Bob Dylan talks about songwriting. Insights from an American icon. Whether or not you enjoy Dylan's music and lyrics his perspective in interesting and he is rarely this talkative, especially about the nature of his art. [via ExpectingRain]
  • Elvis Costello > Bob Dylan.
  • Is that mathematical or directional?
  • Mathematical. Dylan may be poetic. But Costello has Wit.
  • And apparently he's fucking these days too. Welcome to Canada, Elvis.
  • Not to say that Dylan didn't fuck down as well. ;-)
  • Dylan is a spokesman for Victorias Secret now. I'm sure he gets laid plenty...
  • The worst song I have *ever* heard, and believe me I've heard some shit so this is saying something, was while I was in a doctor's waiting room recently and the 'oldies' station on the radio played Dylan's 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight' covered by Burl Ives. Yes, Burl Fucking Ives. It sounded like he did it in 1 take, drunk out of his mind. Truly awful. He didn't even sound in-time. God damn. Uh, there is no way to describe how bad it is. The next song was 'Daniel' by Elton John, and that is the first time I've ever been glad to hear it - so as to wash out that shit from my brain. Aaaargh!
  • Nice find, Jerry. I'm glad Bob didn't give up too much about what the songs mean. I've always liked the mystery (and my own interpretations). I remember an interview once when he was asked to explain his lyrics...his answer was: "My lyrics are very mathematical...I use words like other people use numbers". I thought that was a great response. And Captain: I love Costello too, but this is a Dylan post. Besides, all Costello albums are just imitations of "Blood on The Tracks".
  • "Even if I could tell you what the song was about I wouldn't. It's up to the listener to figure out what it means to him." Exactly. Great post, Jerry.
