An Adventurer is You! Travel in the Kingdom of Loathing and amass large quantities of Tasty Meat! Kill Dangerous Creatures! Explore Exotic Locales! Learn Fascinating Skills!

Disclaimer: Meat may not be tasty, creatures may not be dangerous, locales may not be exotic, skills may not be fascinating. But hey, my Disco Bandit is on level 3! WHEEEEE!

  • fantastic! ('s! I'm only on level 2.
  • Anyone high enough level to form a guild? I'm not yet, they don't let you till five or six I think. Also, I'll sell my soul for Dr. Hobo's scalpel.
  • I've just started. This is great. And you need level seven to form a guild/clan.
  • I've been playing with inframonkey for a while now -- we're trying as fast as possible to boost him up to lv 7 to start up the clan. We're up to lv5 now. Maybe by Saturday, we'll be there. And despite the warnings, it's pretty hard to compete without creating a mule character.
  • Pez - do you have the map? If so, go to the market and buy a whip, and fight around in the pantry until you get an Asparagus Knife. Equip the whip, and use the map. The Scalpel OWNS.
  • Zounds! An adventurer is me and I _am_ level 7, so I could create a MonkeyFilter guild. Let me know. I am, not surprisingly, BearGuy--a 7th level Disco Bandit. It's all about the Moxie doncha know. -B
  • Ah, Cap'n. I have the whip, but I didn't know where to look for an asparagus-like implement. I was reading the forums and I love the fact that clues can only be posted in haiku form. Maybe we should keep that here. Want to repost your comment as a haiku, Captain? :)
  • To get dooms scalpel... retreive first a whip, and then, In pantry - asparagus.
  • Side note, because I've no clue - is it possible to join multiple guilds?
  • is it possible to join multiple guilds? I don't know, but I'm going to be impulsive and form a clan for all us Monkeys to enjoy. Once you hit level 3, go on over to the clan district and look for the "Lords of Monkey Filtration." Send me a message via the KoL system, I'm BearGuy. (Not as cool as Spartacus, but what can you do?) (-:
  • I've applied to join the guild. And my disco bandit will someday be the most badass bandit in the land. someday.
  • And my disco bandit will someday be the most badass bandit in the land. someday. I guess someday came and went. We're starving and we want our oven back!
  • *keels over from hunger*
  • Monkey infiltration!
  • It's not me! I put it back already! *quickly checks inventory* Yep, not with me. It's not that Gadphly guy again, is it? Let's go kill him! *waves spooky stick*
  • *breaks open sonar-in-a-biscuit*
  • This is so much better than Progress Quest.
  • Thanks, I guess to a MR. GADPHLY for returning the Clan Oven and avoiding the Clan Curse, which I just made up and consists mostly of a lot of phone calls during dinner offering cheap aluminum siding, long distance plans, equity loans, magazine subsciptions for the disabled, satellite dishwashing or replacement windows. If this is happening to you, then maybe you were just a little too late, MR. GADPHLY. Anyway, the Lords of Monkey Filtration need new blood. Maybe even yours. No, we don't know what for, yet. Apply today. (no urine sample required, just a short loyalty test)
  • I ♣ my seal.
  • GODDAMNIT. So, I know I bailed form monkeyclan, and accidentally took an oven, to join a clan with a bunch of friends and coworkers and such. But we just had over 50K meat and other sundry goodies egregiously jacked from us. We'se been ROBBBBBED. Should any of you encounter a fiend name of Popano - do me a favor and kill that bitch. Kill 'er gooood.
  • How'd they jack that much meat/goodies? They'd have had to donate that much to take that much out, correct? I mean, you get 2000 or something free, but unless she was an officer or the equivalent somebody else did you wrong as well.
  • we were a pretty free wheelin clan - most of our members were people we knew/trusted personally, and someone must've accidentally promoted him to a Karma free rank that we have set up for one of our members who takes stuff out of the stash, sells it, and reinvests the meat into the stash.
  • Popano was the Clan Curse. ALL WHO WOULD DEFILE THE MONKEY CLAN OVEN, WITNESS CAPTAIN PSYKO'S GRIM FATE!! /reverb Seriously, I'm sorry about that. And I see the little git doesn't do PvP. What a pity. *dusts Mr. Accessory lovingly*
  • I returned the Oven I remind you! And FWIW, we've bounced back in record time. It's made us leaner meaner, and stronger as a clan...
  • Alas, the Clan Curse is swift (okay, not so swift) and remorseless. A veritable Erinyes of terrible vengeance.
  • not so remorseless either it seems... Like I said. we is back on top!
  • Like I said. we is back on top! For now...
  • I've applied for MonkeyFiltration membership!
  • Hey Goetter, did you see this over on MeFi? It's kind of an interesting read. I had only begun to think of the control of virtual economies when those strangers wanted to buy my Mr. Acessory. Mr A. cost real dollars, and they offered exorbitant meat and items, so it's the same story in reverse, I guess. You're a homeless woman with a McMansion in Cyberspace because your only real world posession is a laptop? I didn't buy that story.
  • Wow, I didn't see that. Thanks, kuujj.
  • CLAN BROADCAST Would the monkey who checked out the clan Cocktailcrafting Kit please return it to the stash when you're done? You've had it out for over a day now. Clan protocol dictates that you return community items such as the E-Z Bake Oven and the Cocktailcrafting Kit after you use them. Beware the Curse! (To tide us through these thirsty times, I've purchased an interim Kit for the Clan. So the one in the stash right now is not the community Kit.)
  • Well, I wasn't planning on joining a guild, but what the hey, why not? Besides, you can never have enough Saucerors. *submits application*
  • Dear lord, this thread is still being added to? Well, groovy. Our ranks are getting more monkeys every day. Woo-hoo!
  • *reads kuujj's link* Well, we've got at least one Monkey who doesn't own his own computer, posting instead from open terminals at libraries. So it could happen. Though in that case, I think the lack of a credit card for monthly billing would be the bigger problem. Didn't surprise me that they rounded up Julian Dibbell - the A Rape In Cyberspace guy - for a quote.
  • I am in the Ninja Turtle clan.
  • How awesome is this?! I was reading another thread, when I saw the name "Wurwilf". I checked it out, because you all know that's a Spooky Forest thing, and sure enough, that's where the name was from. It got me started looking for KoL-ing monkeys, and here I am. Just submitted my app to the clan, perhaps a bit late, but better than never! Wheeeeee!
  • Yes, yes indeed, it's from the Warwelf description. I forgot to check back about a Monkey clan, though! I'm in Guardians of the Corkscrew, a teenytiny clan with an online acquaintance of mine. virago, level-8 Accordion Thief, very much addicted. the end.
  • The more the merrier! We need more war monkeys.
  • Thank goodness. My clan, Hippys, was awful. No interaction at all, bad leaders... you know. Now all 3 of my KoL identities will have good clans (I read each and every post in the forums about multis, and decided that as long as they don't meet, they're okay.) I applied to the monkey clan with my level 8 pastamancer Chiyo, who will be more than happy to do some clan cooking. gizpotato (my original character; level 13 disco bandit), and pollywog (level 4 sauceror) are in Ninjapiraterobotzombies. Odd name, but a great clan. Sigh, I never thought I'd be going on and on about a game, getting excited about changes (spectral pickle factory!!!), and all that. Joke's on me!
  • Agreed, this has been a lot of fun...and a great way to get to know a bunch of the monkeys in new and different ways! The more the merrier! We need more war monkeys. Absolutely! Come for the war, stay for the bananas!
  • Flying Monkeys! Where are the flying Monkeys? *turns on the beacon
  • Hmmm... not seen any flying monkeys yet, BlueHorse. But there are plenty of zobmies, filthy hippies, and l335 hax0rz. You should check it out (if you haven't already).
  • Damn you guys.... I am completely addicted to this game! I just applied to the Mofi Clan. I'm only a Level 5 Accordian Thief, but I be given out buffs. Get your Polka of Plenty On!
  • Oh so it was you who sent me the buffs! Thank ye kindly kimdog, and I've had a good time garnering yeti pelts and meat from the Icy Peak :)
  • Groovy, groovy. Oh, could you monkeys let me know when you apply? (msg me in the game) Especially if your name in the game is different from your MoFi username.
  • kimdog, thanks for the polkas! (I'm gizpotato in the game gizpotato, because my cat's name is Gizmo, and because I call him Gizpotato, for I don't know why). So... who all is in our KoL family now? Are you guys liking it? Are you all in the Lords of Monkey Filtration clan, or do you have your own? I know Wurwilf has a *different* clan. harrumph!! ;o)
  • in order to get some more out of the game before the switchover/reset I am now in the clan (or, rather, have applied to be in the clan). whowantscake, disco bandit, level 4.
  • Thanks guys for the welcome guys... although I dont think I can take credit for all of the Polka generosity. I've only been able to give out a few because I'm still fairly low level. I hope to be able to contribute more in the near future! I had no idea there was so much exciting clan warfare going on! I have to say that I am very glad that there is an adventure limit. Else I would be losing chunks of my waking hours to KoL.
  • I just wanted to add that I'm increasingly amused by the US politics that are coming up - there was at least 1 mall store the other day devoted to Bush and I just today saw one that urges customers to vote Kerry/Edwards this October -- getting the message out where it really counts I see.
  • my level 8 pastamancer Chiyo, who will be more than happy to do some clan cooking. Oh no, now Chiyo's Cooking Song is stuck in my head. Nerdness at critical mass. Danger. Danger. If there's a reset - when there's a reset? - I'll eagerly join the MoFi clan. Or, more likely, give in to temptation and build up another character...
  • I've applied my lowly level 3 pastamancer and messaged bearguy. Hope you've still got room for n00bs!
  • *goes off to treadmill the little bastard*
  • Chiyo's cooking song? *googles furiously* Holy crap! How funny! I'll have to listen to it when I get home. Then I can hum it every time I make some noodly-type dishes :o) You know, Wurwilf, I was just thinking about that today. It's supposed to be, literally, any minute now that Jick announces the 2 week countdown. It was also "any minute now" when I created my first account. mct, nice to have you! What's your KoL name? What class are you? Are you ready for the complete, life-sucking addiction that this game creates? ;o)
  • In Kingdom of Loathing, we have no names. No, my name is Stony Lonesome, and I'm a level 3 Noodle Neophyte. Muscle:9 Mysticality:10 Moxie:9 Meat:19132 I may be little, but I bring the meat. (note: the preceding double-entendre was completely unintentional.) And yes, it has stolen my very soul away.
  • Damn, my character (much like myself) barely has any meat in the bank. Hopefully that will change now that I have my Polka buff. And I really haven't played around much with the selling for profit angle of the game. I guess I'm not a very good thief.
  • Wurwilf, the reset will happen who-knows-when. Jick (the creator of KoL) has had that up for almost two months now mainly so peeps wouldn't be too irritated. We worried that maybe this would dispell our grand schemes, but it seems the rest is a long time off...leastways, long enough for us monkeys to rock the Kingdom! Plus, all of our characters will continue to exist in the reset, they'll just be bumped back to their level one roots. In short, feel free to join up now!
  • kimdog, try selling some drinks, etc., in the flea market. It's a great way to fill up your meat bank without buying a store. However, when you do get the 50,000 meat (for me, it was after I was able to adventure at the Icy Peak at Mount McLargeHuge), I strongly recommend opening up a store. It takes some time, because of market research, but if you list all of that extra stuff you've got laying around, it'll turn you quite a profit. Even after emptying my inventory 3 or 4 times to the clan stash, I still made back my 50,000 in about an hour. Then it tripled, then.... you get the idea. To start it off, what I did was put everything I wanted to sell, including the quantity, in my campground. Then I copied all that and put it in a Word document. Then I went back to the mall and found the going rate for all of it (this is where it gets time-consuming; the first time I stocked my store, I spent about an hour on it). Then I had to empty out my campground, and put it in the store. I dropped my price 5 - 50 meat below what current selling rate was for whatever, and bam! It was all sold. Does anyone have other ideas for a successful store?
  • mct - I can see that you're destined for great things within KoL. I'm not really concerned about the reset. For one thing, we get 2 weeks' warning before it happens. For another thing, I was very stupid and smashed chiyo & gizpotato's hippy stones, and I want them back. Gizpotato gets hit about once a week, and never wins. She even got hit by someone in that last clan she was in! The horror! And, of course, the thing that actually makes me excited for it is the new stuff. New adventurs, new recipes, new skills... I can get addicted all over again! ;o) BearGuy, speaking of my last clan (the Ninjapiratezombierobot clan), what's their standing? I remember from when I was there that they seemed like one of the best, as far as goodies & war equipment went.
  • minda - The Ninjapiratezombierobots are up to 131 members and doing well in that sense, but they have no goodies. I'd have to track them awhile, much like one tracks wildebeasts in Africa, to get a feel for whether they are trying to become a prominent, goodie-laden clan or not.
  • Oh christ. Now _I'M_ hooked. Like I had time for this shit. I'll find you when I'm at level 5...
  • I got my eye on you buster. You can play 20 adventures after you write a new blog entry and go to the gym. What class are you BTW?
  • sauceror. and no gym for me as of late. I've been networking all day.
  • oh cool... there are things that we can do for each other.... too bad i just sold both of my hellion cubes. Networking is a good thing!
  • Trying to turn this reuters blip into something worthwhile. Mail to Blender. Mailing off new CD's. Prepping blog for next week. Also watched the first season of the Office, which rocks my socks. No food tho. So weak.
  • BearGuy and Minda, Ninjapiraterobotzombie is currently #7 on the chart, with 2401 BoGs. Minda, do I understand correctly that you no longer have a character in that clan? [War Monkey, on recon]
  • I do have a character in that clan, goetter. I also have a bit of a affinity for them - it's a great, close knit clan with a lot of neat people in it. However, if they are worth attacking, well, attack away! You can't let one monkey stand in the way of progess. My sauceror will just give some extra potions to the stash in pennance.
  • forks, I may be missing something vital. What are you talking about?
  • oh, nothing minda; just personal bullshit. Nothing to do with KoL. Except that it's yet another time sink in my time sunk life.
  • forks, I sent you a KoL present....
  • I'm having trouble going through my adventures at the moment. So I hope the rest of the clan doesn't mind my absence. I'm still in the game but haven't had the time to throw at it lately.
  • tracicle, it's understandable. Of course we miss you, but we'll wait patiently until you have the time to come back. :o)
  • And speaking of non-sequitors, what's with these politically-themed names for store in the Mall?
  • You know, I keep reading about that over on the forums, but keep forgetting to check it out. Okay, checked it out, and yea, it's weird. Perhaps they're trying to keep the kids interested in politics through their favorite game? Whatever the reason, they're silly. Have you read the store texts? Here's one from a Bush supporter: "Listen up people our nation was left in ruins thanks to the Clinton Administration. And if it wasn;t for Bush we wouldn;t be here today! Listen I could go on forever on how Kerry faked his way out of the army or how he supports both sides of a view!" Riiiiiiight. I'm sure people who go to his store for the (not impressive) stock he's got are really interested in that.
  • hey! I mentioned this a week ago! no one listens to me /snit and I did notice on the forums that Jick is keeping the Kerry/Edwards store at the top of the list for, uh, personal amusement. And the number of stores have certainly proliferated and the text is constantly updated. My favourite Bush one sells meat paste for 11 meat as a "fundraiser" (for uh, who, exactly? Would that count as "soft money"?)
  • Sorry ilya! A fundraiser? Perhaps they're saving up for a Mr. A they plan on sending Bush...
  • Now that the new servers are up, this has just become MUCH less frustrating to play. Thanks to those who've been gifting and buffing me (specially the kimdog). Still learning.
  • Isn't it great?! For once I wasn't reluctant to change my outfit, or go change familiars!
  • oooh a monkey clan! joy!
  • Incidentally, Lords of the Lords of MF, I just applied - my character's name is Virago. The clan I was in was very, very dead. I've been bored lately, so maybe I can put those wasted turns to use.
  • Sorry I haven't been as energetic as a Banana El Grande ought to be. Job turmoil in the kingdom of corporate silliness. Or is that coporate silliness in the Kingdom of Job Turmoil?
  • Okay adventurering monkeys! Jick has added lots of new content, recipes, and drinks. It's officially fun again :o) Another thing that makes it worthwhile to play again is that Jick isn't planning on making any drastic moves to rid the economy of the billions in "bugmeat" that's been generated in the last couple of weeks. Well, I'm pretty sure of that, anyway. Which is a good thing, because I (chiyo) just made my first million! Whooo-hoooo! Now I have no idea what to do with it, other than put most into the clan stash. Or perhaps... does anyone need capital to start up a store? Or want some raffle tickets? Or need trophy $$? Or.... well, you get the idea :o)
  • beandip's user name is cool. Got good mouth feel, kind of funny, nice vibe. So! Did I interrupt you?
  • UPDATE As ascension comes closer, there are more and more changes. For everyone level 6 & up, there is now a new quest to open up Mt. McLarge Huge. Also, there have been a lot of new items added, including new booze & drink types. Ascension is supposed to happen ANY DAY NOW. Here is a forum topic that covers ascension. If you don't want to read 9 straight pages of stuff, just pay attention to posts by Jick, Mr. Skullhead, Scyld, Riff and Aelfrhian.
  • Jeez, and I've just started getting organised and making food, too. Thanks to Darshon (?) for the Hell Ramen tip yesterday!
  • 's okay trac - you don't have to ascend as soon as it becomes available, or even at all. Also, to get more tips on cooking & cocktailcrafting, check out KoL Coldfront. In addition to recipes, it's got lots of spoilers, so don't look too closely if you want to figure quests out for yourself.
  • I'm debating ascension. I'm not sure it's worth it for me right now. I am trying to work the market and I haven't even broken my Stone to battle. What are you guys going to do?
  • I like the idea of starting over, knowing the ins and outs of the game now. But I'm just starting to get somewhere right now. I'll have to read up on what the ascension will do first, methinks. I use Coldfront a lot at the moment, to get the hang of the recipes.
  • I lost a bundle in the markets when the cocktails all changed, and haven't ventured back into that area of the game. The margins seemed too low for anything to be profitable. As for ascension, I'll hang around and earn a few trophies first, then give it a shot when I get bored.
  • I say, Bring on ascension! I'd never played any games like this before KoL, and I've found since that I'm not a market player. All I want is more adventures, new stuff, and new areas.
  • Hmm... Is it worth it to start again? I had beaten the damn game (aside from a couple "under construction" quests) and got bored, and my character has since been deleted (it was Klang). Is it worth it to start again?
  • js, I'd have to say yes. I nearly quit playing myself, but held out for ascension, thankfully. I have a character, pollywog (named after a nickname for my cat, Polly), that you can take over if you'd like. I'd have to unjoin the clan I'm in (Ninjapiratezombierobots), but you can re-apply if you decide to take her over. She's a level 16 sauceror with a good inventory, and 2,355,000 meat. I don't have time for 2 characters anymore, so pollywog's been neglected lately.
  • My original character was deleted too and I started over (my new character is, of course, called Fessik). It's sort of fun starting over and knowing the ins and outs, and a lot of the quests have changed since I first played, there are trophies and all kinds of things now. You can change your focus, too.
  • I'll be sticking around for a while (I'm Tilly in-game), because I haven't yet even tested out the PvP portion of the game. Plus, you know, there are trophies to be added...
  • Okay, I just broke my stone and started pvp. Only ten battles per day? Geez. I think I'll stick with the market.
  • I tried PVP with my last avatar and sucked at it. This time I'm going all out defense-wise before I break the Stone. I have the sppoky scarecrow and the picket fence and all that carry-on, so progress is being made. Soon, yes...
  • Lots of changes over at the Kingdom... ascension is nigh, Jick is making nearly daily changes, and a NEW AREA was added last night! :o)
  • You're not talking about south of the border, are you? I haven't played in over a year. How do you get to the hole in the sky? I can't find the beanstalk!
  • See?! Loads of new stuff. Go to the council & they'll point you in the right direction.
  • Oh, and as to the beanstalk: it's a really obvious, easy solution to getting it back. I overthought it and wasted two days' adventures.
  • Do I need to acquire some beans?
  • I'll never tellyep
  • I did the exact same thing, minda. Very embarrassing.
  • I'm thankful for these posts, otherwise I would've been wasting time too. Question - anyone know what to do with all of these poultrygeists?
  • MsVader, the poultrygeist isn't complete by itself....
  • Ascension is nigh! THREE MORE DAYS. HOLY CRAP. ehem.
  • WTF? I knew ascension would happen if I went on holiday. Damn.
  • WTF? I knew ascension would happen if I went on holiday. Damn. See what Monkeybashi can do to sites she isn't even administrator on!
  • So, are you guys going to do it? I just made three new characters (is that okay--can we let them in or is that against rules???), anyhow, I'm thinking I may let my main one go through and keep the others where they are. How 'bout you?
  • I lost my first character, so I'm playing with a new one now. So I'm basically too new to go through ascension really. Would it be a onetime deal, or can characters go through ascension at a later date (i.e., when they finish all the quests)? I'm guessing it's the former?
  • It's generally acceptable for KoLers to have multiple characters, but not for them to interact. I've got a Pastamancer (fessik, in the clan) and a Seal Tamer (tracicle, not in the clan). The ascension dealie will be ongoing, being the next phase once you've completed the final quest. I'm currently working on the last quest at level 13 so it doesn't actually take that long, relatively speaking. And then you start the whole shebang over again, but with a few added complexities, quests, familiars etc.
  • Okay, I'll keep the other ones for mules. ALSO------ The PICKLE FACTORY is making an appearance RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Thanks, Darshon! I wouldn't have checked, and would have missed the factory AGAIN. pollywog will be ascending as soon as it's available. Being the older & more levelheaded one, gizpotato will be waiting to see how pollywog does. Plus, in a case of perfect timing, I'll be getting internet access back tonight, *and* have Friday off. KoL, here I come!!! ;o)
  • yes, thanks for the heads up, Darshon!
  • Theoretically, Ascension is Jick's trick to keep the game interesting and have people keep coming back for more, so yeah, you can ascend many times. I am only partway through the evil sorceress' lair, so it might be awhile before I ascend. Also, I don't know what that means for the clan (The Lords of Monkey Filtration...which any MoFi KoLer is welcome to join)...so I need to figure that out.
  • As far as I can tell, after ascending you're still in the clan, so I assume that if you lead a clan you're still the leader. But if you go Ronin for the first 1k turns, you can't take anything from the clan. So blowed if I know how that works.
  • Magic Fingers will be ascending asap, he needs some new challenges. He will probably donate a whole heap of meat before he ascends, as he will probably do a hardcore ascension. my other characters may waite a little while more before they ascend.
  • I'm pondering a hardcore myself.
  • As am I.
  • So, what's the difference? Is hardcore better?
  • I always prefer hardcore to softcore. "Hotel porn" in particular vexes me. Wait, what are we talking about?
  • From the KOL site: "A 'hardcore' ascension means you will have no access to any items or meat that don't drop while you're fighting monsters and having adventures. No clan stash, no mall, no flea market, no items sent in messages from other players, no buffs from other players. It's a very challenging way to play, but it's also a unique experience for most players and should be a lot of fun." there are also three paths that you can choose from, whether you are doing hardcore or not. Oxygenarian (no booze, no food) Boozetefarian (booze, no food or non-alcoholic beverages) Teetotaller (no booze) these more difficult versions will give you greater rewards when you ascend. You can combine a hardcore ascension with one of the paths to get greater rewards.
  • Cool! I'm all over that!
  • I'm going teetotal, since I didn't really drink much booze this time around. Couldn't imagine doing it without food, though.
  • Time to Ascend! The Time is Now!
  • Crap! We have to start over in the tower! Damn!
  • Yes, crap indeed. I figure we try different stuff out for whatever monsters come up and help each other out if we can.
  • Agreed. It's kind of a slow and annoying process, isn't it? As far as I can tell, there are 7 levels. Is that a spoiler?
  • I don't think so, because on one of the polls it says 'what level have you got up to?"
  • Well, I am fighting the second one in the chamber. But, it is now 3 am and I am too tired to keep it up. Dammit! I don't have enough adventures to do what I need to do. Have to wait until rollover. Seventh level is the chamber, then there are three (I think) levels within that. It's been fun, and hard. Good luck you guys!!!!!!! If anyone needs help, let me know--I'll check in tomorrow (PST).
  • P.S. The hardest one for me was the shadow monster--really hard to figure out. Hint: don't scroll over if you don't want to know..................................................................................................................................................................................a potion of color. Also, check out the outrageous prices in the mall for items/parts that are now needed--we could have made a mint had we known!!!
  • *damn--sorry that didn't work*
  • Darshon, it's okay. That one's hard enough even with that hint!
  • Another hint, made tiny cuz it's almost a spoiler: With the shadow, it's VERY important to have something equipped, for informational purposes.
  • Oh my God!!! This is killing me. It's already 10 pm and I STILLLL can't get on. I just have to get through tonight. No, no reason. I JUST HAVE TO!
  • there'll be lots of lag too!
  • 11 pm and it looks like it will be a lot longer, too. Geez, I might have to actually get to bed at a decent hour. Dammit. Lag.....wasn't as bad as it could have been, I thought. Can you imagine even trying to do this on dial-up? It's probably not even possible.
  • if I had dial-up I wouldn't even bother.
  • See, this is why website administrators aren't allowed lives.
  • At certain times of day, such as 5:30 a.m. PST, a dial-up is adequate. Even my lousy 28.8 connection was moving quickly this morning. Also, I've had to admit to myself that I need to level up before I can beat the sorceress. I had previously thought that level 20 was high enough, but I was wrong. :o(
  • thought that level 20 was high enough, but I was wrong. Eesh, I'm only level 19.
  • minda, I don't believe it's you character that has to be 20, but a certain FAMILIAR that needs to be 20. I'm only level 18, and this certain familiar is only 8!!
  • Say, does *that* familiar disappear from your terarriam (sp?) before this challenge? Because I KNEW I had one, but it'd disappeared so I planted one anew, which is why I'd not been using it. Off to the arena I go!
  • Okay, perhaps it's not that one. Darshon, you're talking about the familiar required to help you beat the second sorceress encounter, right? (I hope...)
  • I understand that the Sorceress scales depending on your level, but the class of warrior that you are makes it tricky. There's a lot of Seal Clubbers complaining on the forums.
  • Yeah, I saw that. Apparently those guys have the hardest time of it in the game anyway. Did you see the flame-outs (not sure what else to call it)? I feel for those guys... I've decided to give gizpotato a break; with the cocoabo and certain other outfit items I'd nearly beaten her at the second level, and boy is giz tired. Pollywog is up now...
  • I use dial up and for the most part the game is playable. I am stuck in the maze. I thought I had the puzzle figured out so I could get the key, but all I get so far is more puzzles. OH well, try again. Not ascending yet, I still feel a little lost figuring out what to do. But I am having fun.
  • Bratcat, Always get a key But there is no maze keyhole Take another path
  • minda--I ended up having to use a couple of familiars after taking them to the arena. I am now fighting the sorceress, herself. Still trying to figure her out. IT. WILL. BE. TONIGHT.
  • Okay. Maybe not. Now I'm fighting the tentacle thing, only problem is I keep running out of something right before I am able to defeat it. Grr.
  • That's where I was having troubles, Darshon. I think it depends quite a bit on how many times she hits you the first time around, so you have HP & whatnot left over.
  • Beat again, again, again, AGAIN! This is hard. I've switched familiars a bunch of times, and think I may finally have the right one. The bad part is that it's only 8 pounds, and I need it to be at least 15. Looks like ascension will be put off another day...
  • I'm using the killer bee against it, what are you using? What really sucks is having to start over every time if you go to switch familiars. It seemed that the barrrnacle was working really well, but then not so much with the 2nd monster. Grrr, this is REALLY hard! Don't know why I thought I could do it in a night!!!!!!!!
  • I made it to the other side!!! I can go to Canadia!!
  • After a couple of days away, I defeated the Sorceress fairly comfortably this afternoon, as I expected I would. Just about to shuffle through.
  • I'm arena-ing my Grue, Spot. Hopefully he helps more than the cocoabo, potato, barrnacle, ghuol, goat, lime......
  • Okay, I just got beaten AGAIN on the second form with my 14 lb grue. Does anyone have any tips for a level 20 Disco Bandit? I'm fresh out of ideas. I've tried several different outfit choices, lots of accessories, and just about every familiar. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be this hard. Oh, one specific question: do I need to have *that* weapon with me that beats the third form? If I didn't have to have that one equipped, things might be significantly easier for me. Thanks for any help.
  • Aaaahhhhh, done! An ascended adventurer is me!
  • Woo! Congratulations. I'm working on levelling up familiars and myself (I know it's scaled by level, but I'm still only a level 14 and I want to do more...UNLIMITED POWEEEEERR!) and making more meat in the mall before attempting to ascend. Truthfully I'm putting it off because I hate losing.
  • Congrats minda! Hard, yet fun!
  • Thanks tracicile & Darshon! trac, I hear you - fighting the sorceress is a pain in the butt. If you need any hints, I'm sure we can help out. :o)
  • This is awesome!! Gizpotato is now an Accordian Thief with "nimble fingers" under the sign of the packrat. Pollywog is still a sauceror, going hardcore, under the sign of the platypus. I'm discovering new stuff every day, therefore burning through my adventures in about an hour. I started a new character, a turtle tamer named Lei, to play when the other two's adventures run out. A KoL junkie is me!
  • Ha! Me too! Except my adventures run out in about ten minutes. I need the other characters just to satisfy the need. Sad, aren't we.
  • Yup. I'm thinking of starting a new character while my other toils to reach ascension. Jick is brilliant. He's figured out a way to make KoL addictive again.
  • I've resurrected my secondary character, too. Maybe we should start a clan just for all the multis we've created. Heh.
  • We could be the Shadowy Lords of Monkey Filtration!
  • Or how 'bout The Doppelganger Gang, or The Doppelgangers of Monkeyfiltration.
  • Now someone just needs to be level 7. I think my secondary is level 6. But my main is a level 3 sauceror!! I just liked the idea of being able to make my own dry noodles and reagent.
  • having ascended all of my characters, none of them are at 7 yet. With the different content, the strategies are quite different than the old version.
  • My main is a level 4 seal clubber now. Man, it is hard to find food at this level!
  • Cali, there's always the flea market. It's usually way too expensive, but if you keep your eyes open you'll find a good deal here & there.
  • I'm still mucking around the pantry: lots of tomatoes and asparagus, as always. I managed to get another fifteen adventures out of it, but the RNG may have been on my side.
  • minda, I'm hardcore so no flea market for me. I'll just keep drinking this beer I horked from the Knoll...
  • Cali, I don't want to post a spoiler, so I'll ask: what sign are you? Certain signs have certain... resources available to them, even in hardcore.
  • trac, 15 adventures just from tomatoes and asparagus?! That's really good. I need to hang out in the pantry more!
  • I'm sign of the wombat. I have to say it's weird having more moxie than muscle and being a seal clubber, but it seems to help out a lot with defense.
  • I'm posting something somewhat spoilerish, so I've masked it as best as I know how: I think it may be your sign, more than the muscle, that helps out with defense. All the info I could find on the wombat point to that being it's biggest advantage. I haven't heard any reports of it opening up a new area, although you should construct a meat car ASAP if you haven't already done so (the KoL thread I'm using for info wasn't very clear on that point).
  • minda, I did also adventure in the new area north of the town, eh, and scored some food there that gave two adventures at a time. But most of my diet on my first day of Ronin was indeed tomatoes and asparagus.
  • Hey, whenever anyone (Tracicle, perchance?) starts a sister clan, let me know. And if they do, my vote's for "The Doppelganger Gang"
  • Thanks for the advice, minda! I picked up an extra 25 adventures last night. Should I start a sister clan (or tracicle, doesn't matter to me)?
  • Whoever is at a high enough level should go ahead and do it.
  • Okay, it's done! Have your multis apply to join The Doppelganger Gang (mine is Mama Pat).
  • Score! I'm so there! What do you want--Pastamancer (level six), Saucerer (level four-I think), or Bandit (level three)? Let me know. Obviously, I just started these a week or so ago.
  • Whichever you want. My multi is a level 9 pastamancer, FYI.
  • Sweet! I'm so in.
  • My multi, LadyKimiko, is a saucerer btw. It's one of the character classes I hadn't tried (I had some multis that, alas, are no more).
  • Ooh, BearGuy, I love the name! I guess I bring my Disco Bandit, Mojito, to the party.
  • As soon as Lei the Seal Clubber is at level 5 (or whatever level is required to join a clan), she'll apply. Thanks, Cali!
  • Once I get my sauceror high enough to start the Naughty Sorceress quest, I'll start a multi. I think I'd like to try the thief classes now.
  • Lei has applied and anxiously awaits acceptance into the best damn multi-driven clan in the Kingdom! :o)
  • FYI, I have no time for the game right now and rather than loose everything, I dumped the mother-lode of stuff into M.F./D.G. stashes. The vast majority of it in Monkey Filtration, though. If you need anything, it's probably there now. I will check in from time to time.
  • Coincidentally, I was about to revive this thread too. I had to rejoin because I let my account lapse; I can't remember how much stuff I was carrying so I hope the clan didn't lose anything because I slacked off. Is anyone still active? What was the big deal with the server over the last few days?
  • Yes, a few of us are still playing. Jick deleted some database tables by error and the whole game had to be shutdown. They had some problems restoring it all and thus the restore point was not exactly back to when he stuffed things up.
  • Yeah, apparently corneliusv sent me a message or two and they were gone by the time I logged on. I'm sure some stuff has been lost, but it doesn't look like much was.
  • For what unholy reason would someone want to take the automation away from Progress Quest?
  • Aw! I dropped out of Monkey Filtration when I took a break from Mofi, but now that I'm bothering y'all again, I'm in hardcore ascension and (I think) can't join a clan. Can't contribute anything, anyway, I'm pretty sure. So I shall cheerlead from afar. virago is a male Seal Clubber now, so it's an unusual sort of cheerleading, but that's par for the course. Rah rah rah!
  • Happy almost Crimbo everyone! If you haven't logged on in a while, you should do so now. Uncle Crimbo left a surprise at everyone's campgrounds. As for the database catastrophe, gizpotato lost each and every item she'd collected since joining in April of 2004. She only asked for the really important stuff back, though, since she learned in hardcore that the game is much more fun if everything you need is not at your disposal. If you've not played in a while becuase it's just not fun anymore, I highly suggest ascending in hardcore. You can't buy anything from the flea market or mall, can't accept things from other players, etc. It's hard, but much more fun.
  • Boredom has led me to create a new disco bandit. Anyone still playing? Let me rejoin the clan, you cliquey buggers!
  • Hey Monkeybashi, great minds think alike. I was just looking at the game, contemplating some Clan Warefare Activity. Welcome back!
  • Well, that's done it. The Lords of Monkey Filtration have gone and whomped on The Boys of Loathing, netting 41 Bag's O' Goodies. We'll see how long this lasts. Ah innocuous war...so unreal, so much more fun.
  • Woo! Unfortunately my bandit is currently legless, but he'll get right on gettin' stuff.
  • By the way, I've been looking at our roster and, well, the Lords of Monkey Filtration, the MoFi clan in the game, has gotten pretty thin in terms of ranks. Friends, monkeys, simians, we need your bananas. Okay, well, admittedly, it's asking if any of you are interested in reactiving your old characters or joining us in this delightfully insane little time sink. I am rather impressed at how they've managed to keep adding new content and tweaks and such to the game. If you want to join the clan (again, Lords of Monkey Filtration--like Lords of Discipline or Lords of Flatbush, but different), just message me in-game so I know who you are. We've had some pre-pubescent petulant players in the past that we needed to boot (non MoFi folks of course), so we're pretty strict about who gets in.
  • Tempted. What's the learning curve?
  • How much of a "time-sink"?
  • I used to play. Since moves are (sort-of) limited each day, the time-sink factor isn't that bad. It's a fun game that gets more fun as you advance in level, and then plateaus as you near the end. I'll probably start up a character again, though, just to get a Crimbo stocking.
  • Learning curve isn't too steep. There's a nice tutorial to work your way in, and there's an independent wiki which has information on every aspect of the game you can imagine. I started last week and I'm almost at level 7. I'm just questing at the moment, though.
  • Tried it for 20 minutes or so. Not for me. Talk amongst yourselves.
  • The moves-per-day function does allow you to focus your fury. It's very silly and quite low tech, but given some of the punning and poems that grace these pages, it does seem like a good fit. The anthropologist in me likes to see how the trade economy and player interaction develops. The kid in me likes the frosted side-er-the opportunity to mess with the system and see what happens. Say, rocket88, I still see you listed in the clan, but "inactive." Maybe you can get Jick to ressurect you if the password doesn't work? You're listed so it looks like you're a non-delete.
  • Keep you eyes open, Mojito is going to ask for an invite! It looks like the Doppelganger Gang is defunct. Can't get any of my characters to pull up, I can't remember who was running that one, either.
  • Waiting for Mojito... Also, don't forget to log in today and get some extra special Halloween goodies! (Good until 11pm or so Eastern US time).
  • I remember playing this at Halloween last year. Wow.
  • "Since moves are (sort-of) limited each day, the time-sink factor isn't that bad. " --rocket88 Clearly you don't spend time in chat. Or playing the Money Making Game. Or creating a dozen farming multis to build stuff to sell on ebay. Or buying stuff on ebay to sell in the game so you can make back the meat you lost to the MMG. Or ascending as often and as fast as you can because you just can't get enough of that Naughty Sorceress.
  • (I don't do the ebay thing, but I have a friend who made over two grand when she left the game. I hate her.)
  • BearGuy, Milinda just applied to Lords of Monkey Filtration. Wheeee!
  • (just a note to say that MoxiousGas will be applying to the Mofi clan as well)
  • Groove-tubin'
  • By the way, there are now bananas in KoL. So if you've thought about joining, but were concerned about a lack of monkey-friendly items, fear not.
  • Oooohhhh, Kingdom of Loathing! I forgot about it! Milinda has been deleted, I'm sure, but gizpotato donated a while ago so is delete-proof. I will be applying to the mofi clan forthwith!
  • Lordy, I might need to revisit the Lords of Monkey Filtration again for the first time in, er, a while.
  • Well, I revisited again for the first time in... a while, and lookie what I saw: 31 days until NS13! It's going to be a whole new game. Yay!
  • I may have to check back in...
  • Whoa, who was that flash of fur...?
  • Wow, I completetly forgot about this!
  • It's full of stick-figured goodness!
