Think you're a creative visual artist?

Then check out the CGNetworks's Alienware challenge. The aim is to create an alien landscape unlike anything normally seen or visualized so far. The only requirement is that it be a digital medium. Deadline is Jan 20,2004. Already 1300+ entries have been received. Some of the notable ones are featured here. First prize is a $6000 graphics workstation (great for gaming). There are other prizes as well. So, all you undiscovered Picassos, start stroking! (or modelling...) Note: I'm in no way associated with the organizers. I might participate, though

  • Addendum: Although the mission says "3D rendered image", my understanding is that it has to only 'look' 3D, even if it is a painting.
  • That is a cool idea for a contest. I wish I was better at Lightwave. All of the entries they have on display look very nice, but none really challenge our idea of an alien world in the way the contest suggests. At least to my eye. But since looking at them, I am having a very difficult time thinking of something that does really challenge it. Anybody have any ideas on how to radicalize our idea of alien landscape? The one I think suceeds the most is this one by Chris Koutroulos. The best example I can think of is Arthur Clarke's Rama. There is a fantastic chapeter in Rendezvous with Rama, the first of the series, in which the protagonist has to radically readjust his perceptions of the world when he enters Rama (which is a massive cylinder, open on the inside)
  • That one on the first "notables" page looks like something out of Worms. That said, these are brilliant.
  • This one and this one seem quite alien to me. And they are quite cool also! This one is beautiful. (Honest!) shotsy - Nothing can get more alien or weirder than the images linked in this thread.
  • As an update way after the fact, the winning image is here. *His public service done, he continues up the threads*
