Click through a tour of "quirky" Japan.
Skip the "Quirky Japan Photos" for the great section on odd museums, from those celebrating parasites or laundry (complete with Masters paintings of laundry-related scenes). The vending machine photos also improved my mood. For the more serious reader, "Understanding Japanese Buddhist sculpture" at the bottom of the site.

I've witnessed or participated in at least half the festivals mentioned on that site and I'm still alive. Cool. =)

I witnessed the penis festival in my callow youth and while I'm sure there are plenty of pictures of me there, (I did tend to stand out in rural Japan and some took my presence as a prompt to take pictures.) I don't actually posess any anymore. =( Still in all, once you've seen one giant wooden wang, you've pretty much seen 'em all. =)
