Is Google getting too powerful? As much as I love Google, I have to admit these folks have some convincing arguments about problems it may present as it becomes ever more powerful.

  • The site is run by Daniel Brandt. Here's some background: Brandt is not a disinterested party; the dispute between Daniel Brandt and Google is personal. He has spent thousands of hours building a Web site that he believes is both useful and important, and Google, in its algorithmic blindness, has given Brandt a lower page rank than he thinks he's entitled to.
  • If you don't like Google, or think that it somehow has "problems" and is getting too "powerful" -- then don't use it. I'll never stop using it (unless something better comes along) -- Google is amazing, simple, fast.

  • My, but you're kind, Dish. Brandt wants to game Google so that his entries appear on the top of Google searches. He is unsuccessful. So he whines and cries that Google is unfair.
  • I got to the point about Google "selling out" and stopped. If there's one company that isn't selling out despite their success, it's Google.

  • well, my site comes up first in a google search for the relevant subject, which was the result of 8 years of uptime, updates, and what finally boosted me to #1 from #3 was paying attention to accessibility and standards. which sounds to me like a better solution that playing sour grapes. but i'm sorta drunk right now so maybe my comments don't count so much. anyway google works, and until someone finds a better algorhythm google will remain #1. you show me a better search engine and i'll start using it.

I'm dissapointed with Google because it used to be that one of my web pages came up first if you searched for my last name. Now it comes up second. To a lawyer.

  • I think there is some cause for concern that Google is rising to the top as the most powerful and influential search engine. We're really just relying on their good graces to play fair. On the other hand, I remember several years ago when AltaVista went into the toilet and people seemed to scatter pretty quickly to competitors.
  • I'd be really worried. In fact I was, until I saw that Google is in a mutual arse-kissing relationship with the Segway roly-walker-thing-that-you-can't-buy-anywhere-despite-the-fact-that-the-warehouse-has-half-a-million-in-stock. Panic over.

  • Google are White Hats. Any company that employs that many pigeons is ok by me. I signed up for their Mars base and got a very nice...um..very polite answer. Personally I think they were blowing me off, but I could just be overly sensitive.
