  • Beautiful, yes, but airless and lifeless, too. If you can drain all the juice out of Dustin Hoffman before he's dead, you're not just a mortician, you're a fashion photog. Cecil Beaton and Irving Penn did this first and with SO much more human elan; models weren't meant to be vacuous Barbies or angsty downtowners, but real people with grace and vigor-- abnormally gorgeous people, sure, but you could see the fun they were having in the way they cast their eyes, or the relaxation in their fingers. (Always watch the hands-- they MUST tell the truth, pace the televised McCarthy hearings, for example). Google the names above and see the difference!
