Don't Toss That Cocktail Napkin! The Smithsonian Celebrates the Creative Process; How Doodles And Scribblings Are Transformed Into The Life-Changing Machines And Eternal Goods Of Our Century.
  • very cool. )))))
  • [Working sketch of a banana]
  • one of my favorite napkin sketches was done by two of the giants of my field of study - as they were dkinking around a table, they started scribbling on a napkin, resulting in a quite amusing picture chock-full of science bits and assorted weirdness. unfortunately i can't find a shot of it online...
  • Froggy- I'm intrigued. Who are (were) these guys?
  • Nice, thanks!
  • dizzy - jurgen aschoff and colin pittendrigh, both sadly deceased. they were (from what i've heard) enormously entertaining people. one of the fundamentals of the field is named "aschoff's rule" in honor of jurgen, and an amazing number of current bigwigs worked with pitt. the journal of biological rhythms published the image a few years back; unfortunately that specific journal is a pain to find - our library doesn't carry it, my subscription doesn't go back that far, and the online version isn't easily available. i have it on a t-shirt though, from the spring 2000 meeting...
  • Thanks, Froggy! I'm not surprised that you mentioned that they were both "enormously entertaining"; it seems that those who really "get" their field are also infused by the sheer joy of discovery and practice-- what a gift to be able to do exactly what you love, often for cash and reknown!
