NEW YORK MOFI MEETUP
Curious George:As threatened sometime earlier, I'd like to do a NYC MoFi meetup down at the Met, maybe to see the Byzantium exhibition and get some food and hang. I need times, dates, suggestions of possible other activities and a list of interested participants. Let's do this, monkey types!
  • Are you in NYC right now? From now to Tuesday is pretty awful for me, but next week might not be bad. I am also free on weekdays (got to love not having a life, only essay writing), but have to commute from Connecticut, so can't stay out that late.
  • I'm up for it. The next week and a half is kinda bad for me, however. Visitors From Another State coming in this weekend.
  • I am Very very Very very much down with this. However, I don't get downstate until Memorial day weekend, and will be out of town June 5-10. Beyond that, I down. So down. Possible activitiesand such... Well I'd suggest the Monkey House over at the Bronx Zoo myself.
  • We could have dinner at Le Singe Vert in Chelsea...
  • Forks, thanks for the shout-out! i would love to meet all the tri-state monkies. Especially at the Met, so i could exercise my atrophied BA in Art History... First of all, I could only make it to the exhibition on a Friday or Saturday, as this is when the museum has extended hours until 9pm. (Normal hours are Tuesday - Thursday until 5pm.) So there is no way I could do a meet-up during normal 9-5pm hours, as this is when i work. Also, sundays aren't viable at all. Ever. Second, I prefer a Friday, so i could meet you all after work. This upcoming Friday, May 21 is already booked. Next Friday (May 28), however, is open. But monkies beware: it is the beginning of Memorial Day weekend, and many of you might not be around. The good thing about going to the Met on May 28th is that most NYC inhabitants will be on their way to the shore or the hamptons, so it won't be crowded. (am i the only winner that doesn't have plans for the memorial day weekend yet?) if next Friday, May 28 does not work, then it must be the proceeding weekend: June 4. heh. and as i am a geek, that is the opening day of the Harry Potter movie. At the Met, we MUST do this...Andy Goldsworthy's sculpture on the roof!!! Paging languagehat? who else is around to join?
  • captain psyko, i vote no to the bronx zoo. too many elementary school class trips have haunted me. especially those poo-flinging monkeys. and that god-damned proud peacock!!
  • Lets organize this a tad for future posters: I'm going to assume that for a first meeting, the Met would be a good idea, I'm also going to assume that a Friday afternoon or weekend afternoon will likely be best (though a carryover into drinks and dinner might not be out of the question; I live on restaurant row and can recommend joints out the wazoo). Perhaps for the start of June? Comments? Clarifications? RSVP?
  • My clear dates: Friday, May 28th Friday, June 4th Saturday, June 5th
  • My idyll would be after June 10. But June 4th MIGHT be doable as well, if I plan well. Am flying to Chi town June 4.
  • So far Friday evening sounds best, either May 28, June 4 or June 11. Could meet at the Met in the early evening, then go somewhere for food and/or drinks (though if we could keep it to the affordable end, that would be nice, as I'm on a grad student's budget). That said, after June 15, I'll be in the UK. Anyone for a London or Cambridge meetup? (I'll be in Camb for most of the time - and in London for a week or two, probably in July.)
  • Oops - should have previewed. So it seems that June 11 is not good for naxos, but is better than June 4 for Psyko.
  • Mid-January works for me. :)
  • forks: you live on restaurant row? I live on the corner of 47th & 9th!
  • June 4 & 5 work for me, methinks
  • I'll be in NYC on June 4th. Otherwise I suppose I'll have to wait for MeFiMoFiSoCalWenCom '05...
  • June 4th is beginning to sound like the most likely (sorry Keith, catch you on the nextgoround?). Of course, _I_ may be busy with a job june 4th for all i know. Should i be handling the details here, or does another NYMofier want to play? oh and cert, I'm like three blocks away from you.
  • Okay, I nominate June 4 then. Out of townersmake everything more fun, and I think I can try to swing it.
  • On some checking, I can do June 4th. I might just have to leave early what with flying the next day.
  • Right. I'm organising a Warrington Monkeyfilter meetup. Basically, I'm going to sit in a room with pictures of my favourite MoFi members, and then drink till I can't see any more.
  • Sounds like a plan to me BBF!
  • jb - seeing as I spend most of my time in London, but pop up to Cambridge on a fairly regular basis, some kind of London/Cambridge/waving-at-each-other-as-our-trains-pass-by meetup would definitely be possible. And dng's just over in Essex, and might even have finished studying by then, so he could possibly be roped in. And we could maybe arrange a video conference with Blaise, perhaps laugh at him until he weeps like a child.
  • flashboy: Can you take a rain check until August/September? Cos I'm going off to Loughborough to study, and I would love to meet up!
  • Cool. Certainly, I at the very least will still be around and meetable in early autumn. Let's face it, I'm not going anywhere... Others, I cannot speak for. (Londoners? Visitors to London? Members of the International Olympic Committee? Anybody?) (Loughborough? Nice. Whatcha studyin'?) Although there is talk over at the BlauHaus of a late June London MeFi meet up... wonder if any of us monkeys could crash...?
  • Alnedra - make it August and you're on - I have to fly out again Sept 2. Where are you coming from? I seem to remember you talking a lot about Singapore, but wasn't sure if you were there now. If so, we could get people from three continents together, as I am an uncouth colonial from Canada. And where is Blaise now, such that he couldn't come? Is Warrington really that far? If it's in the UK, then he has no excuse, as it is such a very small country. (Last year I took the train from Cambridge to Penzance, and it was only 7 hours! I crossed a country in less than a day. My little North American brain was boggled.) That said, we should probably start another thread for a UK meetup - and also plans should be made for another NYC meetup next January if the Monkeybashi is crossing the planet.
  • Ah, the Cambridge-Cornwall train journey... such fond memories of the beginning and end of every term at Uni... bags of heavy books... ahhhh. Shall we remember to start a UkMoFiMeEtUp thread sometime in late June or July, then? Warrington
  • Okay, so: June 4th, Friday; say at 6:00 on the stairs of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art? If this is a go, say aye and I'll repost in a week or so to beckon more monkeys... or if trac will let us permalink somewhere?
  • monkeys are brats! i've been planning a trip to new york for so long, but there's no way i can gather resources to just hop across the border that quickly. i want to see new york! how about enough lead time for the next encounter so i can actually go there and see people i know? /start planning...place to stay, transportation, money for food etc....damned monkeys...
  • dxlifer, et al... we'll make sure to take shout-out pics. forks, i'm in! see you all then...
  • later meetups if this one doesn't turn ugly sound likely. keep the machetes at home, kids.
  • *puts blowgun loaded with monkey-poison away*
  • I am still in Singapore. And I'm going to Loughborough to study Library Science. Yay! *blows streamers* Ooh... I might be able to make it only in the last week of August. Can't afford to go there too early, since I'll have to pay for temporary lodgings if I do. But I'll definitely try to make it! Tentatively shall we say last week of August to 1 Sept?
  • we'll make sure to take shout-out pics quidnunc hereby requests 1 shoutout (please) :) Loughborough ... tentatively shall we say last week of August to 1 Sept? please count me in :)
  • Might be cool to start up a page dedicated to MoFi meetups, so's we can coordinate more things like this and the kickball tournament. Might also be a way just to meet the monkeys in your neighborhood, in your neighborhood, in your nayyyyyborhooooooood, oh...
  • Shit, they know where I live! London's about four hours away by train, and unfortunately I don't think I could justify spending all of my money as an impoverished student on getting down to London and staying the night there. Anyway, I hear they have murderers there. And rapists and single parent families.
  • Yes, I understand the cost - England is small, but very expensive to get around (especially for us students - my summer grant came in at half the amount I asked for). That said, if I ever need to head up to Lancashire/Cheshire (which one are you in?), I would definitely let you know. Mostly for a place to stay :)
  • Oh - and on the subject of the original post - that sounds like a very good idea, forks.
  • count me in for basically any meetup here in new york, at basically any time (obviously there are some times that i won't be able to make it, but my schedule is pretty flexible). meeting folks you know online, particularly in groups, is super fun.
  • ::seethes long distance from Los Angeles::
  • *sends good wishes from absolutely fucking miles away*
  • Damnation. Want to come, can't come. Kisses to all.
  • I'm sorry, I was wrong - it looks like there will be a London Mefi meetup in June. The mefites are also having a NYC meetup in about a week, for those in the city.
  • I expect participants to take lot's of pictures for those of us stuck at home!!! In New York and in London! Especially when everyone has had a few! Have fun everyone!!!!
  • Looks like the Mefi meetup will be a day too early for me to crash it. Some of you other monkeys had better do so though, and invite those blue bastards to join us a week later.
  • If we would like to invite them, perhaps we shouldn't call them "blue bastards"? :) Though surely all realise that we cannot dislike them, as we continue to read the site, even the metatalk section.
  • Just found out I won't be there after all. Rats.
  • June 4 seems to work for me. My digital camera just died, so someone else'll have to take pics.
  • There are more monkeys in NYC than have chimed in here. NYC MONKEYS! CHIME IN!
  • I'll be about 252 miles northeast on that day. But I'll drink a toast to you all anyway.
  • I'm going to try to make it, especially since I can't make the MeFi meetup this Saturday.
  • Yay! The Hat is coming! The Hat is coming! hopefully. *crosses fingers*
  • I'm still waiting to find out if _I'M_ gonna be able to come... still waiting to hear back on a job.
  • BTW Forks - Chuck Brown. Free Show (AFAIK). BAM. June 10. You should go. Because, y'know, Chuck Brown is awesome and I can't.
  • Is that like "Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers" Chuck Brown?
  • Yes Wolof. THAT Chuck Brown. DC GOGO CHUCK BROWN.
  • Can dig.
  • And dng's just over in Essex, and might even have finished studying by then, I've finished studying now. WOO HOO. Hello everyone. I'd be interested in a meet-up, too, although I don't really know where and when I'm going to get a job. And as long as flashboy doesn't come dressed as a vampire.
  • So. This friday? Whats the good word. I'm back in NYC now, at long last.
  • I'm about to repost, as I've had a fellow monkey let me crash and set up my computer even. Lord love a monkey.
