The categorization of dystopias. And my own favorite dystopian author, George Turner
  • When you read a lot of fiction that has settings outside of your time-frame and geography, it is eery to read a work that deals with a place that you are somewhat familiar with. Reading Sea and Summer was like that.
  • Really like these links! Thanks, fractal_badger -- the George Turner one I'm finding especially useful, while the other is thought-provoking and fun.
  • Great site! However, I am a Utopian dystopia fan. Specifically, 'Islandia' by Austin Tappan Wright. Never made into a movie, thank-God.
  • How about 'dystopias that the author meant to be utopias'. The original Utopia for one, IMO, along with Plato's ghastly Republic.
  • 'dystopias that the author meant to be utopias' BF Skinner's Walden Two would count as one of those, I think, and so would Atlas Shrugged. Here's a disturbing flash that seems to fit in this thread.
  • This is a great site -- I have added a few of these to my reading list.
  • This thread is going erewhon. *weeps*
