Forks Smash! MoFi Meet! NEW YORK MONKEY MEETUP Though I've been somewhat, er, busy; I am still down with the: 1st KING KONG MEMORIAL NY MOFI MEETUP June 4th, Friday; 5:45 (we'll wait till 6:00) on the stairs of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Mefi-ers, friends of Mo- or Me-, general hangers on or bananas of all types are welcome. Bring some monkey paraphenalia (stuffed monkeys, monkey shirts, monkey hats, a banana will do) to identify yourself. RSVP?

  • I'm there. Need to track down Monkey paraphenalia.
  • Wish I could be there! But, I'd suggest that waiting only 15 minutes may eliminate some monkeys from the festivities, especially during rush hour. Maybe you should specify when and where the follow-on will be.
  • Will be there, but not for long, as I've got a volleyball game at 7 on the other side of the park. I will hook up with all of you afterward if there's still something going on.
  • so? update us! did this come off? report on all activities, please!
  • Is SideDish posting from the future?
  • I'm coming! I
  • Agreed on a specific spot, but as I haven't been to the Met in years, couldn't suggest one. and if any Smurfs show up, I'm not giving massages!
  • oh man, i don't really care where we meet. i'll venture the top level (top few steps) of the LEFT stairs, which are on the left-hand side of the main stairs (if you are facing the museum). forks? surlyboi? What says ye? Or we could do bottom center, top center, right side center, left side center, etc, etc, ad nausea...
  • Bottom right side, as you face the museum.ry 1re's usually a hot dog cart somewhere in that general vicinity.
  • Ok, that wasn't what I entered... That should have read, "There's usually a hot dog cart somewhere in the vicinity."
  • Bottom right's fine by me. Is it just gonna be the four of us?
  • The Hat, CertainSome1, DirtDirt, JB, spoke in last thread are yet to comment here. Other NY monkeys are yet to chime in anywhere.
  • I'm planning to come as of this writing.
  • We want photographs.
  • And shoutouts.
  • Yes!
  • Wish I could come. Scratch your head and hoot for me, guys and dolls.
  • I want a photo of Forksclovetofu attempting to get through the puny, human-sized New York Met doors before smashing through them, enraged, throwing splinters of wood everywhere.
  • Forks Smash!!!
  • Wow. this fell off the front page smash. Bump to the sidebar. (tracicle, any chance you can edit the title so it shows up as something eye catching over there?)
  • Assuming nobody objects, I'm gonna repost on Thursday with a catchier title. Wasn't thinking. I feel compelled to point out that I'm really a skinny runtish thing so that you guys aren't disappointed. You'll see I'm not kidding when we meet. Think I found an apartment! Yay!
  • Think I found an apartment! Yay! Nice one. Your last post on the Tofu Hut kind of had me worried.
  • You monkeys be careful - I read somewhere that there are bad people in New York. But maybe that was the state not the city.
  • I hope to be there, though my final term essay is not going very well. Maybe I can get good work done on that interminable trainride.
  • Don't worry, pete_best, Batman will look out for them.
  • You monkeys be careful - I read somewhere that there are bad people in New York. But maybe that was the state not the city. So, you've heard about the troubles in Albany, eh? We've had 2 legislators convicted now (corruption), the Counsel to the speaker convicted (rape), an Assemblyman was accussed of Rape (later retracted, but not before massive investigations into practices re: interns and all sorts of salacious stories coming out), and thats just the stuff thats made headlines... But the Bear Mountain compact shall prevail! WHAT HAPPENS IN COLONIE, STAYS IN COLONIE DAMMIT!
  • Yes, BAAAAAAD people Be careful of the bad people You can recognize them easily: their bananas have BULLETS Stay together Hold hands Look both ways before crossing the street Have fun
  • I couldn't resist so I changed the title of this one. But a followup post would be cool, especially if there are photos to link to and explain to the clueless.
  • Bump back to the sidebar.
  • Monkeyfilter: I'm planning to come as of this writing /Mischievous grin, runs to hid in the bushes (OMG!)
  • i expect pictures!
  • Piccies! Piccies, piccies, piccies! Lots of them!
  • I've already gazed up forky's Brobdingnagian blowhole. I need see no more. Forks Smash!!! ...THAT, however, I gotta see. Neverminnnd.
  • I'm hoping to be there. Real life (aka "The Job") may intervene. Although I AM a little concerned... They don't serve alcohol at the museum, last time I was there. How are we going to get the usual meet-up "whoo-hoo we're drunk together!" pictures? (Plus I might need some social lubricant.)
  • Well, what with me being 1) 20, 2) flying to Chicago the next day, and 3) a full 1.5 hour commute away from the met (including drivetime to the subway), I'll probably duck out before the "We're Drunk Together!" pics. Sadly.
  • Captain is designated photographer.
  • Umm.... I don't have a camera PB. So... no I'm not.
  • I'll have to charge up the camera, but I'm excited. Many stories to tell. Oh, and I'll be bringing my best friend, the loverly kimdog, with me. She'll have some stories too.
  • We have stories? Ah, yes... of a mythical land long ago and far far away- Murfreesboro. Stories of afros and shaman and ipecac, oh my!
  • Metafilter: I might need some social lubricant
  • OH my god... I can feel the poo storm locking on me... my bad :P
  • /gently tosses turdies. a simple mistake...for anyone colourblind.
  • MonkeyFilter: I can feel the poo storm
  • excited.
  • Really hope someone brings a digital camera with them to record the event!!! We want details, details, details!! Have a monkey of a time!
  • Given my current poo storm surroundings, I'm unable to locate my camera battery charger and the sucker's dead... is anybody bringing a camera?
  • I am so jealous, I'm having my own meetup tonight. It's just me, and 1140 shoutouts. Please have a wonderful time.
  • Well, poo. I don't think I'll get out of here anywhere near the time monkeys will be meeting on steps. Is there any kind of plan as to what's happening after the staring-at-art? Any pubs being crawled (or swung on vines) to for straggling monkeys? Damned publishing job. *sits in cubicle cage and morosely flings some feces, but his heart isn't in it*
  • Ive got my digital camera. It's crappy, but servicable.
  • I'm bringing my vid camera, but as I said, I'm there 'til 6:15 or so, then I gotta bail.
  • Certainsome1 - email me (address in profile), and I'll toss you a phone # to call if you like.
  • ya know if someone could increase the dork level over there, a streaming Monkey Web Cam would be just deloverly. But we'll settle for the ooking and hopping around this time i guess . . .
  • Raise a glass of cockpunch to the absent Monkeys. (who are with you in spirit)
  • There are several streaming web cams in New York, just go to one of those street corners and wave to us--wear great big signs with your names on them!!:]
  • the meetup went smashingly. Details and pics to follow.
  • /me suspects attendant monkeys are too hosed to report in ;) here's hoping fun and frolic ensued!
  • I see I'm first with a report (due to my being the old fart who shuffled off to catch the train home, while the others were still mulling where to go for dinner and a good time). It was a great meetup: conversation was had, art was viewed, pictures were taken (including a shoutout-cum-cockpunch that I hope came out well). surlyboi was there but had to run, so there were six of us for the main event: forks (who, alas, refrained from smashing the doors upon entry), kimdog (who was the first one there and was eagle-eyed enough to notice the MoFi ID I had clipped to my pocket as I wandered around looking for simians), naxosaxur, jb, and Captain Psyko (besides myself). I had a great time talking with all of them and hope we can manage to get our act together again (and maybe certainsome1 will actually be able to make it next time). And when you see the photos from the roof, overlooking Central Park at sunset, y'all are going to be extremely jealous. If there was drinking, feeding, and/or poo-flinging later on, I look forward to hearing about it. In the meantime, I'm tottering off to bed.
  • Aargh -- forks snuck in there while I was rambling! *mutters grumpily, resolves to be less long-winded in future*
  • Just got in and I can't find the right firewire cable. Too drunk to look for it right now, so I'll edit and post the video tomorrow. It was cool meeting you guys and putting names to faces .(surprising as well... I thought Naxo was a guy and others thought I wasn't =)) we missed the, Forks Smash! though. Angrydykefilter
  • Attendees: Kimdog, Captain Psycho, Naxosaxur, Languagehat, JB, Surlyboi (with friend) and myself. Pics as follows: L to R: Psycho and Forks on the Met roof - L to R: Naxo and Languagehat on the steps - Most of the monkeys (l to r: language, naxo, psycho, forks, kimdog; jb be behind the camera) on th' Met roof (Unbeknownst to all, as can be seen in this photo, I am a descendant of Toulouse-Latrec) - Surlyboi and JB, looking north and south - L to R, Surly, Captain, JB (behind Psycho) - The official shoutout list/cockpunch du jour What a wonderful group of people to go to a museum with! Knowledgeable, erratic and talkative! And oh so much Jesus to explore! I really hope we can do this again soon and I'm sorry that surly had to bail so early. Once I'm moved into my new homestead I'll be posting a bit more. Oookity ook ya'll.
  • ))))) )))) ))) )) ) schweet! Good On Y'all! as they say down under or so I'm led to believe Oop! Ack!
  • yer killin' me g; yer killin' me.
  • Which galleries in the museum did you visit? Where did you go to dinner? What did you talk about?
  • I made it to the bottom of the shoutout list! W00t!! Or maybe it was my evil clones Zumot, or Zmmmt... hmm, Zooot? Many thanks!
  • Sounds like a smash hit for all!
  • I can also recognize wendell and Wolof just over me. Or maybe I have to much imagination.
  • List Schmist--check out John Wayne Bobbit BEHIND that piece of paper. Ouch.
  • Hey, I made the shoutout list! I'm disappointed only one pete best did, though.
  • I thought Naxo was a guy I did, too. I don't know why. Sorry naxo. (In my defence, I'm sure naxo is a bloke's name...)
  • We hit the Byzantium exhibit, as well as the rooftop garden/bar/giantobscurewoodenthing exhibit. then the Hat and Naxo ditched us, and we remaining intrepid 4 trekked across central park to the west side for some chinese dinner.
  • (a hat/naxo hook-up?) I'm calling Matt Drudge!
  • Strange and wonderful to see you in the flesh (sort of). London, anyone?
  • w0w!!! Looks like such fun! I'm going to be grinning all day 'cause I made the shout-out list. But what happened to the other pete_bests? And all the rest of the 1000 or so Monkeys? POST you simians. We want to get to know ALL of you.
  • Strange and wonderful to see you in the flesh (sort of). London, anyone? I would say a tentative yes. Should be fun.
  • London, anyone? Will Meetup for Plane Fare. Burma Shave.
  • Awesome 'shout-out' picture! Definately nice to see those cute faces! We need details, people, details.
  • But how many tickets will the Pete Best Collective need?
  • We're willing to Meetup by representation. Short straw goes.
  • We had really good Chinese food.
  • Good Chinese on the Upper West Side? Where? Surely not Ollie's... I wanted to add that the conversation was some of the best I've had in years with people I didn't already know. Kim's Tales of the City, jb's fascinating research (as well as her report on a town I loved when I lived in it years ago), the Captain's acerbic remarks about a former college and his enthusiasm for the great borough of Queens, forks' running commentary on the art (if we'd had more time, it would have been fun to let him drag us into the Asian and African galleries as well), and naxo's amazing responsiveness to both the art and the world at large: you're a marvelous bunch o' monkeys. Oh, and speaking of bunches: the Captain showed up with a gleaming yellow bunch of bananas as ID, and I wound up having one of them with my cereal this morning -- thanks, Cap'n!
  • woo-hooo! Shout out! **waves**
  • Y'all are a fine-looking bunch of Monkeys! Damn I wished I lived in New York. It sounds like it was acres of ookin' fun.
  • we ended up going down to restaurant row to eat and managed to down an obscene amount of food for under fifty bucks for four of us.
  • and i'd be SO down with doing this again. Maybe next month or so?
  • Thank you fellow tri-state monkeys for making such a fabulous event out of the NYC meet-up. I had a brilliant time. Sorry I had to bail, but was very enthusiastic over a previously arranged date. I waited on the steps for a good 20 minutes after you all left, and was entertained by a man playing string concertos on his violin. Anyway, all the monkeys provided great conversation within a fabulous setting. I took a stash of photos, but need to wait until Monday to get them developed (brought my lame APS camera). Then I
  • Awww, so many lovely compliments. I just wanted to say that I had a great time meeting you guys, given that I am such a recent addition to the Monkey community. Looking forward to more NYC Monkey encounters!
  • Lower Ugandan Monkey Meetup! err no - wait - where am I?
  • Pete_best, get outta the philodendron. This is NOT the jungle.
  • pete_best is everywhere. Everywhere is pete_best.
  • Update: One-hour-photo at lunch turned into 'all-day-photo' (said their machine was down...and as a new tenant in brooklyn, i don't know any other places). i will pick-up my prints lunchtime tomorrow, and then scan them and get them up for all to see! cheers...
  • Can't believe I didn't see this until today. I'm so jealous, y'all. And yes, the shoutout-cum-cockpunch (hush, now) made me laugh out loud.
  • When you come to NYC we'll show you a good time!
  • Dizzy! Where's your picture. I'd bet that an actor would have a portfolio. I NEED to see you in your professional splendor.
  • Is that what they're calling it these days?
  • Cheers, you magnificent bastards! Thanks for the shoutout.
  • Who wants to additionally host 5 small jpeg pictures that i snapped from the meetup? I personally don't have photo-hosting. Please answer in this thread. k thx bye...
  • You can email them to me, naxosaxur: dngdng at gmail dot com
  • thanks, dng: i'll send them now (3:20 pm nyc time) in two batches from my naxosaxur/yahoo account. cheers!
  • Here they are, everyone.
  • dng: That is so kind of you. Thanks for hosting and accomodating the pictures!
  • Its no trouble. Its a pleasure actually - its great to see them. And that sunset is beautiful.
  • and the ladies aren't bad either. RRRRRowr!
  • No shout-out to the_bone? Boo. *sadly munches consolation banana* where "consolation banana" = "shot of Jack Daniels"
  • Hey, here's one, the_bone.
  • Great pictures, Nax!!
  • I'm in the "though naxo was a guy" camp. But no shoutout for me 8(
  • Path-- Yes of course I've plenty of headshots--they're my "calling cards" to potential employers. But I've the most pathetic computer skills, and although I do have a scanner, I'll have to lug my lazy ass down to the filing room in the basement to find the manual, and it is kinda spooky down there. Plus, my pic would only disappoint--I'm curious what YOU GUYS think I look like. That would be much more fun (?)...
  • Diz - would you like me to tell you another story to think about on the way down? (Assuming you read the tragic mannequin one.) Have you installed the scanner software? At least with my scanner, I click on the desktop icon and it turns on the scanner lamp, when I "start new scan", it gives me a preliminary image where I can outline what part of the field to scan (eliminating the white cover is good, I think), and gives me options to print the image or save it on my computer. It appear to be designed for dolts like me. Check out the "Show me yours" thread for Ignorant Slut's offer to host the pictures. You can email one (or more) to her and she'll make it (them ) available to your nascient fan club. You actually RTFM? Since you actually speak a bit of html, I think you're much more advanced than I am, who goes into meltdown when the #%&&)*! link attempt goes all haywire. You might want to autograph the picture before you scan it. So give us your best shot (John, Lionel or Ethyl, I don't care.)
  • dng: Was that just sheer luck, or was it a set-up shot so you could capture Forks best side?
  • I resemble that remark.
  • forks has a nice back...uh...back. Everybody looks pretty cheery :) I'm developing a very bad crush on surlyboi! HELP!
  • dng rocks down to electric avenue.
  • dng rocks down to electric avenue. Yes, but does he take it higher?
  • oh no!
  • I'm developing a very bad crush on surlyboi! HELP! You say that like it's a bad thing... =)
  • Surlyboi is a hottie...
  • What cute litte ears. And what a cute, twitchy nose. I can't see any whiskers, but I'll bet they're cute, too. Plus, I like the big rat. Hey, BreathofRats, cross post that over to the party wouldja pleeze? (For hysterical porpoises and to jack up the thread count, of course)
  • I was getting jealous of all you monkeys having a meet-up, so I had one of my own.
  • it's okay, that was before the drinkin' . . .
  • Surlyboi is a hottie... Surlyboi is most certainly not a hottie. His nose is too large, he's just noticed how prominant his chin is. Also, he tends to fall for women who don't appreciate him until it's far too late... He does appreciate the compliments though...
  • He also can't spell when he's drunk...
  • Surlyboi, 1001+ Monkeys can't be wrong. You should always believe the Monkeys. :)
  • Naah, your nose ain't too big. Gives your face character, rather than just the typical cute-guy-on-the-street look. 's what got my attention in the first place. Such a nicely balanced face *sigh* I likes your chin! *tickle* Damnit, I need help. Is there an AA for this kinda thing?
  • Alnedra, I think he's playing hard to get.
  • Nah. I'm too old and too tired to play hard to get.
  • Um, cute guy over here? Hello?
  • Likewise...
  • *loves self* *abuses self* *feels shame*
  • Mefi: Craig's List for the Digerati...
  • Good thing this is MoFi, eh? =)
  • A close shave for all involved.
  • (thank you, surly...)
  • Nah. I'm too old and too tired to play hard to get. Does that mean if I chase you, you won't run away? *raids piggy bank for cash to buy running shoes*
  • This is like a lost episode of "Moonlighting". Not.
  • Me.
  • Just about exactly how I pictured you, Diz. :)
  • Gasp! Could it really be?
  • uh,emoticons aside, is that muttered in disappointment ( "fricken' egg salad--AGAIN") or said brightly, like Christmas ("My sled is so SHINY!")?
  • The latter, Diz. It's the small hint of benevolent mania in your eyes that let us recognize you. And, you are one good looking guy.
  • Yay!! I'm so happy now, thank you, Diz.:))))))
  • I always wondered what Jim Loy looked like...
  • You are all veryvery kind.
  • MonkeyFilter: a small hint of benevolent mania. Nice to see ya, Dizzy!
  • Dizzy looks sooo cute! Wanna pinch his cheeks now. *twitch fingers*
  • I'm on dial-up, and pictures load kind of slowly. As the top of Dizzy's picture appeared (and without seeing the rest of his face), I thought "Holy shit... is Dizzy actually Lee Harvey Oswald?"
  • Does that mean if I chase you, you won't run away? Hey, sure. Librarians are hot. =) And I don't mean that in an Eddie Haskell kind of way
  • I think I scared Alnedra... =(
  • I think she's busy plotting.
  • I think I scared Alnedra... =( No no no! I was uh... busy building the Surlyboi Fan Club treehouse. Yeah. *shuffle feet* Ok, I confess. I've been leaving work early to go on shopping sprees of books and tea. And this particular librarian is really hot, right now. Temperature wise. *Copies and pastes surlyboi's comment on wallpaper to preserve for posterity*
  • I'm hot too, temperaturewise. It's 90 with about 1000% humidity. It's like I'm back in HK again playing "air conditioning shuffle".
  • It's about 94 here, in the shade. And yes, 1000% humidity indeed. I hatessss the sun...
  • Wicked Daystar.
  • Fear the Daystar! Fear the Daystar!!!
  • Sad thing is, I walked into an air conditioned gym and then proceeded to get really sweaty on purpose for three hours.
  • Boi: And no doubt paid good money to do it!
  • stop turnin me on
  • 10 bucks. One of the best deals in town =)
  • *envisages surlyboi pumping iron and sweating.* *Goes for a lie-down with cold compress*
  • Not to trash your image, but... Volleyball. Jumping around and hitting stuff.
  • Well, one can't have everything, I suppose. *bungs cold compress back into fridge*
