-related category to the topics as I have on the original mofi rather than make a separate MeTa-type page.

  • Yay! This is much better!! Very exciting. The white hurts my eyes though--maybe something a little less bright? And I'll just throw this out there--what do we think about not having blue on this page at all? Thanks for setting this up tracicle!
  • And also, www.monkeyfilter.com is available. I'd be happy to register it if we like that idea.
  • www.MonkeyFilter.com is a must-have. Since I've never logged into Mefi, the posting features are new to me. I guess we can work out bugs (and ponies) as we go?
  • Here's a bug: I posted something new to the front page, but it only shows up in archives.
  • It's not actually mefi blue, but at the same time I was sort of thinking of doing the colour scheme as the inverse of metafilter. But yes, I will make the white something easier on the eye. I also noticed that the profile links aren't updated, so we'll work on that and the archive thing (that is a weird one) today.
  • All the above issues are fixed, in case you didn't notice. :)
  • Whee! Much better. Danke. I have a question. What determines if a comment is "new" or not? I've noticed that even though I've looked at a thread, the system still tells me they're new.
  • Bitte schoen. I think it's stuff that happens while you're logged out, although I'm not totally sure (especially since I never log out).
  • Verrrry nice. Mucho better than the other philter. I would offer one suggestion however — howsabout a different color than orange? It's vibrates pretty loudly on my screen, if you know what I mean. Maybe just a darker orange? But bravo and thanks for going to all the trouble.
  • "It's vibrates"?
  • Lookin' good, tracicle. And I have to suggest... our tagline should be "on preview". Well, I think so, anyway ;)
  • Bugreport Seems when I try to post, the post actually goes through but the page doesn't refresh, or tell me so... just sits there doing not-so-much (winxp, opera 7.21)
  • This is a really minor thing, but Daylight Savings is over. So technically it should be EST. (I'm not really complaining because I'm just happy I'm not trying to figure out New Zealand time anymore.)
  • That was the problem with your post being archived; our server is set to EDT (although if daylight savings is over then huh?) and mofi was set to NZDT, so one thought the other didn't exist yet. But since it's the hosting company that's set to EDT, I can't do much about it. And coriolisdave, it does that under Safari as well, which is what I'm using. Rather than go back to the main page, it sends a few pings out to various preset places (a metaphilter feature). I'll fix it tonight. Testing tags: bold italic underline strikethrough
  • Hmm, dave, not sure why your bold tags didn't work up there.
  • And, of course, my attempt at bold was obviously futile. Mental note: preview.
  • Hehe.. no worries. Was also about to post a "where are the new comments?" comment, as the 3 new comments weren't showing up. But they just did. Tags still seem to be recalcitrant, however...
  • Suggestion - would it be possible to have a "home" link at de bottom of de page?
  • test test2 On preview: That's interesting doesn't work but < strong > does.
  • test test2 Same with and < em >
  • Maybe that's a browser thing? I used normal html < b >, < i > and so on.
  • lets try it in IE nup but that last worked (strong tags) bizarre
  • testing strong with opera booyah.
  • Bug I logged out, but now I can't log back in again - I click "login" and receive the "click the button below to logout" screen again.
  • Just tried to replicate the bug in Safari, Mozilla, Firebird and IE and couldn't. How did you end up logging back in to post?
  • I clicked the "login" link from "to post a comment you must login" and it gave me the login page. I just tried it again, and clicking "login" from the main page still gives me the "logout" button. It also says that I'm logged in as "anonymous"
  • Okay.. back in with IE6, which seems to let me logout/in at whim. Opera won't let me in at all. Noway, uh-uh, not having a bar of it ;)
  • Funky. I'll let the metaphilter guys know, see if they have a hack for that.
  • Wow! New colors! I like!
  • [These colors are Good]
  • Thanks! The Mofi logo is thanks to taz, btw.
  • I, also, like the colours. Although the black-on-blue in the comment box is slightly hard to read.... (boy I'm a picky prick, aren't I? ;)
  • Oh, I've seen that under IE. I don't know why it does that - in this browser it's a white background. I bet the buttons are some funky colour too, yeah?
  • I think this all looks great! I like the colors too. Thank you thank you tracicle!
  • Except the time stamp is incorrect. I just posted the above at 8:40 EDT...
  • oooo ooooh can we have a membership counter on the home page like MeFi? (And a pony. Thanks)
  • I want a pony too!!
  • Quiet down, if you wait patiently you can all have ponies*. * Actual pony may vary from the picture.
  • The buttons are actually blacktext/blue bg, same as the comment box....
  • *waits patiently* PONY! PONY! PONY! *goes back to waiting patiently*
  • Dave, that might be a stylesheet thing, I'm not sure. I'll try to hunt it down at some point. *adds to the list*
  • Hey, are you handing out ponies? *gets in line*
  • I'll be switching mofi over to replace the php-nuke site tonight, in theory, so the link will return to http://juju.net.nz/mofi/ As far as domain names go, let's give it, say, a month to see how membership and contributions go and then decide whether it's worthwhile. Does that sound reasonable? MonkeyFilter: Democracy in Action
  • Will you put a redirect up on mfx to mofi? (Gots to keep it simple. Some people use bookmarks, and I think we left a few behind when we came over here from mofi
  • It's not as bad as you think: those missing ten were signed up long before we the mefi lurkers joined. They were expecting chocolate cake. But yes, redirect will be in place. :)
  • Site was temporarily down this evening, about 11am UTC during a vain attempt to switch to /mofi/. Redirect from /mofi/ to /mfx/ is set up until the cookies for the old php-nuke site expire.
  • This looks very good! I like the monkey logo
  • We have taz to thank for that, although I don't know if she actually joined mofi in the end...
  • Don't say I never get you guys anything: html tags for bold, italic, strike and blockquote have been added. Those of you who are now stuck on [strong] and [em] are okay too.
  • But we ne-e-e-ed SMALL to let the really tacky comments slip by the web monitors with bad eyesight!
  • Oh, I knew I'd forget something important!
  • It's quite round here tonight. Almost too quite...
  • It's quite round here tonight. Almost too quite... It's all that turkey that some of us have eaten today. Expands the waistline something awful.
  • Important Notice: I hope people look down here. In lieu of a MeTa-type page for bugs, suggestions, and other mofi-related issues, I've temporarily set up my blog as a quasi-MeTa. Complaints, technical-related queries, suggestions and other such things irrelevant to the front page should be posted there as a comment, until I come up with a proper site. http://earthling.net.nz/tracyh/
  • I have no idea if this works or not. If it does, then odds are you're reading it. If it doesn't, then that's no biggie. I'm practicing the simplest of thread necromancy, just to see if it's doable.
  • So, what did you do?
  • Heh. Actually it's in relation to a comment over here about whether or not one could necromance dead threads under the 'philter system. It would appear to be possible.
  • Good times.
  • Hey, Wolof! Reminiscing?
  • What synchronicity. Earlier this morning, I was reading old threads and marveling.
  • WHAT??? Huh?!? It wasn't always lavender?!?! Oh, the fun us poor Decembrians missed out on...
  • I still want to know what poor fate befell post number 1. Something so gruesome it had to be removed entirely from the world, and reposted.
  • Obviously my plan to necromance all the threads failed. No zombie minions yet at any rate. Damn.
  • Braaaiiiinssss, brrrrraaaiiiiinsss. . . .
  • Ich war hier.
  • I just want to tell you both good luck, we're all counting on you.
  • He's just brought down because . . . when you knocked . . He thought you were the candyman.
  • Look how cute we used to be! What the hell happened?!
  • Yeh, and it was still all cute at 800 users, when I came in, and lots of cuteness left, tho, if you're asking me, which you weren't, but.
  • I think the original colours are saved as a stylesheet still, so if you have Mozilla you can find the hideous one with a white background and blue/yellow text. For what it's worth, I'm not happy with the current stylesheet and I want to redo it at some point. I think it's probably just boredom calling. I quite like the one called "Yellow", although I've forgotten who made it now.
  • Hey, yeah, I like the yellow one, too. I posted a question about that in the last Mozilla thread - is there a way to set an alternate stylesheet as the default in Firefox? I change it when I get to MoFi, but it reverts to the default the second I link to any other page on the site.
  • Implementing it with a browser cookie could probably do it.
  • Alternate stylesheets aren't really designed for sites like MoFi, but a couple of themes that could be selected as part of your profile wouldn't be hard to set up. Or, like xerxexrex says, a cookie would work as easily. Expect something between now and, say, next year. :) The sidebar needs fixing first, grr.
  • I say we keep it.
  • Hey, all the stuff I said I'd do, I've done! *congratulates self*
  • And keep quiet, those who would claim otherwise.
  • Whatever ya say, boss lady. Hey, don't look at me, I just post here.
  • Ahhhhh, taglines .... Monkeyfilter: Thanks for going to all the trouble Monkeyfilter: "It's vibrates"? Monkeyfilter: I can't do much about it. Monkeyfilter: Hehe.. no worries. Monkeyfilter: These colors are Good. Monkeyfilter: It's quite around here tonight. Monkeyfilter: It wasn't always lavender?!?! Monkeyfilter: Look how cute we used to be! What the hell happened?! Monkeyfilter: I say we keep it. Mmmmmm, that felt good. Nothing like a few taglines on a Monkey Monday morning.
  • You forgot Monkeyfilter: The sidebar needs fixing
  • Nope - sidebar's working great. I really like that sidebar - mefi doesn't seem to have anything like it, and it's much easier to keep track of old threads (like this one) with it. I like it so much, I think I will call my first born "Sidebar". Then, of course, about twenty years later you can all be amused by the notice of matricide in the papers.
  • Plus, "Monkeybashi" is taken.
  • I hope Monkeybashi got Monkeybashi, or else there will be Monkey Trouble.
  • Monkey Trouble = Monkey Bashing. Eep.
  • In honor of MoFi's second birthday (which we missed by a few days) I will be posting a single comment in each and every MoFi FPP in chronological order.
  • Right, good luck with that.
  • Don't forget the eeked posts.
  • I think I would get bored after about three. But good luck to you - it will bring attention to some interesting old threads. Don't forget all of mine - they are all gems! (and I'm not just saying that because I'm too busy/unimaginative to have made any good posts in the last few months).
  • Wow, this is like going back.....to the future!
  • *cue Huey Lewis*
  • Good luck, we're all counting on you.
  • And don't call him Shirley.
  • Like Zorro.
  • MonkeyFilter is only two? Huh. Happy birthday.
  • Yup, and I realised I need to pop into these places to make my insaity complete. Check the timestamps, and you'll understand. Or will you?
  • I never understand insaity.
  • That's what makes it so insain. *grins as he annoys the spelling police*
  • *crosses eyes, grimaces*
  • *whacks Pete on back of head to make his eyeballs stick that way forever*
  • ...insaity ...a land where one daresays too much. writers often don't like to go here but when they do, their best stuff often comes out life is very contrary some lives
  • A contrarian true Would never argue Unless a word was spoke It's all for the worse To take the converse Of any contrarian bloke
  • "Hi... Welcome to the... uh... Oh, yeah. This is Nickdanger, and welcome to the commentary track for the great Nickdanger Odyssey. Uhmmm... Right. So, I came on board the project... let's see, it must have been a couple of days after the 'Happy Birthday MoFi' idea started getting bandied around. And uh... well, that was the spiderweb post and I don't think anyone had actually even seen it by that point and uh- Oh, that's BearGuy! Man, what an amazing person to work with. He really took to the project you know, got really passionate about it. But he's a passionate guy- Anyway, the start of the project was a little rocky. Nobody was too sure what we were doing, we weren't sure how it was going to be recieved, whether anyone would even notice. You can really tell that up ahead, you'll notice a couple of jump cuts because of some false starts we had. Anyway, who knew? I mean, no one knew the kind of success that this project would have. It's really taken on a life of it's own, it's really become THE standard of it's genre. And I gotta say, we set the bar really high. Like, uh... I mean, I think we're the Gone With The Wind or, what was that other movie, the one about Rosebud? Whatever, the point is that this project is the "Star Wars" of the retro-commenting/time-travel/feel-good/underdog-marathon/action-adventure genre. And I'm proud of that. Damn proud. "
  • Just wait until the next MoFi birthday. That's all I'm sayin'
  • Ha... everyone will go to post #2, but no one will ever think of going to post #3. I'll put all my passwords and important notes here.
  • MonkeyFilter: double plus banana flinging. P.S. Dear pinhead GQ wannabe clueless sellout wackity design-hell nerds: WIRED SUCKS.0!!
