Curious George: Gmail My friend (who got his gmail account via blogger) is using one of his two invites to give me a Gmail account, ever since I heard he got one I've been really jealous, question is: with this lovely fresh start what address should I choose? Since there are very few beta testers many millions of very cool ones are still available! Choices! What is Gmail?

Tentitive ideas: -iheartmonkeysex@gmail.com -georgewisapinkocommie@gmail.com -others too lame to mention Also, it needs to be between 6 and 30 digits long, and the only character allowed beyond numbers and letters is a period.

  • I should probably hurry up and register an account incase the invite thingy times out. Spammer is also taken... tracicle: if I get the chance to invite people, you're top of the list ;)
  • A few caveats: - It (currenlty) doesn't support any MacOS9-based browser. Neither Safari on OSX. Meh. Ended up using... Netscape. - Last two emails I got, there seemed to be some bug that didn't allow download of attachments. Anyway, already got my favorite. Whee!
  • fresh.start@gmail.com prescient@gmail.com (since you knew what boo's suggestion would be before he gave it, sort of.) It'd be easier if we knew you better. Just don't pick something that sounds cool now but'll make you squirm later. You also might want to consider what recipients would do with an email from cheap.viagra@gmail.com, for example, if that appealed to you.

  • Not to derail, but does anyone know why the comments are totally out of order in here? It seems to be worse than the few other places I've noticed it... It's friekin' me out, man!

  • Because the invitation is only to active blogger users, just like the invite a friend link in gmail doesn't appear until you've reached some activity threshold. All the good names are already taken I'm afraid, long ago. Sigh. I had designs upon daniel@gmail.com, or possibly octopus@

  • I also had that problem recently. Thinking up a username. First I used my real name (my nick is too short for Gmail :-( ) but then I got another invite (I know people that know people) and used a nonsical name. Don't know wich one I'm going to use. Gmail does work with Safari though. There are some glitches (editing the address-book opens erroneous windows and you can't check if your username is taken. Also the shortcuts don't work, but i don't mind about that.) but in the whole it works and is the slickest web-interface for email I've seen. The only thing that bothers me is the M$ style of quoting. The cursor is at the top of the quoted message, and since the window is rather small nobody will delete any message portions. But I'm kind of old school in that. I'm probably going to use my Gmail account for fast backups when I don't want to fire up my FTP client and just wants the stuff I did to be backed up. holester at gmail dot com if you want to sent me large attachments

  • There was certainly something very cool about getting my.name@gmail.com - I mean, if you think about how long it's been since you can get anything even resembling a real name at hotmail... I dunno. Quite a minor thing to get pleasure from, but the fact that for once in my life I was first to something - and that I beat that bloody artist, the sodding Texan judge and that twat country and western singer - it just gave me a little techy thrill for, ooh, two days at least?

  • I small question - what is the point of having a minimum length on usernames? I've never really understood that one, especially for email addresses.
