Why do some people live longer than others?
That's it, I'm moving to Japan where I'll study for a Doctorate whilst doing the odd movie role with a view to getting my Oscar. Or maybe I'll stay where I am (grim Northern Ireland). Technically I'll not live as many years - it'll just seem longer.

pHd's live longer because they are wussy bookworms. And remember, kids: correlation does not prove causation. Look for confounding factors in any statistic.
-
Republicans live longer because they have evil flowing through their veins. Kidding! I'm only kidding!

I guess I can agree with Mormot's conclusions to a great degree. Yes, being at the top of the heap probably provides some advantage, but is that genetic? In the wild, don't wiser animals who become alpha animals survive longer? My guess is that they do. And, is their survival bonus dependant on their innate abilities? Or is there some sort of tradition involved? Is the one who was named "leader" the one who would win, based on the title, or on the abilty to trash his opponents? Or, on his genetic "superiority?" A really complicated question, if you go beyond the surface.

well...left-handers are statistically likely to have a shorter life-span, by about 5 year *sniff* goodbye cruel world...

pHd's live longer because they are wussy bookworms. *ignores insult, concentrates on long life*

What about if your ambidextrous? Surely it depends on what your doctorate is in? If you have a humanities doctorate, your lifespan may well be shorter, due to the depressing state of humanities departments. Of course, some of us may extend our lifespan by getting out before we have a doctorate!

the depressing state of humanities departments Got over this a while back. Went pretty low for a bit, though.
-
What about if your ambidextrous? yes, what if...? i want to know i'm going to live longer because i can grab life equally as firmly with both hands...! i know quite a few dirt poor, totally uneducated folks who lived well past 100, so i say this study is bunk-ity-bunk. or my irish italian genes are just incredibly superior. it's nice seeing canada up there at #3 - i would assume our universal healthcare, even with all it's flaws, as well as the excellent beer and the vast amounts of space keeps us from wearing out as fast.
-
Plus your hockey and maple syrup, eh?
-
not for me personally, no. i had to give up hockey during the ballard years, due to related stress issues which otherwise would have shortened my lifespan 8-)
